Even though I've seen this portable SSD advertised for cheaper before, this is still a good deal, considering Officeworks and Amazon AU sell it for $259, Jb HI-FI for $269

  • Does this price include the Harvey Norman internet tax?

    • I'd say not. So probably around $213.65 all up

    • Harvey Norman internet tax?

      • Internet shopping tax. 10% GST for goods under AU$1,000.

      • Gerry Harvey spit managed to persuade Malcolm and his goon squad to remove the GST exemption on items purchased from overseas worth AU$1000 or less.

So now you're paying 10% on the cost of the item itself that you didn't have to before, and you're also paying GST on postage of that item. If the seller doesn't collect the tax for the government, you'll have to pay it to customs in order to allow your item through.

This is the reason why Amazon has banned Australians from purchasing on their non .au sites, in order to avoid the hassles with redtape the exemption was designed to avoid in the first place.

At least eBay collects the GST at the point of sale so you're only paying once to get your stuff.

        • What happens if you use a freight forwarder? Will you still have to pay the Gerry tax? Or would the forwarders declare the item as gift?

        • @lostn: Major forwarders are collecting the GST.

        • @lostn: My forwarder already sent me an e-mail saying 10% GST from now on. They assume I will only use them to forward brand new items purchased from US sellers.

Your only hope is having relatives or friends from the states to post them for you.

        • @netsurfer: So if my friend sends me a new phone and declare as gift then i dont have to pay 10% gst??

        • @kisshell9: Items purchased from businesses turning over less than AUD$75,000 are still exempted (but each item must be less than AUD$1000 - so cannot send an iPhone X for example).

So if your mate don't send over AUD$75,000 a year, GST won't apply. But, if you want to put your hand up and pay for the GST, I'm pretty sure ATO will be happy to collect GST from you.

Obviously, repack the items. Don't send them with the original Amazon/B&H boxes. Most of us won't use friends and relatives and just pay the GST.

        • oh damn.. but.. I've been buying a lot from them lately and haven't had to pay any tax from orders under $1,000. And customs have not requested any payments either. Do you have any idea why?

        • +1

@el santo: Well, B&H is either playing dumb or just dodgy. Government haven't figured out how to collect GST from smaller sellers yet.

Anyway, as long as you are happy with the price, it's fine. B&H not charging 10% GST is just icing on the cake.

Cheapest ever was the Amazon deal due to cheaper postage.

        • @netsurfer:

They assume I will only use them to forward brand new items purchased from US sellers.

How do they know the value of the items?

Another question: Can you claim TRS on imports now, since you are paying GST on everything?

        • @lostn: You need to declare each item (you need to let them know what the item is as well - if it contains liquid, then certain couriers won't ship them). Declaration is required for any international parcel postage.

TRS, strictly speaking, if you claimed GST rebate when travelling overseas, you are not meant to bring those items back. A story I heard was a colleague's friend claimed TRS on a wedding ring. When he returned, custom checked the ring he was wearing and deemed it was the same one (they took photos apparently). He had to pay back the GST.

If you are really going overseas, then have those items sent overseas - no GST. A mate does that whenever he is in the states - sent to his hotel (do let the hotel know that you are expecting packages). Though, after July 1, I dunno what customs will do when you return to AUS with goods bought duty free overseas.

  • The cheapest Buy it now on ebay around $249 with free shipping and plus 10% off use ebay code, it will be around $220 mark

    • In future, please mention the store/retailer in the title.

That's been fixed. Moderators and power users spend time fixing titles throughout the day and any help is appreciated. Thanks for posting!
