    Good spotting, cheers OP!

  • a few years back when they had 20% off specials, I got a few for ~$53. Should've got more and sell them back to VC

  • +3

wow, Dans have jacked the price. I use to always buy this for around $65. It's nice, in the same category as Glenfiddich 12 and maybe a little better.

    • wow, often $65-$70 in BWS and Liquorland in the past

    • its usually $65 on sale at DM and sometimes $62. Few months ago it was $59 picked up a few

    • How can you compare a blended whisky to a single malt?

      • +3

        It's a fair comparison because being a blended malt, it's a blend…of single malts.

This is not the same as a blended whisky which is a blend of lots of grain whisky, and a little malt whisky.

        • Precisely

Mind you, this is a bit peaty and is very different from Glenfiddich (Highland/Speyside).

A mild, affordable introduction to islay

        • A blended whisky is like painting with many different colours, making that painting is to enjoy the whole final product.

A single malt whisky is like painting with ONE colour, making that product is to enjoy that single colour.

        • @dzekas: And a blended malt is like painting with what?

        • @dzekas:

There'as a blended whisky - Which is several vastly different malts from different distilleries blended and watered down with cheaper grain spirits to produce the particular profile the blender is targeting at a particular price point

There's a malt blend - Which is several vastly different malts from different distilleries blended to produce the particular profile the blender is targeting at a particular price point

There's a single malt - Which is several vastly different malts from one distillery blended to produce to emphasise that particular distillery's style/terroire/character by the blender at a particular price point

There's a single cask single malt - Which is one malt from one barrel in one distillery selected for its qualities and bottled to showcase that particular cask.

The colour/picture analogy you present is problematic because it implies that blending always produces a more complex flavour profile… I would strongly disagree. In fact the most prominent blends on the market are largely aimed at producing a crowd-pleasing balance of an easy-drinking product that conveys a feeling of luxury to the consumer (by, say chill-filtering for clarity, adding caramel to boost colour and putting it in a fancy bottle). More often than not the single malts and independent bottlings in particular are more expensive to produce, and are targeted at whisky nerds who appreciate more complex and interesting flavour profiles.

      • I am comparing a vatted malt to a single malt. There is only malt grain here

Feel sorry for the poor souls who paid hundreds for this when they pretended that it was gone forever

    • In that recent ebay 20% off sale there were bottles going for ~$300 and they seemed to actually be selling.

      • +2

The old discontinued bottles apparently taste a little different to the re-released ones

    • +1

      Different blends.

This one is a new blend and would taste different.

      • $250 different?
that's enough for another 2 bottles of reasonably decent single malt on sale..

Just had First Choice beat this. Sold for $66.95.
Strangely, it said unavailable in store at my local Vintage Cellars but I called them and they had three.
First Choice said the same (unavailable at my local store) but they had plenty.

  • +1

Just wait until. Dans have their sales.
It's often down as low as 56. But usually about the 65 mark

I usually buy a few cases when it gets down to that price

    • If it went into the 50's, I will buy multiple bottles… I am an irregular drinker, so I expect this bottle to last me at least a year. Surely a Dan's sale will come up in that time - and someone better post it on Ozbargain!

I bought a bottle of this last time it came on special, and call me a heathen but I was a bit disappointed. I got a lot of smoky dirt and some timber, but not a lot else. This stuff, however I would strongly recommend. https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_792092/aberlour-12-… It does occasionally go on special.

    • That's probably the Talisker making itself known.. A small, but vocal, minority of us like smoky dirt though :)

    • Aberlour 12yo is good for $60~$70.
I'm not a fan of Talisker too much dirt in the smoke for me, my usual is Balvenie.
I picked up a bottle of The Singleton 15yo https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_682795/the-singleto… last week and I think it's pretty good mix of spice, peat and sweet.

I think it was less than $30 in Port Vila duty free, that's when I stock up :)

    • That still massively cheap there?
I remember in 2001 getting bundy Black 1.6ltr for $20-odd.

      Sooooo nasty.

      • When Aus $ was up, on a US cruise ship 1 litre Base spirits (Beam, absolute, Jamesons etc) were $8, jacks $12, Glen Fid $18. Villa is now the best though. Taxi driver got me even better deals in Villa. I split a 6 pack with him driving home as payment… Good times!

        • *oh yeah. Dont get this. Go Aberlour or Jamesons stout cask. Much better.

  • +8

Which cola to mix this with?

    • +3

      LA Ice

      • +2

        Mr fancy over here

  • It might have been cheaper before. But if anyone can find me an all malt whisky (so no cheap shitty grain whiskies) that are at least 15 years old, I'd be most interested!

  • Match & better at Dans $65.00. Springwood.

I'm in the fortunate position of not being able to tell cheap booze from pricey booze. If it's alcohol it works.

  • Ho ho hooo.. Johnny Walker green.. I didn't know they made it in green :D

  • How does this compare to Island Green? Are they similar in taste or very different?

  • Less gingery than stones ,
but I'm pretty sure they filter it through dirt so..

  • +3
    • Sounds like they're going to be my first choice now

  • Bought this round this price in the last deal - its pretty good for $65 but prefer the glenfiddich 15

  • Dan’s have since dropped their price down to $64.95, First Choice have gone down to $65.
