  • Hopefully this includes blu-ray as well? If there are any stores that actually have some left.

    • Hopefully this includes blu-ray as well?

      I doubt it.

    • +3

      Definitely no bluray

    • +4

If there were blu-ray, I would think staff would grab them. I know I would do that, if I was in their position.

  • +4

Tempted to buy those 40 copies of Insurgent.

    • What would you do with them?

      • +7

        Initiate the resistance.

        • against the machines..

      • Never run out of drink coasters again.

    • +1

Jennifer Lawrence was amazing in insurgents

      • +8

Shailene Woodley did a great job playing her.

      • 😂

  • +4

Why don't they just donate these to their local charity shop?

$1 is good but I threw my DVD player out years ago.

    • +4

Do you have a Blu Ray player/PS4/XBox? DVDs play on these too.

    • +1

      Because profit

    • +3

I tried to donate a lot of my DVDs a couple of years ago, in very good condition. All the charity shops locally did not want them, they cannot get rid of them.

Managed to donate some to a nursing home, through a friend that worked there.

      • +1

Probably couldn't get rid of them because they charge way too much for a 2nd hand DVD.

      • +2

Cash Converters buy them. The last trade in I did was late last year and they gave me 40c-50c each per DVD. About $2 for a DVD box set and around $3 for Blu-ray's.

        • +1

I used to get $5-$10 for single titles, $20+ for box sets. I used to buy dvds at a rapid rate (2-5 a week, sometimes 10 if I found a lot of titles I hadn't yet purchased!) I eventually ran out of space. So I started clearing out my unwanted/most unwatched dvds - CC was the place to go to offload them and get something back. I found out a few months ago at how little they give these days :(. While I don't buy dvds as often as I used to (1-2 a month… if that), it saddens me that I'll basically be offloading them for free. As someone that has not embraced Netflix or any other streaming media (save for a quick burst of youtube every so often) it saddens me that physical media will eventually be phased out. I buy my movies, but I do my own file conversion (watch them on a WDTV media device from 2010!!).

        • +3

          @hawktalk:

Keep all your physical media. Do not give up your right to watch what you want.

All those giving up physical media are running the risk of having some extreme lobbying group bully and intimidate streaming networks into censorship and banning content.

Take Roseanne for example you may like the show but and not give a toss about Barr's personal views but what are all the TV networks doing due the lobbyists complaining,? They have withdrawn it.

        • @HARSHREALITY:

They withdrew Roseanne because she made offensive statements, just like Weinstein and many others have been fired after doing things that were not endorsed by the film studio.

Nothing wrong with physical media, but keep it because you like it, not because of anything to do with "lobbyists."

        • @HARSHREALITY: 8.8.8.8 unblock a lot of services which can get around that. But generally I agree and always have physical video game media.

        • +1

          @hawktalk:

It wouldn't surprise me if CC give even less now than the prices I quoted from just over six months ago. Recently my local CC has been selling DVD box sets full seasons, 3 x $10 and were doing a Blu-ray sale of 3 x $10 or 5 x $15 too.

Last year my brother went to trade in all his heavy metal CD's he had 250+ of them a lot of rare imports some even signed that were still in great condition. The first CC he went to refused to even buy any off him and the second he went to they only offered him 10 cents per album! He told them to go jump.

        • -1

          @odysseus:

What will the PC police target next? Sexist Heavy Metal songs from the 80s.

If I own the physical media I retain the power to listen and/or view what I desire.

It is a rather sad world where people feel they are entitled to dictate to society their bigoted and ideological censorship.

There really is no difference between radical Muslims and far left activists when it comes to need to control the masses way of life.

    • That doesn't get you to the front page of OzBargain

  • +2

This sale has been going on for a while, first 20% then 50%. I doubt anything will be left at the Kmart's I've been too in VIC. But I'm going to go and check out a different one now to see what's left and if it's $1!

    • Got two CDs (U2’s new one for $5 and Aretha Franklin for $3.50) and three DVDs (Jasper Jones for $3 was the best also got Transformers Dark of the Moon $3 and Cage Dive for $5). Nothing else good there.

  • +2

Kmart are stopping selling physical media so should be DVDs, CDs and BluRay discounted at all stores (if you can find any in stock still and probably not all at $1 yet)

  • +1

Chirnside have a small stack of albums at the desk but NOTHING for a buck, the black panther album was 6 for example. No DVD or Blu-ray Ray left at all.

Eastland have absolutely nothing left period.

Can't speak for any others in the area though.

    • EASTLAND was one of the first KMARTs to get rid of all of their entertainment stock. I remember going in April/May and all the CDs, DVDs and Blu Rays were replaced with books.

  • +3

Making way for more cheap Chinese junk right?

    • As opposed to the Chinese junk we buy off here?

