omg does Tell Coles get you 50 points!!

      • +7

I like doing Tell Coles for my 50 points :(

        • +1

When I get it, I just fill out the bare minimum and it's done in 2 minutes! I think of it as earning 25 velocity points (with 15% bonus).

    • No need to spoil the fun.

  • This whole plastic bag bollox is just that.

I never realised how big whingers Australians were until recently. I've been using my own bags for years now and it's seriously one of the easiest things of all time. I have a collection of bags in my car for when I go shopping.

    • +8

People aren't generally complaining about bringing bags. They're complaining about supermarkets spinning this as being for the environment rather than for their profits.

      • +4

The government banned the bags, Woolies will replace your 99cent bag for free if it gets damaged forever, just buy from there and take advantage of their offer

        • +6

          The government banned the bags

          Not in NSw

Woolies will replace your 99cent bag for free if it gets damaged forever

Not if the damage is due to wear and tear.

This replacement policy does not include any Bag for GoodTM bags which are merely dirty, stained or messy or which are worn or frayed due to normal wear and tear.

        • @alvian:

          Not in NSw

Berejiklian probably on here whinging about plastic bags too.

        • @Zandz:

In NSW you have to ask the bag for consent to fill it and get a clear YES before you can.

When it comes to politics why bother voting for any major party when they all drink the lefty loony Kool-Aid.

      • +2

People aren't generally complaining about bringing bags.

Really? Have you read the forums?

        • +2

But there's also plenty of people opposed because of the additional environmental harm this ban will cause through increased consumption of plastic and oil, additional greenhouse gas emissions, additional harm to marine life due to global warming …

        • -1

@newdad: I think the idea is less consumption through reusable bags.

    • +5

It's not that, it's the bullshit that it's for the environment when it's nothing more than a cash grab.

If they really were concerned they wouldn't be selling fruit and vegetables wrapped in plastic.

Or seeing they're so environmentally conscious they could donate the money they will save and make to something like Clean Up Australia.

      • +3

Why stop there.. If it was for the environment they would have by now

        • Stop printing weekly 40 page catalogues
        • Stop issuing stupid stickers when it comes to collect for kids sports goods promotions
        • Stop handing out stupid plastic discs for children to collect when most would end up in the bin after a month
        • Stop illuminating freezer, fridge and meat cabinets purely for cosmetic reasons
        • Stop printing crap offers at the end of your docket
        • Stop leaving registers on that are rarely used
        • +1

Because if they stopped doing that, people would've shat themselves further… look at the reaction of just the plastic bags… even if that was just a first step, would they ever bring in further changes?

I'm spent most of my life in Oz, but I've lived abroad at various times where this seemed to work a lot smoother… sometimes we do seem like a backwater.

        • @kiriakoz: could not agree more, honestly can't believe we're making such a big fuss of this.

  • +5

Australia is so behind. Sainsbury were giving Nectar points for bringing your own bag 10 years ago in the UK. 10 years!! They've now banned free plastic bags completely you MUST pay for one. I've been bringing my own bags into Australian shops for the last 8! It's not hard people.

  • +3

If Charles Darwin was alive today and studying the evolution of humans he would say that residents of NSW would be wiped out in a month due to the plastic bag ban. Residents can no longer carry their food home and died of starvation while they drove home from the supermarkets, having paid for their groceries but dropped it all the way to their car.

South Australians have the favourable characteristic of being able to bring their bags and grew in population. Eventually becoming Australia's highest populated state.

    • -8

South Australia is the welfare state. Great with ideas that the rest of the country are paying for. That is because the real leader of this country is Pyne not Turnbull.

  • This scheme has been in place for just a few weeks, yet because I shop online due to a back injury, I've now got about 50 'reusable' bags that will be going out with my rubbish in next week's collection. Net result - I'm paying $1 per delivery surcharge so that I have to send a much greater weight/volume of plastic to land fill. Can someone please explain how this is good for the environment?

