  • 3 grand laptop…still using first gen ntrig pens hmmm

    • It was a lot closer to a 4 grand laptop still using first gen ntrig pen before the discount, so..

    • Furythree,

This is an interesting point, and something that won't be mentioned on the HP site.

Would you have further information on the differences between first & second gen pen?

A search came up with mention that first gen pens were batteryless, but I know this is not correct as I have what I believe to be a first gen HP pen, and it takes a single AAAA battery.

      • sorry what i meant was if you look at the surface pro 3 from microsoft (basically the year they bought the ntrig company and switched over from Wacom that was used in 1st and 2nd gen) this pen used here is the same as that model

all the other OEMs like Asus also use this model.

Nothing wrong with it, but the latest gen Surface pens from microsoft are better designed, have a bit of weight to them, feel more premium. have better tips and most importantly are more accurate with higher sensitivity and thousands more pressure sensitivity

a casual user will not notice the difference of course

        • Hi Furythree,

Another question to you (or anyone that may have the knowledge). I don't think HP or Dell would be qualified to know the answer to this if I contact their customer support.

So, the HP Spectre's have the 1st Gen Ntrig.

It would appear that the only real competitor to this model (15" 2 In 1 with the other high specs), would be Dell (there model is the XPS 15 2-in-1 Silver smb510403au

          https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/xps-15-2-in-1-s…

Dell is using Wacom & not Ntrig. How would I work out what gen of Wacom Dell are using on this notebook, and then work out whether this is better than the HP offering?

It is my understanding that Dell will price match with HP for similar spec'ed systems.

        • @OzyBe: no easy way to tell

but wacom devices usually use the latest tech

its not really evolved much, i believe theres a new wacom standard thats to compete with the apple pencil. im a bit out of touch with pen tech for a while

  • Would this go ok with rendering 3d graphics?
Idk if I need anything else then SSD, quite a bit RAM, and good graphics card.
Might that be a bit of overkill?

    • Get a desktop then

For that amount u can get 16 core cpu and 11gb gtx1080ti for sure.

Or u get 4 core cpu and 4gb vega

    • Although this has a good graphics card for a laptop the Vega desktop GPU (or any GTX 980/1080) have much more processing power. It may work for you though it depends on the task.

    • This is comparable to the GTX 1050ti.

Textured and animated 3D models or wireframe? My 2 year old slim notebook with a 960m works really well for meshes and flat textures, no hint of struggling.

I imagine if you are also utilising high resolution textures, enhanced lighting effects with animation you'd want a desktop.

      -Edit-
People may push powerful PCs to do 3D work on, but people were rendering 3D models in the 80s and your smart watch has more power than the computers back then. It really depends on the complexity of your work.

For example, if you were modding in some items for Fallout 4, this is easily powerful enough for that. If you were making a fully animated short 3D movie you'd want a desktop to work on and a separate more powerful PC to render that work on.

  • This is the worst top end laptop I've ever had (had the Dell XPS 13 and currently have the Lenovo Yoga 920 and X1 Carbon) from the company with by far the worst customer service ever. Don't waste your time and stick with Lenovo or Dell

have had a pretty horrible customer support experience with Dell recently

      • In what way was your customer service experience bad? I'm curious, as I've had pretty good customer service from them for my xps over the last 3 years, without buying the protection cover

        • Same here. My alienware m17xr4 got shitty recently and I could manage to get full fix without buying cover.

        • Yep, my customer experience with Dell has always been amazing. I've had many laptops with them over the years. I had one laptop with HP and never again.

How long ago did you own a XPS 13? Each generation is a different MOBO so essentially a different product. Its really hard to draw conclusion from a single failed device, if I never bought anything from a company that I had previously bought a product that failed from I wouldn't buy anything these days.

    • Why? Was considering buying one

don't like the brand, so many bad memories. once a time, I bought a hp pad, the first time boot, it automatically updated itself, then got bricked, so I never had a chance to use it. Even worse, I had to make SEVEN calls to get a refund. they are so arrogant.

  • Just bought this at Harvey Norman full price. Any suggestions how I can get the discount?

    • Harvey's say they match if found cheaper within 7 days. Should be fairly easy to ask them and share the deal, or this post. They may try something along with "won't match voucher codes" but as HP is such a big partner for them and it's on HP site, you should embarrass them into a refund of difference. Start in store I would suggest.

      • Found the policy on the website. Thanks!

      Harvey normal full price.

      Ozbargain license revoked!

Don't get excited. By "full price" I don't mean $3700. Didn't need to detail

      So did I :(
Im going in today to see if I can return it. Mine has a couple of faults straight out of the box (left speaker is crackling and touch pad is iffy)

Looks like the model numbers are different so there goes the price guarantee.

    • So, I went to a Harvey Norman store on the weekend to see if they would do a price match for the HP Spectre x360 - 15-ch008tx.

I already knew that they have a different coloured model which is 15-ch003tx.

I went with the 2 spec sheets from HP in hand (as below).

      HN model https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c05958613

      HP model https://support.hp.com/au-en/product/hp-spectre-15-ch000-x36…

      They told me this:

      1. That their model (the 15-ch003tx) offers better build quality and durability than the HP model (the 15-ch008tx).

      2. That their model was designed by their CEO - I asked is that Gerry, and the rep said no, it was his wife.

      3. He then went on to say that Harvey Norman do not have access to the 15-ch008tx, even as a special order.

      4. He Tried to sell me a lower spec'ed model stating it was better than the higher spec'ed model (which they did not stock anyhow, despite the 15-ch003tx being an exclusive HN model).

Now I know point 1 above is not true.

As for point 2, it is my understanding the model difference is simply the metallic colouring being rose instead of dark silver. Which leaves me wondering, what actual designing did the CEO do? Was she presented with 3 different metallic colour cards, and she picked one out?

Point 3 - I do not know if this is true of not. I would not have thought that HP would restrict access to HN for a model that was non-exclusive.

Point 4 - does not require any comment.

I was quite disappointed considering the untruths that were given to me all within a space of 5 minutes.

I was thinking what it would be like for someone who did not have much of an understanding of computer systems.

I would write to the manager to let them know of my experience, but can't see any point in doing so.

Don't forget about the Amex HP offer from forumninja - spend $750 get $150 back

  • This was on the TVSN TV Sales channel for $18XX? a week ago

  • $2,399.25 for the same model with less storage (360gb):

    http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx?…

  • My HP spectre is pretty good but I have trouble with the touch pad and up/down keys occassionally. Also the beastie does tend to overheat when you use it for too long or it is in summer.

  • Just having a closer look at this offer.

Can someone explain how you get the HP Spectre x360 - 15-ch008tx for $2,774.25?

The HPMIDYEAR25% only appears to apply to items specially selected by HP.

Obviously I am missing something, or someone else would have already picked up on this.

    Assistance please.

    • Interesting, HP seem to have removed that item from the HPMIDYEAR25% offer, it certainly was part of it when I posted the deal.

They seem to be adding items and flipping offers on a whim, some stuff has changed since last night.

      • Hi LauralHardy,

Thanks for that information. I was starting to think that everyone on this thread was starting to lose their bargaining edge, or worse still, that I was going crazy.

I have made some further enquiries, and can confirm that HP did have this listed with 25% off.

I can also confirm, that if you contact them directly they will still honour this.

This only issue with this is that I don't think Cashrewards or Amex bonuses can be claimed, as it is processed over the phone, rather than online.

Also I visited Harvey Norman on the weekend, but will put this in a different post (within this thread).
