    10/100 Mbps.

    • Want to say the same.

    • +5

Maybe it's a retro thing, people might want to buy it to remember the old days

      • +9

Nobody is going to buy it for wiring up a LAN, but for security cameras, it would be perfect. You're not going to see many PoE switches at this price.

    • +1

      You misquoted:

fast Ethernet connections of 10/100 Mbps

    • +1

It's because the other 900 Mbps are being converted to PoE POWER :D

    • +7

Would be great for my LAN party in 2002

    • -3

Right? My light switches are connected via 400Gb/s ethernet, but only as a stop-gap measure until terabit comes out.

  • Fast ethernet connect 10/100?

    100/1000 is insane speed then?

    • +3

I've always found it weird when people use descriptors like that for evolving industries..

HD, FULL HD, ULTRA HD! What's next?

      This one goes to 11.

      • +1

        What's next?

        Super Dooper Ultra HD

      • +1 for Spinal Tap reference.

      • They did this with RuneScape and it was the day Runescape died.

        Runescape -> Runescape 2 -> Runescape HD -> Runescape 3

Wait til you hear what they call the different versions of USB ;)

  • +6

10/100 equates to a maximum of 12.5MB/s transfer speeds.

      • +1

Not everyone is a geek and knows there's 8 bits in a byte

    • +13

10/100 equates to a maximum of 12.5MB/s transfer speeds.

      Doesn't 10/100 equate to 0.10?

      • Can't fault the logic.

  • +1

no stock around my area (postcode 4000)

    • +1

Show's instock for the Gabba store.

    • +18

not really. 10/100 is fine for running POE devices like security cams and for $15 you cant go wrong specially when a Ubiquiti 8port switch is $160+. I run 12 Ubiquiti Unifi G3 cameras around my house and all are connected to a Ubiquiti 24 port POE Switch. Even thought the switch is a Gigabit switch, the cameras are still running at 10/100 and only consume about 3.2W each. The only other POE devices connected to my switch that need 100/1000 are my 2 ubiquiti antennas and 2 ubiquiti APs

      • My concern would be that if you had 8x HD cameras going to an NVR, would 100 mbit be enough to output the all the video streams simultaneously?

edit: I notice only 4x ports are POE

        • +1

Yes, because it's just the bitrate that matters. 4 HD/4K cameras running at 4-10Mbps is only a max of 40Mbps.

    • Don't use it for your PC then. CCTV cameras and VoIP phones can be powered over Ethernet too.

Our civilization has lasted thousands of years without anything faster than 10/100. Lots of things will be fine with this

      • Which civilisation exactly? The Mayans? Ancient Egyptians? Incans? Babylonians?

        • All of them and more

        • @Neo: By "lasted", you meant no longer exists? Cool. We have very different meanings then.

      • Nah, it took them thousands of years to download all their files using the pyramids-to-moon connection. The bandwidth was terrible!

I mean, you're talking one session per night (if it's not cloudy) and then having to deal with things like eclipses, supermoons and the pay-per-call-with-blood tech support calls (the Mayans were NOT very computer literate).

    • What speed is your home internet? Mine is less than 100Mb/s :(

  • +2

Better fire up the DeLorean for this to feel like a fast Ethernet connection.

    • +1

We'll, technically, it is "Fast Ethernet" (anything IEEE 802.3u compliant can claim that). But it's not "fast" ethernet.

  • As the others said, 10/100 isn't ideal at all. The only benefit this switch would be for are PoE cameras, then you can just hang it off your main gigabit switch (or router).

    • +4

correct. $15 is great considering the ubiquit 8port switch is $160+. This unit is great if you are only planning to use them for cameras.

  • Is 10/100 good for 4MP security cameras?

    • 4MP being your resolution (double 1080p) doesn't have a bearing on the bandwidth.

What are your bandwidth requirements per camera? Mine max out at 16Mbps which is well within the 10/100 on this switch.

    • +2

Assuming a 'normal' camera, yes. The resolution does not matter, it's the bitrate that matters. A 'standard' bitrate for most CCTV cameras is about 4-6Mbps. Some go up to 16Mbps. Even high-end ones like this 8MP Avigilon has a max bitrate of 36Mbps.

Just keep in mind that your total uplink is also limited to 100Mbps, so your cameras need to be set to under 25Mbps each as there are 4 PoE ports.

Of course if you were running such high-bitrate cameras, I'm pretty sure your switch budget would be much higher than $15. :)

  • +3

Thanks for the post! This will be perfect for tidying up my current setup. PoE cameras and phones have zero benefit from a 1000Mbps switch. This 8-port switch with 4-port PoE is cheaper than a single PoE injector too. Hope my click-and-collect order goes through as there's no stock around me (postcode ~4000).

