  • Get two and have an amazing AiMesh system. Will cover a lager house. Can have either wireless or Ethernet backhaul.

  • Good price, just be aware that the Chinese import models don't have as many wifi channels available for use.

    • Really, I just thought changing country in settings enables added/reduced wifi channels as per country wifi legislation, do you think they would bother with changes in hardware. If so it would be with different model versions etc right??

      • No, from what I can see, you lose some channels. Doesn't matter what you change the country setting to. (Asus can restrict things in the bootloader, without needing different hardware.)

        Have a read through: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2660120

        • Would a restriction on the channel choice only be an issue if you had congestion on the other channels?

  • Merlin all the way. Just ordered one… $207 for me.

Are there any good vdsl modem router with viop like this one?

  • Just updating on Paypal, got a reply from Joybuy:

    Dear customer,

Thank you for shopping at JD

Yes, we received many similar feedback about the PayPal wrong address. There might be some system error about the webpage.

She confirmed my address, which was correct.

  • Nobody asked import tax now? Heard about 10%gst + 15bucks of access fee.

    • What $15 access fee?

      • Heard about extra $15 will be charged by customs as a service fee.

Thanks OP. Just got one for AUD201.59 with my bank west platinum card. Now, have to configure it with my current Huawei HG630a modem with ISP Fuzenet. Any suggestions?

    • But late I know, but your Huawei needs to be in bridge mode. It will act as a modem only and your new Asus will connect from the Asus WAN (internet) port to the Huawei LAN port. It you're on ADSL you'll input your ISP login details on the Asus router. If your on NBN you shouldn't need anything.

  • Nearly pulled the trigger but reviews for this website look crap. Plus my ac68u is going perfectly fine even with WiFi streaming of big 4K files.

    • I bought a xiaomi lamp from them a few months ago, and I received it without issue

    • Only 13 reviews… Usually reviews come from people who have something bad to say… Hopefully won't be the case… ;)

  • Its better to get a DSL version since that has a inbuilt NBN modem.

    • I'd say that we should have a good router that we can just connect to whatever modem we get from the cable/TV/ADSL/fiber company. I'm collecting modems here, but the router is the one really doing the job (sharing the internet, wireless or wired). The modem is usually provided for free, and with technology changing all the time I don't recommend buying a combo modem+router.

I've switched from amazing fiber (TPG) to reasonable ADSL (TPG) to very good cable (Optus) back to terrible ADSL (Optus) and to amazing cable (Telstra). Will probably be forced to migrate to NBN soon… I want to bring my router with me when that happens.

  • What sort of VPN speeds can I expect?

  • Showing as $172 AUD for me

    • where did you get $172?

  • Hi everyone, I am not really tech person, so I will need your help. I just bought Surf Shark subscription and wanted to ask you all if I can use it on this router? Thanks in advance!

  • expired, price now US$220

    • Damn well that makes my decision easier

What about the ASUS RT-AC87U Amazon for $184.70 delivered - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/offer-listing/B07DN7ZT3Q/

  • Why are you guys/girls buying this router? What is your purpose ? I have the general Telstra gateway and everything seems to be fine, VPN, gaming, steaming, 6 devices connected 5GHz & 2.4GHz. Sometimes (once a month) I need to reboot it because it seems to bog down from heavy use (like its cache doesn't clear) but I'm just wondering what people are demanding these "special" modems for.

    Thanks ozbg

    • I'd use it as a dedicated hardware VPN for all devices on my network

      • Thanks for the reply jj. I guess if u push all your traffic thru a VPN I can see the benefit. As well as more Wi-Fi channels

  • It's back but showing 201 AUD without GST

Same for me, showing US$160.27 including tax, which is about AU$217.

Would this have a US power cable?

    • It should come with a worldwide voltage power supply. The power plug slides off the power brick and you put the new region plug on that you want. Comes with four plugs I believe.

  • I am thinking to get new router. I use Surf Shark for my laptop. Is is possible to configure this router and use one VPN on all my devices at the same time? Thanks in advance!

  • Anyone actually received their's yet?

    • +1

Yeah I got mine on Monday, packaging was pretty beat up but inside box was ok. Had to navigate the quick start in Chinese before I could change the language to English. It uses a US style 2 straight prong plug. I think the Wifi channels are restricted to those in China even though you can change the country setting as per https://www.snbforums.com/threads/asus-rt-ac86u-dual-band-ac…

Amazed at the strength of the wifi though, it's at least double my ancient wifi router
