  • Any one got the wireless headphones?
I was wondering if you buy 2, can you run both pairs off the same basestation?

    • +5

Yea we did last year my friend and I bought 2 they are crap, returned them with in 7 days.

      • +3

just to add to this, they make your TV audio feed sound like AM radio.

        • +1

          Absolutely correct.

  • +3

The TV looks like a great deal, can anyone comment on this model's input lag for gaming?

    • Won't know until this model is released.
Model number is dated "0718", so as usual with Aldi TV - useless comparing with previous (different) models.

    • +3

it has a 60 day satisfaction guarantee according to the feature list. If the box will fit into your car then you've got nothing to lose but your time and effort if you don't like it.

Excellent point what a great store policy!

        • +1

Standard Aldi policy on all Special Buys
That way they spend nothing training staff about products & suppliers cover costs of taking used product back. It's simply cost saving for Aldi.

It's all about making it easy & reassuring for the punter to buy. Once they get it home, most don't return products.

        • @Infidel:

I reckon it would be the supplier absorbing the costs. Also would be returning the refunded items to them.

          @chalky:
As I said… suppliers cover costs of taking used product back

From my discussion with main supplier of TVs to Aldi (they contacted me for help), supplier gets no feedback of reason for return, so it doesn't help them improve model for next sale.

        • @Infidel:
I think the supplier usually knows the faults well before it gets to Aldi's warehouse.

I bought the first (one of the) 4K TV when it came to Australia, and Kogan was quick to make a special arrangement to import them from China. It turned out to have a lot of problems, where practically speaking, a FHD TV was actually much better quality. So I ended up returning it, and it costed me $70. That sucked. Its better to not fall for such low prices or buzzwords. Early adopters always get ripped off. Its better to dissect the product, read the reviews and get some hands on before purchase.

          @Kangal:
Early interactions with supplier did not give me that impression. They were usually surprised when someone told them of faults. Of course by that time they did have production units on test themselves. But faults in their units usually only had time to show up after Aldi's sale date.

My experiences with the supplier are now a little dated, so systems & processes should have changed. Consumer's impression of what goes on at the suppliers or Aldi does not reflect the reality.

They complained to me they did not know why units were being returned. Only after a few had been returned with same obvious fault were they aware. My detailed reviews were sent to the factory with the intention to improve production quality.

When the Aldi supplier offered me preproduction units to review & test, I asked about seeing production units before Aldi sale. None would be available. If I found faults, no modifications to units would be possible as they were in transit from China by that stage. On that basis I declined their approach.

Preproduction units may vary from model released - especially in firmware. So although occassional faults can be known before release, many faults only show after consumers push the units to the limit. That's where the supplier sought my experience & feedback.

Aldi & it's suppliers outsource testing to us as consumers! As such buyers should be aware of this & the price should reflect this lower standard.

Also quality control was a major issue at the time. So faults may vary in same production. In my sampling, many were DOA. Those faults do not usually show in a preproduction unit. The rush to meet shipping & Aldi sales deadlines mean testing was very limited. Hopefully that has improved.

I've only owned 1 Aldi trademarked consumer electronic unit - a 1TB PVR I helped diagnose firmware faults on. After 6 years of nearly daily service, the PSU recently failed. I can fix it, but probably not worth it. That's pretty good life for a sub-$200 device.

I would not recommend Aldi electronics.

        • @Infidel: You consult with electronics manufacturers? Never heard of that as a job before, assumed they'd do it all internally, interesting…

        • @abb:
Almost everything in life can be paid work. eg The food industry, restaurants & takeaways are just work you otherwise do in your kitchen. It's just thinking about & packaging it in a different way. Trade on your experience.

The supplier rang me for help. I don't usually consult on quality control & firmware issues, but have lectured in IT (before I had a degree!). Through my own business, I consulted with businesses and supported successful clients (local head of multinational, Minister of Government, sports people, etc).

Being paid to get to know successful people - interesting, varied & well paying work👍

It only has one year for warranty which is a bit of a concern, aldi tvs are normally 2 years. Could indicate that these don't last as long as they should.

        • Isn’t Australian law 2 years?

