  • These can become incredibly energy fridges with an external thermostat. http://www.mtbest.net/chest_fridge.html

      your wording is confusing….

you should say these becomes incredibly energy EFFICIENT fridges with external thermalstat
But thanks for sharing this .

not sure if it's fully tested and widely used.

Whoops. I accidentally a word there.

        • K.

      • Is he saying that by putting the fridge on its back its saving energy due to heat rising so when it opens the cold doesmt escape? I get that but why the external thermostat? Does the built in one not work when on its back?

        • His thermostat is more efficient due to the design of not using any mains power when the compressor is off. To do this, he used a UPS to power the thermostat that only charges when the compressor is on.

Not sure what is in the link, but An external (programmable) thermostat can be used to change the minimum and maximum temperatures of the freezer, which allows it to be used as a fridge, or beer fermenter. The energy savings are partly from having less cool air escape when opening the lid, and partly from the thicker insulation that freezers use.
EDIT: followed the link, there are cheaper options on ebay. Search for stc-1000 temperature controller, if you are licensed to do electrical wiring or for pre wired an ready to use, trysomething like this https://m.ebay.com.au/itm/240V-Pre-Wired-2-Relays-Digital-Te…
These are also great for fine tuning electric heaters, as you can place the temp sensor at more useful location than inside the heater and set Max and min temps to your liking.

Is this suitable for putting outdoor under a patio?

  • Thanks OP! Been looking for a good deal for a while. Now to get an electrician to add power points to my pantry or patio!

  • I’ve had one of these units, or maybe a predecessor model, for a good eight years and it has been fine.

  • Is it frost free?

    • +3

No this style never are - they have traditional cooling elements and will gather frost over time. I think someone mentioned it has a drain plug so you have to shut it off and dethaw it from time to time.

      • +2

Year and a half has gone for me and have not had to defrost yet, I wouldn't worry about that feature for this freezer. Worst case do it once every 2 or 3 years.

  • No, you need to manually defrost every few months.

    • I get by yearly and thats mainly to remove all the pieces that fall to the bottom like frozen pieces of peas and corn and other random surprise purchases i forgot about.

      • @DarwinBoy where do you live again? :) What season?

  • Urg… I paid $298 for this freezer a year ago. Frustrating. Good deal now and great freezer.

  • Thanks, OP. Got one.

Good freezer and the chest style is a better choice. Lost power for 3 days when the cyclone went through earlier in the year. On the second day i put a bag of ice inside just to fill up excess space on top. It all stayed frozen inside till the power kicked in.

  • Anyone else notice that when you click om the link a speech bubble pops up at the bottom referring to you as an ozbargainer?

    • +1

Yeah, that's a thing. Gerry trying to get kudos or something. Kind of worked I suppose, until he became the face of hate for recent gst changes :P

Do you guys really keep that many things frozen that you would need separate freezer?

You dont stock up on the half price connoisseur ice cream?
      But yes. I do.

  • Great deal, delivery was only $29 for me, guess it depends on your proximity to a store.
