Found the Microsoft Surface Go for $498 at Harvey Norman which is a $100 discount. JB have it for $598 still and the Microsoft Student Discount takes it down by $30 only.

Haven't seen it cheaper elsewhere but it is still preorder.

          Because you can?

Tablets are not meant to be desktop replacement, so obviously there will be drawbacks when you try and use it as one. That is true for any tablet.

doesnt change the fact the type cover and pen costs $340.

Surely, being a member of OzBargain, you realize that smart people don't pay RRP for these things?

The fact you can buy a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard to run it as a desktop defeats your point
First you want to run it asa Desktop then when you get shown up you want to buy the portable accessories next you’ll say you need a 4K 80” monitor lol

        • +1

Agreed, not everyone has the opportunity to own multiple devices - nor the opportunity to buy all the additional accessories.

$800+ for a limited spec Windows device with a pen and type cover is poor value, granted this price is meant to be a 'deal'.

using Windows on a touch screen is not fun. I tend to do a lot more typing in Windows than I do on Android or ios. It's more a productivity OS than the latter two.

If all you want to do is youtube and chrome, W10 is a bit heavy an OS for that. I'd rather use an ipad.

why would you buy a tablet with the primary aim to use it as a desktop??

Not desktop, laptop. Laptops have keyboards too.

A tablet isn't meant to replace a laptop. But adding that keyboard makes it a 2 in 1 and doubles its versatility, saving you the money to buy a laptop and a tablet. One device is cheaper than two. That's the whole point of it supporting a keyboard cover in the first place.. so that it can replace your laptop if you want it to.

Yep. And if you don't plan to use it as a desktop, you're better off with an Android tablet for tablet-functions.

Like an aggressively priced car. Good price on the car itself, but it's missing some key features and if you add some options, they are expensive and end up costing the same price as another not so cheap but feature complete car and then it's no longer a bargain.

Charge cheap for the base unit but make sure it's missing some features you really want, and then overcharge on those features. This is common with Surface.

I thought we are boycotting HN.

Also, buy from US and just shipito aus

so you dont have a warranty and you pay more?

    • +1

I don't think thats possible here. Most OzBargainers here cant wait to love HN whenever an Amex deal comes along

    • We hate HN, but we love deals more…at the end of the day, it’s about who can porovide the best price for a given product. If HN provide the most competitive price, so be it…

I disagree with Gerry’s views, but I can’t deny that over the years, HN have become a bit more competitive every now and then, even though they’ve been forced to in many cases.

  • Does it have a fingerprint reader? Seems pretty crazy not to considering Windows Hello is not recommend as a secure method.

  • If you have the money, I recommend the Surface Book of eBay Microsoft during the 20% sale. It’s goes around $1400.
It’s more, but it is worth it if you are doing more than just web surfing.

Nope. I'm done purchasing devices that can't be easily repaired. My SP4 digitiser failed one month out of warranty.

    • +1

You know you'll still be covered under ACL right?

    • Ms is good with repairs as well hop on chat and they sort it out for you

    • Yep, I refuse to buy any Surface product for this reason. The second it's no longer covered by warranty and something fails, it's disposable. Not single thing can be repaired.

I'll support companies who don't make disposable computers.

      • The second it's no longer covered by warranty and something fails, it's disposable. Not single thing can be repaired.

So where does MS get their refurbished replacements from?

        • Anything can be repaired, but you have to destroy parts of the machine to open it up. Refurbished replacements are usually reused boards or screens, but have some new casing parts and batteries, etc.

Same when you get a warranty replacement iPhone.

So they're repairable IF you have a factory handy.

        • @KentT:

Anything can be repaired, but you have to destroy parts of the machine to open it up.

No you do not. All you need is heat to soften the adhesive. The manufacturer will obviously have a custom rig to apply heat to the right places. For phones, small shops can already buy LCD separators to disassemble unibody phones.

So they're repairable IF you have a factory handy.

Yes - I was talking about the manufacturer doing repairs, not that booth in Westfield. The poster I replied to is refusing to buy any surface product because they claim the moment something fails, the product is disposable because absolutely nothing can be repaired, hence calling the products disposable.

That is absolutely false as you've agreed to - Surface products can be refurbished by Microsoft. They do not end up in landfill the moment something fails.

You do not need a factory to repair a surface product, you just exchange it with Microsoft. If it's out of warranty you just pay a standard fee and get a replacement.

Great device. Doesn't get warm like and is very responsive. Just wish they had more option for a minimalist case

    Either way strongly recommend

  • Would this be a worthwhile upgrade to a Surface Pro 4 with Core m3?

    • +1

it is a downgrade…. unless you want a smaller screen ~

Looks like JB Hifi price matched

is there any place that has demo models that you can test and play?

  • hmm isn't windows 10 S limited to only windows-store based apps? isn't this the same thing as the failed surface RT ? not being nasty here just wondering

    • Yes, but this does not come with Windows 10 S. Windows 10 S does not exist any more.

This comes with Windows 10 in S mode. You can turn off S mode for free through the Microsoft Store app. That'll give you normal, regular Windows 10.

      • This is can run regular Windows 10 means I can I steal Windows autocad ?

        • Yup. You can even steal Solidworks. You just need to find a good torrent site.

(yes you can run Autocad on it, but I probably wouldn't!)

  • Looks like the prices are back to normal at Harvey Norman. Jbhifi still has them on special. Not sure what’s going on.

    • Dirty tricks from Gerry. Trying to catch out the professionals.

      • Trying to catch out the professionals by giving them good prices?

  • Someone at HN stuffed up and JB Price matched them. I've now pre-ordered at JB to lock in the price for the 128gb!

  • Looks like the Surface Go product pages have disappeared from the JBhifi website.

    • -1

Damn, started the order at 9.25am and went to a meeting. Come back now and it's gone!

      • Not sure why you got negged. I got HN to honour the price, no luck with JB it's not even on their site

      • Looks like it was a price error that got matched.
So annoyed I didn't jump on this! I figured such good prices for pre order meant it would be cheaper in no time.
        What an idiot.

  • +1

I was tempted to get the $498 one, but 64gb isn't enough, so the 128gb at $698. Then the type cover $200 and pen $130. Suddenly I've doubled my spend from $498 to over a grand. Ultimately, I decided to get a used 256gb i5 Surface Pro 3 with keyboard and pen for $460. Yes, it's 4 year old tech, but I imagine it'll be faster than the Go and almost as portable.
