Thanks OP. The sales guy at Bunnings was kind to do a deal on Compact Hammer Drill Kit for $99. If anyone is interested, I'm happy to upload the receipt. Although bear in mind that the battery is 3.0Ah

    • Can you please? I will get my local bunnings to match it. Thanks

        Here mate!

        • Did anyone manage to get price match in Melbourne region? Northland refused.

And this week's Bunnings special was brought to you by Aldi - again!

    Thanks, Aldi :)

    • Ha, too true however if it wasn't ALDI it'd be one of a few others inc. SuperCheap. Always room for decent competition!

I am novice in this area. I need to hang stuff on wall in our room and need to drill and hang some stuff in Garage as well (brick wall). I am not sure which drill to get and what's the main difference and which is one better between the 2 below. I did read the description and believe I should get Hammer Drill instead of the Brushless but still thought to take advise from OZB community. I am confused

Ozito Power X Change 18V Rotary Hammer Drill - Skin Only - $49.89
Ozito Power X Change 18V Brushless Drill Driver - Skin Only - $49.89

So the bedroom work needs a standard Drill however the masonry/brick work will need Hammer ability so unless you're planning on drilling lots more holes in brick or concrete I'd recommend you just go for the bog standard $49 Hammer Drill as that should do both jobs without a problem. If you don't already have the Ozito Battery & Charger then you'll need to spend more to get them and this is where things can get tricky.

Up to you but you could do one of the following:
      1. $49 for the Hammer Drill plus $80 more to get the 4Ah Battery + Charger (each available separately)
      2. $49 for the Hammer Drill plus $99 more to get the 4Ah Battery + Charger + Blower in a kit (https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-power-x-change-18v-cordles…)
      3. $49 for the Hammer Drill plus $99 more to get the 4Ah Battery + Charger + Wet/Dry Vacuum in a kit (https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-power-x-change-18v-wet-and…
      4. $49 for the Hammer Drill plus $99 more to get two 1.5Ah Batteries + Charger + Small Blower + Basic Drill in a kit (https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-power-x-change-2-piece-cor…)

I'd recommend you go for either scenario 2 or 3 depending on if the Blower or Vacuum could possibly suit your other needs better. The kit in No. 4 is OK however you'll then end up with two drills and a small blower which you probably wont need plus it only comes with 1.5Ah batteries anyway which are OK but a bit on the gutless side.

      • Thanks Steve. What's the difference between Rotary and Standard Hammer Drill. Can I not use Rotary Hammer Drill for Bedroom work? If that's better and same price?

        • +1

The Rotary Hammer Drill does have a non-Hammer setting however it uses an SDS+ Chuck which means it can only use SDS+ bits, not standard drill bits as per the normal Drill & Hammer Drill with their standard Chucks. The Rotary Hammer Drill is really just for the bigger, beefier 'masonry only' type work but there is quite a lot of crossover across a lot of these tools.

        • +2

The Rotary Hammer takes special SDS+ Drill bits, which are slotted on the side and just click into the chuck, if you wanted to use regular drill bits, you would have to get an SDS Chuck attachment to use (https://www.bunnings.com.au/chuck-key-dynalink-13mm-w-sds-pl…)
or you would need to use SDS bits for everything you need, and it has f*** all torque so no good for driving screws

        • @AMOKS: So Compact Hammer Drill is my way to go.. I guess!

        • @AMOKS: Late to the party, and was wondering what the difference was. Thanks.

Option 5. Ask @whypaymo to upload his receipt and see if you can get your local Bunnings to price match.

Works out a bit cheaper than the above options if they'll do it.

        • Option 5? He only gave 4 options isn't it?

        • @ashftc: yes he gave 4 but 4wd provided him with option 5 😂

  • Any view on Brushless vs non Brushless? (be it Ozito, Ryobi, Makita, Dewalt etc.?)
    How much better is it?

    • Brushless = more control, higher efficiency, no sparking. I assume it's also supposed to provide more torque but I haven't checked the specs. One thing I have noticed with the Brushless Ozito Drill is that when the going gets tough (and I mean really tough ie. 30mm spade bit through 115 year old Ironwood framing) it simply stops. Releasing and retriggering gets it spinning again so not a deal breaker for what I've used mine for but it may be for some. I have a feeling it's just an issue in the Drill though because I also own the Brushless Impact Driver and that flies through everything without stopping. That thing is a monster! Can't comment on the other brands though sorry.

