  • Why not use the 5% off code?

  • +2

Thanks OP. You can use 'PENNY5' code at checkout and get for $218.50

  • E3 1200 V3 is an intel processor, not a gpu.
I am very confused and curious about what is inside this thing now.

    • +2

With this price and these specs, it's integrated graphics.

    • Yeah it won't have a Xeon. It will be the i5

There isn't even an E3 1200 v3 CPU. 1200 is the range of CPUs

    • +1

It'll have the HD 4600, which was a decent step up from the HD 4000:
      https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/haswells-hd-4600-gra…

It'll be more than adequate for most media tasks.

  • Has anyone here had any experience Hackintoshing this unit?

    • google it. IIRC, you need an i7 or discrete graphics.

      • I have, indeed I've actually tried installing a few months ago. Just couldn't get video output working with the Rx250 low profile in there.

Guess a low profile GPU is the way to go :P

    • +1

I have one, it's an i7 though, and I put an nividia gtx750ti low profile graphics card in it to get 4k video output. I have been able to get usb3 working with 10.11, but it needs tweaking the config file. It was fairly straightforward with unibeast & multibeast, but i think i used a different sound driver that I downloaded from somewhere. I haven't tried upgrading to the latest version of macos.

I don't see why i5 vs i7 should be an issue though?

      • Many thanks for the info. I've been looking for a "workstation" Hackintosh to replace my aging iMac and this 9020 looks ideal. It's just frustrating that there's so much tweaking involved - especially after upgrades.

    • The CPU is a i5-4590 , so it should have a HD4600 onboard graphics.
That HD4600 CPU is supported in Hackintosh world(s). So it should simply work with multibeast/unibeast/clover configurator.

  • No OS. Does this mean no windows, or extra to have it put on?

    • +2

      WIN 8 COA

Come with COA, you need to install the OS yourself.

      • Just go to Microsoft and create the USB bootable media and install it again.

You can also upgrade it to Win10.

        • +1

I didnt think the free upgrade to windows 10 was still available … wasn't it stopped stopped only a couple months back?

        • +1

          @Matt2018: Nah, still easily available.

        • @Matt2018:

          Google it there is way.

        • Yep 99% chance the Windows 8 key on the sticker will activate Windows 10 (probably Pro edition as this is an Optiplex).

        • +1

          @ozbargainer88:

          Windows 8 key

Most they don't have key for Windows 8, they are in the BIOS.

        • +2

@superforever: Then it will activate Windows 10 automatically when connected to internet.

        • @ozbargainer88:

I am not 100% sure I think you still have to install Win8 first and upgrade?

        • +1

@superforever: No, a valid Windows 7 or 8 key is a valid Windows 10 key.

        • @ozbargainer88:

OK, Windows 7 should be OK but OEM Windows 8 on this kind of machine they won't have a key on it.

      • +1

Also most likely it'll be a Pro licence, meaning you can downgrade to Windows 7 Pro. It runs Windows 10 very smoothly too.

I wouldn't put on Windows 8 unless you really hate enjoying using computers.

    • +6

      Linux runs perfectly on these.

  • Can we simply install a wifi card on this to use wifi?

    • wifi dongle if you cant install in the case

    • yes

    • USB Dongle

I recommend this one the TP Link Archer. I get full 100/40 NBN speed when connected with my wifi connected with TP LInk VR600 VDSL modem.

      https://www.pccasegear.com/products/37861?gclid=CjwKCAjwspHa…

      • That's over 1/4 the price of this PC. Maybe get an AC dongle on eBay for $12?

        • like which one? you get what you pay for when it comes to USB Wifi dongles. The more you pay the more reliable your connection will be

        • @Homr: OzBargain didn't let me link to one on eBay unfortunately. Not sure what's going on there as it said affiliate links aren't allowed but it was a link to rover.ebay? Anyway, yeah you may be right there but I thought it may be worth a try? Would love to compare a premium one like you listed and a bargain one some day. :-)

        • +3

@robertm: When you copy a link from eBay, the end of the URL usually includes affiliate information. So you have to remove everything after the item number from the URL before posting on OzBargain.

