Help Nominating a Hand Written Fine

Hi, a week ago I gave my car to a friend so he could go get food and come back home.

He double parked outside the food joint and a police officer took the car's picture and said he'll get a fine in the mail, he didn't give our was asked for any details.

Today I received the fine but it's a handwritten one and addressed 'to the owner'. It doesn't have demerits on it and my friend is going to pay but I don't want the fine on my name because I didn't commit the offence and my history has 0 offences.

How can I nominate my friend for this with the handwritten fine, please help.

Does the fine have a contact us section? A phone number anywhere?

Sounds dodgy. Are you sure your "friend" isn't pulling a swift one on you?

  • When you say handwritten, do you mean on a notepad/blank paper, or on a form? Maybe post a picture up with personal info redacted.

Standard hand written fine. The officer may have noticed the registered owner wasn’t the same person as who was driving

      I wouldn’t worry. It’s just a parking offence….

Just tell your friend to pay it. If they start making excuses “I’m getting paid this week”, “I’ve gotta pay rent/credit card / whatever” “and don’t have the money” then have it reissued in their name.

If it's a genuine fine it should have a section on the back where can nominate who the driver was, then you send it back and they sort it out. Not sure if that the same with parking fines or not? If it is just a parking fine then no, you wont lose any points so might as well pay it (or get your friend to) if you think it's genuine unless you want to challenge it. Handwritten sounds a bit sus though?

This apart from the "Handwritten sounds a bit suss" part.

If you have any doubt, take it into a Police Station and ask them to confirm it's genuine, and then request to make a statutory declaration to have it re-written in your friend's name.

  • Where are you located? I've never heard of a handwritten fine coming in the mail.

I've had one come in the mail.

Recently add no left turn sign (peak hours) and the cops had an operation to highlight the new sign. When the fine came, it was a hand written fine.

      This is in Victoria.

  • Call the number on the fine?

    • Could be a fake number though.

      • A quick search in Google should be able to verify it's authenticity.

  • Call whoever issued it, the police presumably, and verify that there's a record of it.

Don't use the number on the notice.

  • Did you complete the change of registration form and lodge it before your friend illegally parked?

If so, the fine ought to have been in his name automatically.

If not, next time don’t wait a whole week.

    • I'm pretty sure OP means that they lent the car to a friend, not that they flat out gave them the car to keep.

      • Actually, it’s his friend who should have lodged the change of registration within the week before he parked illegally.

        • Lent, not sold.

          @tomsco:

It is said that no kind deed goes unpunished.

OP, if you gave me your car to go the shops and back home again…. very generous indeed…. I wouldn’t park illegally.

  • Police give out parking fines? Thought they stuck to on the road stuff and left parking to the council employees.

  • Of course police can issue parking related fines e.g Handicapped spot, yellow line etc. I assume by “hand written” note the OP is referring to a hand written traffic infringement notice written by the police officer rather than the electronic printed ones that parking officers issue.

  • Any update on the outcome?