      • Have the same thing happen with my Ozito Brushless Hammer Drill, almost seems like there's a current overload cutout that seems to kick in when too much load is applied.
That was normal HSS drill bits through wood (IIRC), release/retrigger and off it would go again.

almost seems like there's a current overload cutout that seems to kick in when too much load is applied.

That's exactly what's happening. A brushless motor is electronically controlled, so if the load gets too high it'll just cut out to prevent damage.

With a brushed drill, that'd be about the time you start smelling smoke from the windings getting too hot. :)

      • Steve I just got the non brushless hammer drill and I can see sparks in the machine when I press the trigger even though I am not drilling into anything. Is this normal?

        • Yes mate, they're just sparks coming off the brushes. All very normal and will probably die down a bit once the brushes have bedded in… but you'll always see them. Completely normal & nothing to worry about at all. Just don't go using it inside a petrol tank ;)

        • @SteveAndBelle:

Ha ha I will resist the temptation! Cheers.

  • Could any one guide me with buying a Drilling and Driving Set please? Looking at a basic set to drill few screws here and there; the driving functionality would be handy! Should I get something like Makita 38 Piece Impact Driver Bit Set or Ryobi 38 Piece Drilling and Driving Set. Would it be worth buying a cheaper gear?

Don't skimp on drill or driver bits. You need them to be sharp & strong to avoid disasters like snapping half-way through or destroying difficult screw heads while trying to remove them therefore creating much more awkward knock-on effects. The ones you've listed would probably be OK but think about what you really need to do and only buy what you need. Maybe just a small, quality drill bit set like this and a couple of loose IRWIN driver bits, say a couple of No.2 Phillips? You can find the bits in a small cabinet at the Tool Shop counter in all types, lengths & sizes usually for about $1-$5ea.

      • Thanks for the advice. That’ll give me head start to try few things out.

Got the blower kit, the rotary hammer drill plus the $15 chuck + SDS adapter kit and the brushless drill. Wife used the blower today and was very happy with it, a lot easier than the corded heavy Ryobi blower we've used for years. I'll get another 4ah battery tomorrow if still $39.99. Might as well…..
The timing of this deal is good. My old Ozito heavy duty corded hammer drill failed recently and my existing lighter duty 18v ozito drill and impact driver with 2x1.2ah batteries are ok but the impact driver is a bit weak and the drill only has a 10mm plastic chuck so i think I'll appreciate the new brushless drill. When the Power X impact driver goes on sale I'll add it to the collection. Thanks OP et al.
BTW the blower kit was $125 on the shelf but $99 on the bunnings website. The tool guy said to the woman on the checkout to give me another 10% off it but after adding the drill and the chuck/ sds kit the discount wasn't applied. It was just $9.90 and not worth it for me to make the trip back to atgue the point but if you get the blower kit and the price difference is still there, try for the 10% off.

Note of caution: I just got back from bunnings at Notting Hill, Melbourne where I swapped my new brushless 18v Power X drill for the display model after opening the three they had in stock and trying them for the "chuck wobble" I had seen on my new drill after trying it at home. The chuck moves up and down on some of these drills when looking at from the side while running it. This is not ideal - a good drill should have a stable, aligned chuck. The original drill I bought was the worst of the five and all of the boxed new ones had some degree of wobble. The display drill had the least. So try your drills before leaving the store. The tool staff were happy to open up a battery for me to try all the drills and they agreed there was a noticaeble oscillation in the chucks. They said they are not meant to sell the demo stock but I told them I won't tell if you won't as I unscrewed the clip the price tag was cable-tied and screwed it onto the new drill I had brought back - it became the new display drill. to Also I noticed the new batch of drills are more orange in colour than red so would not have matched my new rotary hammer drill and leaf blower skins. Not a big deal but odd they have changed the skin colour in what is meant to be an integrated range of tools. It doesn't match the red batteries either.

    • Thanks.
      I won't tell anyone either.