  • July is title improvement month.

    • In future, please mention the store/retailer in the title.

That's been fixed. Moderators and power users spend time fixing titles throughout the day and any help is appreciated. Thanks for posting!

  • Are there any alternatives to the Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1050 ti low profile, which are currently going for ~$300+?

    • I would consider just getting a 2200g, built-in GPU, platform with upgrade options

      • I am thinking the same thing. What do you think of this build https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/zvr9Cb?

        • I'd go big brand name psu with at least bronze efficiency for long term reliability

        • Case looks ugly as, you'd want to hide it away. Also that PSU doesn't seem that reliable, I'd look at a better quality one.

Also missing data storage and OS.

    • From memory a couple of other brands make a low profile 1050ti (MSI and ?).

    • I assume you are gaming and want the fastest for the size available $245 at uMart for 1050ti. However if you aren't intending to game much there are a lot cheaper low profile cards that can run decently and out perform AMDs integrated offerings such as: $105 at uMart for 1030

      Gaming on 1030

      • Thanks. Will these be ok for 4K video editing? Will also change for a good SSD.

        • I just checked for video editing and yes, it's all good for editing 4K video. The max resolution its supports is 8k and it works well for video editing 4K @ 60fps. More powerful machines of course offer greater performance but you won't find it sluggish.

          Specs

The one I linked in earlier post uses GDDR5 at 2GB instead of SDDR4, so that is the better performing version of GT 1030. When it comes to gaming a 1050ti is close to twice as fast as a 1030, so the 1050ti is a better gaming card. But more than twice the price and uses more power too.

    • You can put in a GTX 1030 low profile for ~$100. Good for media decoding and Hackintoshing, not so good for games.

    • Where are you seeing 1050ti for $300+?

I got mine from PCbyte with the 20% ebay site off for $237

      • Doing a quick search on eBay. Prices are most likely inflated in preparation for tomorrow's 20%/25% promotion.

    • 1050, 1030 low profiles. GTX 750ti, GT 730. RX550.

Depends on the use case. If you're trying to add monitors then something like a 1030 or GT750ti/730 or RX550.

If you're playing games then a 1050 is perfectly capable for lightweight or e-sports titles.

      • 1050ti low profile, i get 60fps play pubg at 1080p.

  • +1

    Can this run dino crisis?

  • I assumed they are not standard ATX motherboard and won't fit in desktop case.

OP - Just FYI, use THIS link to bring the price down to $207.00 delivered.

I'm surprised there isn't a wiki for these Optiplex machines yet, considering its popularity. Something like the HP MicroServer N40L Wikia.

Is there something similar on the Internets? My Google-fu isn't up to scratch.

    • The Optiplex is more generic. There is a good wikipedia page comparing models.
What else do you want to know?
The only common question I can think of is which graphics cards fit. Easily googled.

  • Quick questions from a first time optiplex buyer:
What is needed to make it a dual display?
Anyone know any cheap deals on monitors? Used is fine, not being used for gaming.
Does it have a slot to take an extra hard drive (SSD)?

    • +3

It appears to have 3x internal SATA ports (2x are currently used for DVD drive and for 500gb 7200rpm hard drive).

You'll need to get a power splitter cable if you want to upgrade/keep the HDD and add an additional SSD. It doesn't have a spare power cable for an extra drive.

I think the machine has 2x Display port outputs. So you just need to screens and appropriate cables, and you can have dual monitor easily.

    • +2

What is needed to make it a dual display?

This unit has 2x Display ports & 1 VGA. So it should be able to do dual monitor. If your monitor doesn't have display port input, then you can purchase a Display Port to HDMI Converter for ~$2-3 from eBay

Anyone know any cheap deals on monitors?

      What size are you after?

Does it have a slot to take an extra hard drive (SSD)?

This unit has 3x Internal SATA ports (One being used for HDD and other DVD Drive). You can purchase a SATA Power Y Splitter if you want Dual Drives.