  • +1

Kmart Robina had Fifty Shades left, about 10 hahaha

    • +7

Must go and buy 50 of them to get all the shades lol

  • +3

Oh dang it i got tay tays album at lidcombe for 50% off lol.

    • +2

Damn, you better shake it off before we get bad blood.

    • +2

Reputation is still $6 at Kmart Launceston. What a rip-off!

  • Still doesn’t feel worth it anymore.
Shocking that not many years ago we were paying $25-30 for these

    • Shows how much the retailers were ripping customers off. I am sure JB are delighted that they now have a monopoly on physical media (CD/DVD/VINYL/BLU RAY)

      • JB don't have a monopoly though.

Just off the top of my head, Sanity, Big W, Target, Dymocks (they sell SBS merchandise), QBD (sell various book-related DVDs), Leading Edge Music still sell physical media. Along with independent stores such as Rocking Horse and Egg Records in Brisbane. In addition a lot of newsagents, service stations, supermarkets, independent book stores, convenience stores etc sell some physical media. Not to mention numerous online sellers! So it's hardly like JB has anything approaching a monopoly.

        • They may claim to now have the upper hand here but when I want a movie I will either a) go to JB Hi Fi only when the 20% off or BOGOF sales are on, b) attempt to find the movie at CEX or Cash Converters for example I just bought the 4K edition of Red Sparrow for $17 at my local Cash Converters. I just picked up Molly's game on Blu Ray for $10 at CEX
OR c) go to ebay or Amazon because sometimes they are cheaper and in some instances we never get a blu ray release in Australia so we have to go online for that format.
Point is I never shop at JB and end up paying full price, Period…even in desperation I was able to find a cheap copy of Black Panther the JB Hi Fi Steelbook edition second hand in the week it was released.

  • If its not 1080 resolution forget it

    • 576p resolution.

It feels so long ago since I watched a film in anything less than 720p resolution.

  • -7

How can there still be DVDs in 2018?! The format is from last century.

  • -1

I'm always amazed at how much people are still paying for DVD's. My local tip shop is filled with old vhs cassettes and it won't be long before it's full of DVD's.

    • +1

There are certain movies/documentaries etc that were never released on BluRay or streaming services. Although I doubt they're the kind of thing you could buy at K-Mart anyway.

  • Still only 50% off at Kmart Chatswood.

  • +3

Kmart is just a large $2 shop now.

  • DVD is really low res. But handy when the internet stops.

    • +1

Spot on. In the last 5 years on a handful of occassions ive lost internet for a few days. The dvd collection has been a winner with the kids.

    • +3

Laughs if you think DVD is low try watching VHS/BETA

      • VHS was terrible quality. Can't imagine how we stuck with that format for so long. Especially for pre recorded titles.

Once you experience blu-ray you'll never want to go back to DVD. Unfortunately there are still titles only available on DVD. Since that is the cheapest media to manufacture. Unlike CD which has superior quality to tape and vinyl. Yet vinyl is making a huge comeback with people still investing in the older format.

        In terms of quality:
        VHS/Beta -> CED Video Disc -> LaserDisc -> VCD -> SVCD -> DVD -> HD DVD/Blu-ray -> UHD 4K

        • We lived with VHS/BETA for so long as our televisions were so blurry we could not notice the difference.

The irony is now we have good high resolution recordable media and now there is nothing worth recording.

  • Kmart The Pines Elanora has no DVDs or CD what so ever

  • What I need that Tay Tay album!

Actually have they got Beyonce's Lemonade album? Cause I heard that was one of the greatest albums ever.

    • No Beyonce unfortunately… But sarcasm? Hahha

  • You paid at least $1 more than it's worth for Reputation.

  • Upscaling make's them look better on a Sony uhd player and tv .
Some come up to near Blu-ray quality and some don't.
Bought a heap of DVDs when they were 2-3 bucks weeks ago.

  • Was just at Kmart like 3 times last week but didn't go into the DVD section. Will have to go check out a few local stores. I like having the physical copy of movies and tv shows. While I prefer blu ray I wont say no to DVDs at this price if my local has any left. Also I do like special features which you don't get on Netflix.

  • +1 because of your username OP

  • I went to a kmart and there wasn't even a DVD/cd section left. Under entertainment sign were clocks and books so guess that store cleared out ages ago

  • -2

Only Blu rays left in Blacktown NSW store were $12 copies of Star Wars TLJ. Once things go down to as low as a dollar ill grab a bunch of stuff for trade in purposes at the local CEX stores. I was really hoping to find some movies I was actually looking for in the whole clearance thing. Instead all my local stores ran out of the good stuff before I had a chance to wait til they were a dollar. They began to run out when the prices were comparable to the JB Hi Fi 20% off sales.
