  • Platypus code T&C requires "brand new" items. Have we tested with this refurb unit?

    • It worked on all 10% off previous deals

      • +1

It's a reasonable question. But now the deal is live, I added to cart and the discount works. So the answer is yes :-)

        • +1

Yes.. Upvote ur neg comment :)
          Cheers 🍺

      • what are people using this for?

        • I don't need one, but, when my media centre PC dies I will consider one of these. Slightly more expensive than an android TV box, but much more useful.

        • @macrocephalic:
          why?
Would these be able to do 4k, 1080 or hevc?
Plus outputs dts, dolby digital, 7.1 pass through etc.
and comes with a remote control and can install android apps vs windows store apps (less apps and more crap)

          E.g.
          https://www.mi.com/en/mibox/

I think the android tv box can do one or many of those things

Not sure if this is powerful enough.

Can you provide the url link for the new pc??

    • +7

Would the latest dual core Intel CPU be faster than this older quad core i5? And is this PC an ultra small form factor PC? Does this 100 or more include a copy of windows?

        • +6

You aren't going to save $100 worth of power going with a new dual core processor compared to the i5. Not sure how you don't see the value proposition of this deal when you aren't really suggesting any better value by asking people to spend $100 more on a lower performing machine without a valid windows license….

        • +1

@clem0ximus: to each his own - i am merely suggesting that one can spend $100 more to get a brand new pc. now if that $100 more is worth it, it is up to people to decide.

for me, that $100 is definitely worth it as i would rather prefer
          - a brand new pc on a newer platform (to me better value )
          - dual core on new fabrication less power hungry (better value - less fan noise, generate less heat, less electricity, suitable for most people needs (surf the web, word processing)
          - the enjoyment of building your own pc and customisation/upgrade going forward

        • +5

@bestbarginever: so post the build/link. PCpartpicker is a good spot to list a build with available prices.

        • +22

So you're telling me that I can buy a slower, larger desktop with an illigitimate copy of Windows and it costs $100 more, but you're not going to link us to it and all it will do is save a couple of bucks off my power bill?

          I'll take 10.

        • +1

          @bestbarginever:

          Link please?

        • @bestbarginever:
Also I'd like a link to this magical $270 brand new PC with SSD etc.

Even without the unlicenced version of Windows you are promoting.

        • +3

Guys, forget this. I've got the real deal. For $11 more I can get you a 6-qubit quantum computer, your own off-grid power station, and an 8" floppy disk drive. (Hit me up with a sample build if interested, and I promise to ignore all your reasonable requests and make more questionable claims)

          /s

        • @surethang:
No links but certainly doable with:
          CPU: $30
          Motherboard: $75 (h110i with m.2)
SSD: $50 (with all the sales that are happening)
          Ram: $40
          Case+PSU:$99 max

          Total: < $295

Hit me up if anyone interested in finding deals for these components but pretty sure with eBay sales going on not hard to spot them

        • @bestbarginever:

"h110i" "Latest Dual Core Intel CPU"

cant be current gen CPU and two gens ago MB

          $361 with your specs. https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/p9hM3b
          and add $130 for windows.
not sure why you need a M.2 slot because you're not getting a NVMe SSD for $50 any time soon.

        • @antikythera:
Better than 3rd gen platform (not disputing the fact that it is still dual core)

        • +2

          @bestbarginever:

          "better than 3rd gen"

          https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i5-3570S-vs-Intel…

          no. no, its not.

in fact the 3rd gen in the offer is more than twice as powerful than both the 6th and 8th gen celerons.

    • +11

What are the actual specs of this incredibly cheap brand new machine? "Dual core" is pretty much meaningless, and cheap cases and power supplies are hardly worth owning. Feel free to put up a sample build for comparison.

These refurbished units have a few advantages:
      a) a proper quad-core, full fat CPU that's really not much slower than current generation quad-cores.
      b) a solid, all metal, well built case that's properly ventilated, in a compact form factor
      c) a good quality (albeit low-ish power) PSU that runs near-silently
      d) A valid, legal Windows license

Pop in a cheap SATA SSD as a boot drive, and you have a small, quiet, reliable and quick PC for $250. And some models (not this USFF one) will also support a GTX 1050Ti, so you can have a decent spec gaming PC for about $450.

      • Only dual core? My phone has ten cores!

Of course that's all pretty useless without knowing what each core is…

    • I would like to see the sample build.

  • Does the motherboard have a spot for an internal SSD?

    • Motherboard doesn't, but case does :D

    • +2

You may need to sacrifice the Optical drive to fit an additional ssd

      • Agreed, from the internal pics it may only have 2 x SATA ports, and space inside is very limited. The drive cage seems to only have 2 slots and they're both populated in this model.

This seller also has a couple other models around the same price with similar specs in a larger case that has more room for extra drives.

  • +3

The SFF ones that can take a video card are only about $10 more ($178ish after coupon)

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Optiplex-9010-SFF-i5-3470-3…

    • does the video card need to be low profile?