    • +1

same. I place an order for 2 so i can setup cameras at my parents and sister houses.

      • +8

        Ewww, sick.

        • +1

lol.. its not for what your thinking. its ubiquiti cameras for the outside of their houses for their security.

      • +4

        Jamie Lannister: "Nice"

    • Same here. Just placed an order.

I actually bought the same switch for $45 at OW before EOFY. I will return the old one if this one gets through.

    • Yeah unless you use enterprise class APs most PoE devices don't benefit from 1Gbps speed. HD cams will work well on 100Mbps too.

  • +2

Incase anybody was wondering, this is a 802.3af (48V) switch.

    • What does that mean?

      • +5

It means that it complies with the 802.3af standard which specifies 48V.

  • thanks
not available locally but allowed me to order for click and collect with future date
Guess we will see if it turns up

    • Well i just recieved the umbrella email from OW from months ago saying order is ready, so hang in there.

  • +12

    Perfect for most NBN speeds…

  • Thanks for posting…

  • +16

jeez people whinge a lot! no wonder people hesitate about posting.

this is perfect for a small cheap home security system!

    • +4

It's even fine for most home networks. Unless you're copying large (multiple GB) files around, 100Mbps will be 'ok'.

    • +2

You'll learn quickly that people are stupid. I bet most people who are complaining about it being 10/100 would only buy it as an expensive paperweight because cheap.

I got mine to stick in the toolbox because small switches like this are super useful onsite. Especially with POE, so thank you!

      • There's not much on PoE that requires GbE. And even if it requires GbE then pay for it.

I see these switches as addition to the GbE switch you already have.

I mean I pay more for PoE injectors…

        • That's why my intention is in the toolbox as a temporary solution for troubleshooting. Good for setup of cameras and access points.

  • How many watts per port can they output? What is the total POE wattage across all ports?

  • Was about to buy until I realised its only fast ethernet. It's a shame its not gigabit!

  • I bought a sg108pe for $88 the other day. Nearly cried when I saw this deal until I read it is 10/100. Feel better now.

    • +2

You could have bought this plus an 8-port gigabit switch which would give you 7 gigabit ports, 3 10/100 ports, and 4 10/100 PoE ports for $40 total. ;)

  • Nice cheap unit for provisioning WAPs and Cams at your desk.

  • +1

    No stock

  • Handy to have for CAMS, phones or as noted above Access points. Thanks OP. Worth a gander!

  • +1

Newcastle West NSW seems to be the only store with limited stock i could see.

  • bought one. thanks OP.

Perfect for my home lab and surveillance lan.

  • +1

Not a lot of stock on this.

  • Perfect for POE devices for avoidance in running separate power source.

  • Perfect. Ordered one. Nice Cheap POE option so I don't have to have the Hikvision NVR with POE fan noise.

    • -1

      Different devices, so cant compare.
This one is just POE. Hikvision is NVR which not only is POE switch, but also stores and controls cameras.

      • Maybe they have a fanless PC with Blue Iris/Milestone or Zone Minder :P

        • May be….
Why will he use Hikvision NVR at first place then? Waste of money I would say.

      • I know. The fan in the POE hikvisions NVR is noisy. To combat this you buy the non POE version which doesn't have a fan and use a fanless POE injector. (No fan noise at all).

        • oooo. Didnt know that. Haven't got notification to pick it up yet from store.

  • It let me order but seems like no stock anywhere for Click and collect

  • Thanks for post! Perfect timing since Im testing out different HIKVision Cameras which are all 100M anyways. I grabbed 3, thought better to have one spare. Seems like a price error at this price ? It is a special order item, maybe manufacturer is trying to clear out stock ?

  • cant add to cart now.. hmmmm somethings up

    • same issue here, can't even access the page, just takes me back to the list of switches

  • Mine's ready for pickup now. That was quick! The store I selected didn't have stock.

    • whao! I would pickup ASAP. What was the ETA on cart for your store ?

      • +1

It was meant to be the 26th of July. I might go later today!

        • good job :)

        • @darkage: Picked mine up yesterday. It was really quick, maybe they had one lying in the back.

  • +1

just picked mine up. Great bargain!

    • great! mine is on backorder.. hope it comes

    • I have not got any reply from the store yet for pickup .

  • Got an email with Invoice and saying order was being prepared for Pickup………I was nearly going to store but then read, ETA is 29 Jul!

  • Any else got theres yet ? From above it looks like just 2x QLD ppl.

    • nope, and my order number also shows 'cant be tracked' on their site (not sure if that means anything)

      • same here but you will probably have to wait until it comes off back order for any movement in tracking Im guessing.

  • I got a delivery estimate of 06-Aug. I am happy to wait.

    • Did that come as an email?
