          23/7 mate.

        • @ilikeit: Gotchya. Thanks! :)

Wow pretty good marketing from maccas - I've never really tried their coffees as they're the same price as other joints and you kinda expect the coffee to be a bit lower quality like the burgers and I'm hoping to be proven wrong.

    • Their coffee is actually pretty decent, same with HJ's.

      • +111

Nobody with taste buds would ever describe Hungry Jacks coffee as “decent”

        • True this, it's the only freebie I never claim (and loathe getting) on the shake and win app.

        • +1

          @pennypincher98:

I only ever get the breakfast deal now, I thought that was the only morning promotion.

        • @pennypincher98:

I usually swap for the hot chocolate if I get the coffee as a freebie. It’s not much better but gets close to being borderline drinkable.

        • +1

@John Stone: You can do that? Wow when I spin up the free coke I can't even change that to a sprite or something lol..

        • -1

@pennypincher98: Really? It might be how you ask, I've never had a staff member refuse to change it, hell I've even gotten frozen cokes instead.

        • +1

          @Jolakot: I ask

"Hi, I got a free large Coke in the app - is it possible I can change it to a Sprite?"
"No, the app says "Coke". Here's your order number."

          Wow.

        • Have you had it lately ?
I tried it other day, and it was decent . Better than it was about 2 years ago, when we stopped going there as they stopped honouring complimentary refills on their coffees. They were half-decent back then, but worked well for me and friends to catch up, over a snack and coffee and refill or 2.

        • Let me guess … Maccas and HJs use the same Nescafe pods and machines as five star restaurants do so they're all the same.

        • @Diji1: No.

      • +9

McDonalds coffee definitely isn't decent. Unless your only point of comparison is International Roast instant coffee or something, otherwise anything bought from a proper cafe / coffee shop will blow that crap out of the water. Worth spending a little extra for a quality coffee IMO.

        • +1

The label of coffee shop doesn't mean jack. Reviews are vital. I'd hazard that most people don't know good coffee because they've never done coffee training

        • +6

          @tomkun01:

I know good coffee because I know what my tastebuds like.
I'd hazard a guess people think they know good coffee because that's what they've been told it is.

        • +1

I agree. I found them to be expensive and usually I am left disappointed. Sometimes it is scorching hot too and needs about 15 min to cool down.

I did have 1 (one) good coffee from them, but subsequent tries have been horrible. Very inconsistent and largely comes down to the barista.

Even Starbucks is better. It's a close tie between Coffee Club and McCafe for me.

Quite literally any small café will do a significantly better job in my experience. Though McCafe is convenient on road trips and nearly always open, so they do have that.

        • +1

          @cyssero:

Very inconsistent and largely comes down to the barista.

That is my experience… I realised that they made it great 1 time, then crap another etc. Then began to observe, investigate and hypothesize.
I realised that the managers usually make the best coffees, so I wait until they are at the cafe part, then order.
I worked out, they less experienced/skilled staff there, tend to not put sufficient caramel syrup in caramel-latte, for the large size (I think some just put exactly same amount as per small, thus diluting the caramel too much) . I now mention to them "can you please put plenty of caramel in for a large" .
I don't blame the staff at all, they often have inadequate training and supervision. If it wasn't for maccaz free coffee deals during monopoly promo (I got about 40 then), I would not have given them the chance, since they charge the same as a proper cafe, and proper cafe almost always do their coffee very well.
          Anyway, I have learnt
-get to recognize who makes the coffees well, and order when they are at the cafe, if possible
-If they are new, or you are not sure if they know what they are doing, try to nicely suggest exactly how you like your coffee/tea/drink .
-A little feedback goes a long way. Mcdonalds are much better with customer service and quality control efforts these days. They don't always get it right, but they sure do make an effort to get everything right. So let them know (as nicely as you can) that it wasn't right, and usually they really try to make it better and get it right in the future.

        • +4

I have sampled coffee from coffee shops all over melbourne and to say that a "coffee shop will blow that crap out of the water" sounds like the kind of statement where you've tried McCafe coffee once and never again… I would say almost 50% of the coffee shops I've had coffee at are terrible and many consistently so, as I usually don't judge on one visit alone. I would say that I get a decent coffee from McCafes at least 60% of the time as it certainly does depend on who is making it.

