    Google maps is free though.

    • any gd in alerting abt speed Cams and cops like Waze does?

      • +1

Well, Google owns Waze and some features are coming across.

        Waze is free though.

        • any point in getting gps if Waze is good enough?

        • @pinkybrain:

Nope. A phone mount and charging cable is much cheaper.

          Really?
Last time I tried using it without a data connection, it never loaded.
Even though I had GPS on my phone set to satellite only, and had my entire city cached in google maps.
Also, WAZE had a terrible time when I turned on ad-server blocking on my privately run VPN.

There is "free", as in zero dollars, and there is free, as in no strings attached.

A standalone GPS is for people who want free = no strings.

Apps are for people who are happy to have things like data plans, user tracking and advertising = no dollars lost.

No judgement either way; just different strokes = different folks.

        • @iforgotmysocks:

I like waze, but waze needs to have internet access to get the cameras and the other features e.g more accurate GPS

when I turn mobile data off, I couldn't get any camera alerts.

is this true for your case?

my phone battery also drained pretty fast when I use it

  • We have the 620 and the traffic indicators and maps are quite good and they don't use up much data when we are driving as we only update the traffic situation and not the maps. Personally I prefer a separate unit because when we are travelling my phone is the sound system and/or camera as well as a phone. Personal choices but freebie offline programs we have used in the past have not been as good as this.

    • Hi Try2bhelpful,

When your phone is connnected to tomtom via bluetooth for internet data , can you still be able to use the bluetooth system of the car including phone call .

Or phone call must be answered by tomtom as well ?

from the site. Pretty sure it all happens at once but we don't get a lot of calls in the car so can't absolutely confirm.

These new ones use WIFI to update the software so you don't need to take them down and connect them to a PC to get updates; you can feed them into the device still in the car in the garage (if within range). The other thing we like is we can use the app to send an address to the device and it will tell you it has received the new address when you get in. This is much easier than putting it in manually, particularly as TOM TOM used to do this backwards, starting with the town/suburb.

        • so to get the traffic data, the tomtom needs to connect to the phone and use our mobile data?

is there any difference between the 520 and the 620?

        • @try2bhelpful:

so to get the traffic data, the tomtom needs to connect to the phone and use our mobile data?

do you see more info on the 620
or are the icons and map just enlarged?

        • +1

@pinkybrain: We connect the phone app to the device via bluetooth and you get the traffic updates that way; then you use the data plan for the phone.

You might want to have a wander into a JB hifi and do the comparison there; that is what we did :) I think the 5" is too small but we are getting a tad older now.

The "lifetime" map upgrade will last until the maps get too big for the onboard memory. In our last device that was about 5 years and then they offered us a pretty cost effective upgrade path to the Go620. (Can't remember the price but the Good Guy prices are quite cheap for these GPS units.)

  • I see both sides of the 'discussion' can I ask though if you don't have a good data plan (or maybe more appropriately) good coverage the standalone GPS does not require a SIM so it removes this problem from the equation?

try2behelpful I assume you tether up to your phone to augment the traffic details (which are realtime) as an added value to your driving experience?

    • Yup, we tether to get the traffic update via the phone - it trickles through the data and doesn't make a big dent on our data plan. It actually has a pretty good algorithm for avoiding traffic and we have a visual on the sea of red/orange around us when we are travelling. We have had a couple of "she's doing what?" occassions but they seem to be pretty good alternatives and we are seeing bits of Melbourne we don't normally :)

      • hahaha very good …so I have this clear in my mind then you don't 'need' the SIM card …you can just update the maps ad hoc via Wifi at home or when new updates come out?

        • Yup, the updates to the GPS are via the WIFI, you only need the SIM card for the traffic updates on the go.

        • The higher end GO models 5200 and 6200 have internal sim card and don't rely on your mobile to use traffic, but due to it only being 2g and 2g being discontinued in AU they no longer sell in AU.

More interested in a GPS/NAV/Dash Cam combo any suggestions?

      • Dude you didn't even use LMGTFY .

        • too lazy to use

that would require me to take more steps than copying and pasting what you asked for in the search box

          you could've done this yourself

        • @pinkybrain: I had. I wasn't asking if they exist I was asking if anyone had a suggestion of a model. Raw search results are pretty muddled and sites like DashCam talk make it had to find or compare models based it being a navi and cam unit.

    • Yeah, I think that is a good idea but I worry about someone using my dashcam footage against me if we cause the accident :) "Well you have the camera so show the footage to the cops".

      • Insurance companies have many ways to determine who causes the accidents
and not just relying on the dashcam footage

They did fine in ruling in the past who is at fault before dash cams are a common thing.

And conversely, having the footage can help your case, if you were not at fault.