        • @AustriaBargain:

Don't know the exact details, but I believe you have to pay a certain amount for it to be assumed you are entitled to two years. If you buy headphones for 20 bucks and it breaks in 1.5 years you'll have a hard time getting a warranty claim. DYOR

Is the power meter any good, or is there a better one elsewhere for around the same price?

    • +2

It's pretty good. Had one for number of years now.

      • Cheers mate - will grab one and test it out.

        • +2

Although 4 times the price, it might be better to have one of the smart wifi switches with power meter. Depends on your needs.

If the power meter shown is the same inside as the one I have (different brand, but looks the same), then they are very good. I think I paid about $40 four years ago.

New model may not be anything like previous models. (Standard warning with all Aldi Special Buys™. Aldi arranges supplier to have stock for a sale date, which may be from different factories for each sale.)

Given that proviso, have a 2010 model. Still works well. Graphs different daily consumption over a week which is handy feature. Enter your kWh power costs to display running cost.

Bought a few TP-Link Smart Wi-Fi Plug with Energy Monitoring (HS110) for $31ea delivered on eBay Plus sale. Worth the extra price for Wi-Fi controlled switch & energy monitoring on phone. Integrates with home automation (Google Home etc). Can program consumption targets to switch off appliance. (Yet to use.)

Consider how much you need an energy meter. In my experience, most people only use these for a week or 2, then it's forgotten.
I have several including a Jaycar that used to be loaned out. Reports that some libraries & community centres might loan them out.

These can be useful & cost little.
Handy to learn about your appliance running costs. Can move 1 between appliances & check seasonal consumption changes.
Not accurate for low power consumption devices like plug pack powered units.

Downside is if monitoring consumption is seen as an intrusion by (high consumption) family members… Currently alone & latest electricity bill totals 50c/d (mains electricity is only energy source, wasn't allowed to install solar😢).

60 days might be long enough to try, then return😉 They go on sale each year. (Bought mine discounted to $10 after sale & returned $15 one.)

        Good post - cheers ;)

      • My local store still has 10 power meters left - so price will probably drop soon.
Useful graph of daily consumption in my 2010 model, but not in later or this model.

  • Does anyone know how the TV compares to the Kogan 55” one for $550?

  • Anyone check the TV's out today?

I got there early and lined up. Nabbed one (of only 7 available at my store). I thought this was good timing since my 60" LG finally died last weekend.

Quite frankly, I'm very disappointed in it. YMMV.
Light bleed is very bad on mine. Like, bad enough that my wife even commented immediately (and half the time she can't tell/doesn't care about HD vs SD).

I'm not interested in a smart TV, and I realise there's compromises to be made for a cheap tv, but this backlight uniformity issue is bad enough that I can't accept it. I'll be returning the unit at my earliest convenience. Probably just as irritated that I have to go to the trouble of packing it up, but very thankful that Aldi has an awesome return policy.

I've actually never seen an issue quite like this before… it extends in diagonals from each corner, in toward the centre of screen. I'm used to seeing it around the outermost edge. Mine is most prevalent on white screens, but also very noticeable on black screens. I could see it immediately on boot up with the vivid blue.

I returned a little later to buy the TV mount bracket, and saw that there were 2 x 75" TV's from previous sale. They didn't look like repacks, but I've certainly been underwhelmed with this purchase, being quite an Aldi fan.

      • Thanks for taking the time to write that, guess I'll give it a miss based on that!

Off topic of this thread, but further feedback on Aldi; I also picked up the 20v brushless drill while I was in store. I have a Panasonic 18v atm, but it's getting long in the tooth so I figured I'd give the Powerzone one a go since I already have the battery from the garden blower.
Again, disappointed, and have already returned for a refund (since it was easy to slot back in the box). Not even close to the same torque as my ~5 yr old Panasonic. Couldn't drive a coach screw in to pine (with pilot hole), yet my old drill did it with ease.

Definitely not a terrible drill, but temper your expectations :)

    • +1

Aldi's new slogan for its Special Buys™temper your expectations:)™

  • Bought the power meter; best comparable price on eBay is $17.85 to be delivered up to 2 months from now. Curious to see how much we spent on heating this winter…