      • +6

No McCafe I’ve ever been to has made a good coffee. It always taste burnt, watery or sour. I’ve always gotten a large with an extra shot so maybe they don’t know what they’re doing. It never tastes the same

        • Try ordering a standard size, they don’t extract so much out of the same but if coffee grind

    • +11

Maccas coffee are hit and miss. All depends on the barista working at the time. Sometimes its on par with some gourmet independent place, but if there's some 14 year old trainee making the coffees then you get some bitter crap.

    • +1

Yes, good marketing and a big budget. Then Maccas have the ability to say they are Australia's most 'popular' coffee.

But importantly, is Australia's most popular coffee defined by the highest selling or the most popular tasting.

    • They’re gross, wouldn’t bother going there even for a free one.

    • hubby loves! the coffee at maccas

  • Cool, I won't argue with that.

  • +5

Nice first post OP, welcome to OzB.

The standard coffee is disgusting, other coffees are not bad

    • Such as?

You mean the one full of sugar?
Yeah I’ll just ignore your opinion lol

        • Jitterbug!

  • +8

The quality of their coffee seem to differ at each location. Sometimes it’s sort of decent but still not worth what they charge.
The Maccas near my home makes completely atrocious coffee. It tasted so burnt I asked for it to be made again but it tasted exactly the same so I chucked it in the bin.

  • +1

Put in title or description OP first 500,000.

Also seems to be running until they run out so not just necessarily for one day but starting on that day 23/7 until the 500,000 run out.

Sorry for the nit picking but these questions are always in my mind and I just love completeness when possible.. understand if you are tired OP or in a rush or whatever.. Thanks a lot for posting this. Legend.

    • More than 1.7 million customers visit McDonald's restaurants in Australia every day. The coffee won't last long.

      • Haha that is true.. but was just wondering what might happen if they don't finish the quota by days end. Is it a one day only deal or is there still a chance if somebody doesn't order their coffee that day haha lol.

That is crazy no way that statistic is true.. so more than 1 in 15 people visit a McDonald's restaurant every day?

      • +3

How many of them have the app?

      • How many use the app?

      • +2

So 7% of Australians set foot into a McD everyday? Even including remote Australia?

        I don't believe that.

        • So McDonalrs lied in their Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report?

      • What % uses the app? Mostly seen people ordering at the counter

        • You do realise that the people who use the app don't usually line up at the counter right?

      • The free Big Macs lasted the whole day and night and it was 300k not 500k. I reckon it will last.

    • +5

OP did post it in the title, someone else edited it out and now someone else back in.

Also the free Big Mac was meant to be 300,000 and it didn't actually runout on the day.

How the heck do you get this app to work? For weeks it's said that they're experiencing issues and it "may not work." No, I haven't even been able to order through the app… Does anyone else have this problem?

    • No

    • Do you have a good phone?

      • I have an iphone 5s. I don't think it would be the problem.

    • +1

      Did you update the app?

Edit: I just read that you have the iPhone 5s, Apple no longer supports it for iOS, (from my experience on android) Macca's pretty much prevents you from using the app until you update the app… which is on iOS 11.

edit 2: I just remembered that iPhone 5s runs iOS 11 still supported by Apple and probably getting iOS 12. Is your phone up to date?

    • Gave up on the app ages ago as well. It was more a process issue that the app itself, would order and wait for the number to come up, wouldn't appear, would ask staff and they had no idea of what I had ordered.

The app meant that it took longer to get my order then just using the screen or a cashier, app deleted.

  • Is it a coffee only or will it include other McCafe drinks such as Chai Latte or Hot Chocolates like most of the other promos they do for a "free coffee"?

  • +2

20 days??? I want free coffee now!

  • maccas app has never worked on my phone

    • Have you got a Windows Mobile?

      • Just android, Huewei

  • +1

Someone tell OP that McDs don’t like screenshots!!!!

    • It's a photo of a printout ;)

  • +1

I get McCafe coffee a few times a week on the way to work, as it is the better of the 2 options available. Sure, it is not as nice as some of the trendier spots in Melbourne (i.e. trendy brunch spot), but it is definitely not as bad as most people expect.

