And then claim trs based on the original $1,400, bringing the final price down to $790. Very good price indeed.

    • How do you do that? I thought you had to show receipts?

    • Wouldn't you be flagged by customs for taking something that is over your passenger threshold ($900 per person) on your return given you're claiming $1400?

      • If there is two of you travelling. You can pool your passenger concession together. Thereby allowing you $1800 that you can claim.

        • Sure - hopefully the other person doesn't like to shop… I still believe you'd be flagged for review as that one item is over the per person concession.

@wolfshooter: flagged? Doubt it. My colleague bought a galaxy s9+ for around $1200 when him and his wife went to new zealand. Claimed TRS on the phone no issue whatsoever with border force upon his return to the country with said phone.

Thats between you and your fellow companion traveller and not an issue with border force.

        • @xoom: cool!

Maybe, but I know Space Force wouldn't like it.

        • @KLoNe: well they used to be called customs. now they are called border force.

        • @xoom:

          The force is so strong.

      • Take it out new. Bring it back second hand. Value has dropped.

You claim TRS on the way out, and on your return, the item has a much lower value, as assuming you've used it, it is now second hand. I'm not sure of the exact calculation for depreciation, but I gather it's around 50% for electronics.

      Interesting … looks like the policy has changed;

      https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/trav/ente/tour/are-you-a-trav…

Reading other forums, it sounds like customs don't depreciate goods on your way back into the country.

      • Interesting …. Maybe it has changed.

Notwithstanding that, I've never been asked to justify the (cameras, electronics, laptops) I'm carrying are or are not duty payable. I travel OS at least twice a year.

      • Well for my case I travel with my partner sometimes, so not an issue for me.

      • It doesn't say anything about reduction in value. So why would it have changed?

  • This is not eligible for 150 EFTPOS cash back?