      • Thanks for your help.
Looking around 20” for the monitors but I am flexible

        • +1

If you don't mind secondhand, look on Gumtree or eBay for Refurbished stock. (Just note that purchasing monitor online, usually incur a postage cost)

If you prefer brand new, Officeworks/MSY has some 20" for ~$100 each

    • +2

FYI, with DP you can daisy chain to run two monitors off one port.
So the dual DP is not even needed.

  • Just ordered thanks OP!

Can I confirm, all I need is a wifi dongle to be able to use wifi?

    • That's correct.

    • Yes, I suggest the TP Link Archer AC1300 USB Adapter

  • +2
  • Anyone know how I can add a second 1 TB HDD to this machine?

    • See comment above from RichardL
“This unit has 3x Internal SATA ports (One being used for HDD and other DVD Drive). You can purchase a SATA Power Y Splitter if you want Dual Drives.”

      • FYI, the HDD has to be 2.5" form factor.

      • thanks guys

    • You can't fit 2 x 3.5inch drives in this machine

      Best you can do is 1 x 2.5" and 1 x 3.5"

      • +1

Couldn't you technically have 2x 2.5" and 1x 3.5" if you replace the CD/DVD Drive as well?

        • yes true you can…..

        • +1

SSDs don't need to be mounted properly, so you could easily find space for one, with 3.5" and ODD installed.

        • @manic: Can confirm, I have this exact setup - 'floating' SSD (space between memory and drives I believe), normal mounted 3.5" and ODD.

  • Does anyone know what the ram setup is. As in, is it 1 x 8gb stick or 2 x 4gb sticks?

    • Was wondering that myself. It does have four DIMM slots though.

    • 2x4gb in my 9010.

      • +1

I believe Ram Setup will vary based on what they had at the time of build. So you could get (2x4gb, 1x8gb or 4x2gb)

    • Received mine today. It has 2x 4gb RAM (SK Hynix HMT451U6BFR8A-PB)

  • Good pc, i have the i7, got a 1050ti I play pubg at like 60fps at 1080, with heaps of graphics set to low but still very good and very playable.

  • Anyone has the link for the compatible RAM specs? i have 2 x 8GB ddr3 1600 sticks lying around… wondering, if these will work? on a 7010… they don't…

    • Fairly sure mine has DDR3 1600 (9010).

      • Thanks heaps. Was a no brainer… was using stock bios… updated now it's working fine with both 8GB sticks. in. (BTW slot 1 only works with one of the modules, slot 2 works with either). Mine's 7010 USFF

  • Just got mine tonight. I don't think there is much space to put a GTX 1050 TI in.
Not even sure if a GT 1030 would fit. :(

    • You need a Low Profile GPU. Here's a video for reference

      • Naw width wise…

        • If you watch the video, you can see that a GTX 1050 TI Low Profile, fits in the case just fine.

        • @RichardL:

Think the mobo must be different cause that slot won't fit a gpu.

          What I have.
          https://imgur.com/a/rq1h4LF

        • @Tonetoro: looks the same to me. Make you remove the slot from the case.

Also which GPU are you trying to install?

        • @RichardL:

I guess I don't know much about PCI slots. thought the small one, had a end on it.

Found more info on an older post.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/374783#comment-5887771

        • @Tonetoro: I may be incorrect as I have yet to receive mine, but I believe that the GPU fits into the PCIx1 slot (the black slot)

        • @Tonetoro:
The one in the video looks like my 9010, which has the x16 slot near the CPU, allowing for a double-slot-size GPU card.

But google images says 9020 motherboards have the x16 slot next to the power supply.

        • @manic:

ahh, I do remember others make comments on the slot placement, but didn't really understand until now.

        • @RichardL:

I think you are right, I was wrong. I've never thought those smaller pci slots could fit a gpu, but googling and reading what Homr wrote in the other post makes me believe it will work, just with a small performance hit.

  • Can someone recommend some SATA cable to install another SSD?

  • Downsized from a 1070 2K to one of these with a 1080P screen. Got a Gigabyte 1050Ti $230 and Intel 535 360GB SSD $71 courtesy of Ozbargain. Very nice little gaming rig for $520, not too loud either.