What I do like is the virtual "loyalty card" when you order through the app. As most maccas joints give you a physical card for their maccas/maccas in their area - the App lets you collect your buy 5 get 1 free credits from any order. When you order a breakfast meal, it automatically adds a "stamp" to your loyalty card on your account.

    Give it a try guys!

    • It used to be buy 4 get 1 earlier

    • +1

slightly unrelated, but have you considered getting an espresso machine and a grinder? really easy to do yourself. and can be quick too

      • Hahahah yeah I have.. figured it is too much effort / don't drink coffee enough for the investment :)

        • It's really easy. But definitely not cheap at the start. $700 or so for both machines. Coffee beans are $20 a bag half price at woolies, which might last a few months for one person

    • They also have a m shape punch-out paper loyalty card.

  • Macca's have recently started advertising they are using a new 'blend' of coffee. Got one last week and must admit it tasted good, but as others have said, their coffee is so hit and miss depending on where you get it and who makes it that it also could have just been a well made coffee!

  • the nerve of them to even think they can compare their coffee to Slurpee Day or Free Burrito Day lol

  • +1

Not sure why they are saying is a world first. When I lived in Canada they did free coffee days quite often, no app or anything. Just rock up and get your free coffee and leave. They did it for the whole day unlimited. I remember them having it at least 3 times while I lived there.

    • +1

In Australia drip coffee doesn't equate to real coffee, we're a nation of coffee snobs it seems.

      • Maccas drip coffee here is the devil. I've had nice drip coffee in japan. Less bitter than espresso

  • 19 days long waiting.

  • Thank you. Free coffee and i know a maccas that does the coffee alright which helps

  • How many votes will this get by the time this goes live.
Nice to see Maccas cycling through different freebies though.

  • I’m glad I have 3 maccas accounts.

    • Lately I have more maccas than I have before.

  • Their app averages 1.8 rating with 3.5k people on Google Playstore, and the complaints are really all about the app, not the food. Not even the app they can get it right. McDonald's is a last century behemoth that just won't die.

    • Yeah it’s only one of the largest restaurant companies in the world worth around 130 billion dollars. Wish it would hurry up and die.

      • Even behemoths die. And they don't shrink before doing so.

    • +1

They've stayed quite relevant and seem to embrace every new technology they can to maintain this. Uber Eats partnerships, Make Your Own, the fact they had an app long before most other franchises and free WiFi since forever. I don't use the app and I'm not defending it, but I don't think they're as antiquated as you think. The Australian standard for McD's is far better than other parts in the world too.

      • -2

        Apart from Price and Quality.

USA shits over Australia on both of these, even Japan, Germany, Singapore.

What we get in Australia from Maccas would not stand the test of time in other countries.

Regular $1 Fish Fridays, burgers that look like photos, payment options

You must be dreaming to think Maccas Australia is better.

Get a Passport and see the world.

        • I saw a 'chef' at a USA McD's smack a cockroach on the front counter with a pack of frozen patries. If you mean the USA quite literally shits on McD's here you might be right.

          https://www.thestreet.com/slideshow/14024062/1/mcdonald-s-ha…

But if you're the type to be impressed by $1 fish then by all means, enjoy touring the world and eating McD's.

        • @cyssero:

I've seen mice running around in Maccas AU, birds at both Maccas/KFC daily Elizabeth street VIC

          Never Overseas, so your point?

Go to Elizabeth street VIC pick either KFC/Maccas and see the wild life.

Maybe the USA place got rid of the birds that eat the roaches.

    • Just checked, got the email but no offer in the app :/

    • will this offer continue on available till tues, weds… or so until all 500,000 coffee exhausted?

  • This also lines up with the free coffee for home game AFL wins.

  • I just got a notification from the app. It was not showing after I opened it, hopefully it will be in the app tomorrow.

Will this post go back to the front page tomorrow?

  • This deal goes live in about 10 mins. Is mccafe 24 hrs? 😬

Generally if it's a 24 hour store there should be someone who can do coffees on (i.e. the manager from my experience)

  • Got my medium Mocha! It's nice! I like it… Thanks OP! 😊😊😊

Hmm, since hot chocolate is not included, I wonder if I can get a mocha minus the coffee…

  • How did u get it mate i still cant see it on my app ?