    • +2

Woolies you can send the bags back next order - Coles you can get delivered to the kitchen bench (No bags) included in standard price.
Sorry to hear about your back.

      • +1

You realise that the Woolies thing is just the REDcycle program which you could do with the old bags?

      • Coles you can get delivered to the kitchen bench

Yeah great, I so want a trolley with dirty wheels scratching my parquetry flooring.

        • You don't have a tradies/service entrance? sucks to be u

        • @Zandz:

          You don't have a tradies/service entrance?

I do but I'm a bit shy with strangers.

    • As Zandz mentioned both Woolworths and Coles do have a bag take back programs. Coles even takes back other soft plastics.

Taken from Woolworths page re deliveries.

"Bagged: Our bags are made from at least 80% recycled plastic and are designed to be reused and then recycled in store or by returning to your delivery driver with your next order. $1.00 per order"

"bagless: Crate to bench service $3.50 (per order)"

Taken from Coles page re deliveries.

"Bagged: Your groceries are delivered bagged which can be carried to your kitchen bench, and unpacked in your home. We’ll pack your groceries using Coles Better Bags for $0.15 per bag. You will only be charged for the bags that are used. Bags and other soft plastic can be returned to your customer service agent (delivery driver) for recycling."

"Bagless items are delivered via a crate only. No fee to use this service."

All that is required in your case is a 'hey can you take these back with you, thank you' When you get your next delivery. :)

      • +2

All that is required in your case is a 'hey can you take these back with you, thank you' When you get your next delivery. :)

What is your point? You could recycle the old grey bags as well. The only difference is the new thicker bags take more energy to make and the supermarkets are charging for them.

        • +2

The point is trying to keep newdad's unwanted bags out of landfill. :)

Seems they are unaware that they have a option that isn't "I don't want them I can't get to a store so in the rubbish bin they go." It will be common for people just to throw bags out if you are limited to deliveries due to sickness/injury. Because they don't know of the take back program. So that is the point I was making.

Yes I know both Coles and Woolworths did the exact same program with the old grey bags I actually wrote that originally. But seemed a little redundant being that coles etc don't supply them any more. All good now ? :)

        • @penguincat: But the main point is they should go back to the old bags, unless they come up with a way to reuse them for online shopppers.

        • +3

The only other difference is that people are going to continue using thicker bags as rubbish bags.

But hey that is the thinking of the "thick" environmentalists and the moronic governments that go along with it.

  • +1

    Thanks for the information OP.

  • Hell yeah! Thanks, OP!!

  • It's sad that such a large number of people are so whiny about the plastic bag charge that companies have to do deals and offer free bags to appease them.

  • I see Spotlight jumped onto this bandwagon as well.
You now have to buy a bag to carry your purchases out of the store. :-((

    • In WA it’s law and retailers/shops/cafes etc can’t use them anymore, started on 1st July, fines start 1st January here for any shop caught still giving out “single use” bags.

    • -3

Why bother with bags. Just grab a trolley. If they have a trolley lock buy one of those trolley keys off eBay for a few bucks.

Then just dump the trolley anywhere in the car park once you have placed your purchases in your car. Hey with all the money they are saving they can surely afford trolley collection staff.

  • How much is 2 Woolworths Rewards Points?

    • Half a cent …

    • 1 cent

      • It's half a cent; 2000 points equals $10 off your shopping

        • +4

Each point is worth half a cent therefore 2 Woolworths points equals 1 cent.

        • +1

@pointscrazy: Whoops; was calculating it wrong. Thanks for ELI5-ing it!

  • +2

I went to both Coles stores in Miranda NSW, and they have no clue what is going on.

Eventhough it was played through Coles radio background music when i was asking them

Store manager NFI about it either….

    • +2

? Just do a purchase and don't scan a bag. If you scan a bag you miss out. If you bring your own or go bag less you get 30 points.

      • +1

I was gonna say the same thing. It shouldn’t be that complicated. As above,
Scan a bag = No Points
        Don’t scan a bag = 30 Points

  • Datapoint … Our local Sydney based Woolies just watched as people brought their own bags to the self checkout, did their shopping and left. No offer to add points in anyway.

