Buy the Xiaomi A2 Lite instead

    • +5

      Why

      • Part of the Android One program, which means it runs stock Android with no skins / bloatware and (should) be updated faster / longer.

Almost exactly the same specs / price (though I hate the notch)

        • +5

Although it uses the sd625 in comparison to the sd636 in this. The Redmi note series also has a huge community following meaning support is likely to be available for a long period, comparable to the A2 Lite.

        • @NFC: This is true, but you can't compare support from the community (e.g. XDA) to official support.

Purely from a support point of view, the A2 Lite is definitely better.

      • +3

        A2 Lite advantages:
        Stock Android
        2% more usable surface

        RN5 advantages:
        30% more powerful processor
        better camera
wifi AC and newer bluetooth standard
        $40 cheaper

        • Doesn't the Redmi Note 3 perform better than these phones? It's an older phone, yet has a faster processor. Can't find a compelling reason to upgrade.

        • A2 Lite is ~$252 at https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NEW-XIAOMI-MI-A2-LITE-4GB-… . Didn't realise the Lite was using the older chipset.

        • +2

          @flaminglemon:

RN3 is 4g-2g which now makes it a single SIM phone.

        • @Merlict:
wow. way cheaper than geekbuying and gearbest

        • +2

@flaminglemon: No, SD 650 is not stronger than SD 636. SD 630 and 636 run circle around 650 (Yes, it's strange) while being much better power efficient. What the SD 650 has is slightly better GPU.

          SD 625 < SD 650 < SD 652 < SD 653 < SD 630 < SD 636 < SD 660

GPU wise the SD 650-653 has Adreno 510 while SD 630 and 636 has 509, so slightly better GPU. The SD 660 has Adreno 512 so it's better in EVERY aspects.

Reason why is SD 630 and above uses Kryo core while SD 653 and below still use Cortex Core (older architecture).

        • Does the A2 (not Lite) have a better camera than these? I want an upgrade from the 4X…

        • @Merlict:
          + GST i assume.

        • +1

          @flaminglemon:

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 has a more efficient processor and it only performs slightly worse in GPU but better in CPU iirc.

        • @HaveANiceDay: That would explain the differences in benchmark results. Some are higher for the RN3, some are higher for the RN5.

Smaller batteries also worry me, but I guess more efficient processors mean it doesn't need as big a battery.

        • @flaminglemon:

more efficient processors mean it doesn't need as big a battery.

Never buying into this. The processor is more efficient. Great. Now give us a bigger battery so it lasts even longer.

        • @xoom: That's when they start selling you portable batteries.

        • @xoom: As long as they last a day with around 5-6 hours SOT they should be decent. I don't know but spending 5-6 hours a day looking at phone screen is probably already high usage.

        • @Bigboomboom: if i can have phone with an even longer stand by time. Why not right? Its not always about the SOT.

  • I got mine from GearVita 2 weeks ago for the iPhone SE replacement. RN5 is a great phone. Current deal is even cheaper. The only thing I don't like is the missing of the NFC - No Android pay…

    • hoiw much time it took to receive the phone? and where?

      • It was really fast delivery - about a week if I remember correctly

      • I'm in Perth, WA

  • Anyone used these guys before? Normally use gearbest but don't wanna wait 4 weeks again.

    • They are much faster than gearbest. My RN5 arrived in around a week after order. I have some order with joybuy from June and all of them are still not delivered.

No Coupon needed. Cheaper US$180 at AliExpress.

Gold Version is US $179 delivered with fast DHL shipping.

    • +1

      GST?

  • Thanks. Ordered One.

    • From Gearvita or AliExpress?

  • Why there are 2 cameras?

  • +1

Bought same phone from GearVita last month, received it within three weeks. The Redmi Note 5 is the best one that I never ever had.

  • Wouldn't an LG V20 h910/h918 be a better proposition for a lot of people (around $275 on eBay)?

    • SD820 processor
    • higher res and more accurate screen
    • best in class audio w headphone jack
    • not lacking flagship features like NFC
    • better cameras and camera software
    • US MIL-STD-810G shock resistance certification

It probably won't see Android P but there is a smallish dev community on XDA.

  • Ordered on 2 AUG 2018 Delivered on 10 Aug 2018. I am very surprised.