    • the spec on the sff is actually worse than this model

      • i5-3470 vs i5-3570 is negligible. Also, those trying to fit a 3.5 inch internal drive in USFF will say the specs of the SFF are better. :)

the 9010 is a "better" model than than the 7010 too. For the $10 extra the 9010 is a no-brainer, IMHO. But some may have a need for the smaller form factor of the USFF. YMMV.

        • is the usff also use 3.5 inch?
so why can't you fit a new one?

I think most people want to buy the ssd, no matter which one they get.

I was just looking it from a spec POV and it looks worse
but how worst is up to people to decide.

          e.g. you get 320gb vs 250gb

in terms of upgradeabilty, then the 9010 might be easier
          but how much easier?

Do you need a small profile graphics card?

What use case are people buying this for?

    • +2

A couple here at $170.95 after coupon including i5-3570 AND optical drive. Just purchased one myself.

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Optiplex-9010-SFF-i5-3570-3…

      • I've bought from them and they were good with a query when one arose.

      • this is showing as $250 for me. How did you get $170? Thanks

        • probably the 4g version (sold out)

        • Yeah I bought the 4GB version. There were only 3 available when I bought so not enough for a deal but basically the same with slight better specs and a little cheaper.

Note the original link in this sub thread which says "no optical drive", they came back to me yesterday and said "current stock did have optical drives". Wasn't a huge deal to me but I just was asking if there was a blanking plate at least.

    • Got one from here https://www.ebay.com/itm/282826664381 (usual price $159.66) with the previous deal. Not sure if it is valid with this one.
However, the hard disk is only 250GB and Win 10 is trial version.
      But it's an i3570

      • the headline description says "4GB RAM" but the picture shows "8GB RAM" - which one do I believe?

      • I did see that one and $159 before coupon seems cheap. Would have to be the "lowest spec" out of the picture and description I'd expect.

Win 10 trial would have been an issue for me. They would have come with Win 7 COA on them. That said I successfully legally upgraded a HP Z800 workstation OEM COA to Win 10 only very recently well after the upgrade expired.

  • I'm getting mixed information about these 7010's in usff not having a spare pcie slot. Can someone please confirm a spare slot and speed please. Need a pcie 2.0 x8 minimum for a 10gbe card. Also are these sata 3 ports and how many? Cheers.

    • Colour me intrigued! What use case do you have for a slowish uSFF, with very limited storage capacity, ram and add-on cards, with a 10gbe?
      This link:
      https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/optiplex-7010_owners-manual_…

appears to show 2 sata ports. That would require removing the sata cable for the dvd drive to put in another drive.

I am thinking about one of these for my kids. Takes up little desk space, is quiet, and would be good for web surfing etc.

The biggest issue for the uSFF is the addition of a wireless card as their room is not wired with lan ports.

      • My tight arse dad wants a cheap ass PC to download stuff on and to transfer via 10gbe fibre to his soon to be built unraid Nas. Go figure, he wants enterprise speeds for no cost at all. Honest truth.
I did see a tower based 990 optiplex at a similar price which would have the required pcie 2.0 x8 for the 10gbe. Gonna go for that instead.

        • 990s are 1 gen older. There are plenty of SFF 9010 and 7010s around.

        • @Shonky:
          I do need something with a Pcie 2.0+ x 8 minimum and sata 2 x 3 port

    • They do not have a normal PCIe slot in USFF form factor. They only have a mini PCIe which can only be x1 from memory.

The SFF has 2 low profile slots (PCIe x16 one wired as x16 one as x4).

  • Looking for a pc to act as a game server. Not sure if this would fit the bill or not

  • Is this good for playing games like fortnite? I need one so my brother does not use the PS4 as much. If it is not how much would it cost to build a new one/upgrade this one

    • I would like to know too.
Want to buy this cheap one for my kid to play fortnite occasionally over the holiday instead of on my small screen phone.
But it looks like it doesn't have HDMI port to connect to the TV

    • +2

Get one of the SFF units which are slightly bigger and then you can buy a low profile video card. The SFF units also come with 8GB ram which should be ok for fortnite

  • I use something similar to record TV.

Nice compact energy-efficient box that's quiet and out of the way.
    I've got mine on 24/7.

  • Can this be used for streaming or recording 4K?

  • After watching videos on these and reading articles for hours I was close to buying one when I discovered the Lenovo M92p (tiny) which I went with using this same code for a simlar price including a SSD and Windows 10 Pro.

    • +2

Wow, that is tiny, but still has reasonable punch with a TDP @ 35W.

      • +1

Yep that's the exact one I bought from the same seller.

They have I7 ones as well but they are rarer and only increase the performance about 10% from memory, a lot of people upgrade the processor to this Xeon CPU:
        https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E3-1275L…

As you can see it nearly doubles in the benchmark tests.

Although it costs about as much as the computer itself though and overkill for my intended use as a HTPC.

        • Thanks for that. I'll consider something like that once this Dell 990 i'm using for TV fails. BTW the EA4 is still going strong.