    • Apparently you’re supposed to get the Self-Serve Checkout Assistant to count the number of bags you bring. That’s why I prefer the Coles system more (plus you even get the points if you’re topping up your Opal card haha)

      • +2

Agree the Coles system is much better. WOW system fundamentally fails - who is going to wait around to try and get the assistant's attention for an extra 1c of value. Epic fail WOW.

  • Just a long chat with a couple of Woolworth rewards employees.

It appears that there is no restriction on bag size so if you purchase 30 items and use small bags only one item per bag you will get the max 60 points per shop. They stated that this was technically correct but also "We expect our customers to treat the promotion with respect." Ummmmm that's one perspective the alternative would be that Woolworths could run a promotion that treat customers with respect and treat online and instore purchases the same and not discriminate between them.

Also pointed out the implications if everyone started doing this. Coles was so much easier. Dont have to count, use etc.

Only a matter of time before they amend the offer especially if people exploit the loophole.

With the online orders you get 30 points per order flat rate not per bag or crate.

Could not find the offer details on the rewards site found the press release statement on the group site:
    https://www.woolworthsgroup.com.au/page/media/Latest_News/wo…

which did not technically state you had to use the bags which was inconsistent with the website offer they provided which was:

    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/discover/reusable-bags?cm…

Could not find the offer on the rewards site.

It appears that only commercial or business buyers would be able to use the full 30 bag limit unless you downsized the bags so only one item fits into a bag. And end of the day its only 30 cents worth of points is it really worth the cost for employees to count and enter how many bags are being used in each shop when they are charging 15 cents per bag.

  • +1

I just got an email from Coles about the 30 points per day for not buying a reusable. Looks like they're extending the offer again. There's no expiry date in the email either.

  • can anyone confirm that their Woolworths store rewards program was down today 16 August 2018 ?

and could not add the 30 bonus " reward points" for bringing & using the own bag !?

    oh Woolworths

    Suspicious of you
I 've always been suspicious of you

    Why are you so…

    ( " my store " Marrickville Metro NSW )

    • Did you spend $5?

      • How is spending $5 relevant? I thought this offer was no minimum spend?

        • +3

You have to spend $5 for the bag question to appear.

  • yes i did spend over $ 60.00

as lured back into store with targeted offer to spend 50.00 for 2 weeks to earn bonus points ,

which did not only show on docket,

but also there was no option to get the 30 points to bring / use my own bag

    feel cheated

and am returning everything today , to ensure my promised bonus pints are given

    • It sounds like your Woolworths Rewards card didn't register properly.

  • @ pointscrazy - no…I was told that the system is down

, ( just posted this to find out if any other shoppers were given this information )

  • +1

    I feel cheated.
Woolies staff claimed no more barcode for counting bags.

  • No 30 bonus pts in Woolies today.I think it ended yesterday. Not sure about Coles.

    • I heard a rumour that Coles had finished the promotion.

There was nothing on my receipt from Woolworths about the extra 30 points but it was included in my points total.

      • +1

I bought something from Coles on Tuesday and got the 30 points yesterday

        • +1

Sane here. Still got the 30 point bonus for a transaction on Tuesday. I don't believe Coles have set a firm end date. I haven't tested the Woolworths deal for myself lately but i'll assume it has ended based on comments above. I made another eligible transaction today at Coles so i'll keep checking my activity to see if it keeps going.

          • @melbourne guy: I think it will last a lot longer in Coles. After a few days,Woolies will feel being "cheated" and offers 30 bonus points again.

Edit:30 points credited for the shop on 3rd Oct.Still on in Coles.

    • I bought stuff from Woolies yesterday but didn't get the prompt saying did I bring my own bags to get the 30 points

  • +2

Coles deal is also over; haven't gotten the 30 points for my last few shops

    • +1

Yeah last time I got my 30 points was on October 8 so it must be finished.
