  • any 1tb variants

nice deal as i was just about to buy a oscoo 480 from Zapals ($73usd)

any luck on the tronsmart titan deal Clear?

    • No 1TB variants unfortunately. Ramsta only offer those in their PCIe drives and Geek currently don't stock them.

Titan is still too low in stock.

      • omg pcie variant

work ur magic Clear, make it happen! (depending on price lol)

        • I think the deal was just $1 off … it's at a good price … you know you want it 🙂

  • +1

This is an amazing price, 400+GB for under $100?

    • +3

1tb pcie variant but geek just don’t stock it …..this could be a game changer if geek or somebody does stock it and does a deal.

    • -6

      No.

Kingston 480 GB was $9x dollars few weeks ago. So I'm spoilt by those deals.

    • -1

it says this is the 3D version, doesn't mention 48 or 64 layer.

  • +12

This brand seems to be from a tiny new chinese company HQ'd in an apartment in HK, unknown reliability, might not even be around in a few years.

Don't see the value when a Kingston 480GB is only about $10 more on ebay, even less during the regular ebay sales.

      • +6

Facebook and apple have had $2 companies HQd out of a mailbox in tax havens too

        No they didn't

        2) unknown reliability - As previous deals showed, (and as every tech person will tell u) the flash memory comes out of the same factory as the big brands

Tjats nice , plenty of things come out of the same factory, but don't have the same quality.

        4) brands dont mean jackshit in terms of reliability
        5) kingston is crap anyway
        6) lol

Lol indeed. Interesting rant, but that's all it is.

        • +7

these are cheap cause theyre grey stock priced for overseas market. but not cheap cause of dubious quality necessarily
Ppl need to understand you cant view tech based on anecdotal feels. cause once emerging markets catch up on tech. ppl mistake affordability with dubious quality.
Your daily beater hyundai still probably has better and more reliable features than a 100 year old car

like how ppl used to shit on chinese smartphones until they realised anyone can start a smartphone company and Xiaomi/meizu etc actually make competitive products. but took a while for domestic asian brands to lose the stigma

Kingston on the other hand are cheap even for local stock for a reason

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5868306/redir - ramsta - parent company founded by chinese in 1992
kingston - founded by 2 chinese americans only 5 years earlier

so much for relevance of brand

@furythree: Here's the funny part that most OzBargainers wouldn't be aware of. Kingston SSDs are a lottery in what flash manufacturer has been used inside their SSD just like most other Chinese budget brands. Kingston will go for whoever is cheapest.

Like PNY, Kingston have been busted for the ol' bait and switch. Use expensive high end flash in SSDs for reviewers then switch out for cheap unreliable flash once the good reviews are out.

        • +2

          @Clear:

And I’ll always remember ASUS for doing that on the Zenbook years ago. Swapped out for a slower SanDisk SSD after the reviews were out.

        • +2

@Clear: Very true, here's the link:
SSD shadiness: Kingston and PNY caught bait-and-switching cheaper components after good reviews

AU warranty is worth something, I have had an SSD die that was promptly replaced by Toshiba - sent a new one out and a return satchel for the dud. Admittedly only had a single SSD die but they can die out of several and it is worth something to have local support. Didn't care about data loss as everything was backed up anyway but appreciated the speedy turnaround.

        • toshiba =/= kingston

        • -4

It is not worth losing money on every SSD (or almost any low value item for that matter) purchase you make in order to be covered by warranty.

Buying cheaper overseas and then replacing as needed if and when it needs it results in losing less money.

        • Definitely. A few years ago I had 2 SSDs fail within the first year. Was really great that I could just get them warrantied locally.

        • +1

@Sxio: key phrase "a few years ago"

      • ok buddy…I don't agree with any of those points but cbf replying to them because they're so ridicules lol…

I'm happy with my $93 480GB Kingston, I just wanted to point out these unknown Chinese SSD are not much of a bargain when regular mainstream brand with local stock are about the same price and still dropping.

        • -2

theres a reason your regular mainstream brand is cheap. u get what you pay for

kingston is mainstream, reputable is a stretch

these chinese SSDs are just unknown to you, and are cheap cause of greymarket pricing not necessarily reflective of quality.

      • no, you are data

This brand seems to be from a tiny new chinese company HQ'd in an apartment in HK

That's completely wrong and I'm curious what your source is.

Ramsta is a subsidiary of Newlystar Technology who were founded in late 90s. Sister brands include Tigo and Kimtigo. Ramsta were originally their power bank arm but switched to memory several years ago. All 3 brands are now known for their budget SSDs and RAM.

        香港九龙旺角钵兰街280号9楼903室

Looks like an apartment to me. Bld 9 room 903. Maybe one of those little apartment offices..
If this is wrong, you know their real address?

Also it looks like they only have one cust. service guy, whose name is Terry. LOL.

Maybe they are a secret subsidiary of some other company, but either way, this brand/company is not well known at all even on the chinese web. Very little review/discussion of this brand. Not popular at all on the major shopping sites in china. The chinese likes/buys the same ssd brands as everyone else, samsungs, kingstons, sandisks intel, ect.

These ramstas and many many other homegrown brands are considered cheap low quality products even in china, sure, they might work ok, but even from the previous posts of these on here, the quality of these seems to be hit or miss, and who knows about any warranty support.
This price maybe 6-12 month ago, i cross my fingers and take a punt, but not anymore…

        Funny logo tho… ramsta..red fist…lol

        • +2

          youre missing the point

          Whos the parent company?

        • +1

@furythree: It's clear he didn't read what either of us had said. We both provided the evidence of who their parent company is and their size.

        • @furythree: Out of curiosity if the child company goes bankrupt, is the parent company accountable?
Or are do all warranty claims become void?

        • @Ausbob: warranty claims should be with the merchant anyway

but parent company is not liable. thats why companies use subsidiaries to begin with

    • edit: found it - $110 + penny5

  • Have you got a link to the Kingston please

    • +9

Just search for Kingston A400 on ebay, there are quite a few sellers. 480GB's are about ~$108 delivered with PENNY5, I got one at the last sale for $93. All local stock too.
SSD's are getting cheaper, even mainstream reputable brands. no point getting these unknown Chinese brands ones from overseas.

      • Plus the Kingston ssd looks nice in one of those external cases

      • How do these compare to the equivalent SanDisk model? Like this for example

    • $113 on ebay, can use a 5% off coupon with PENNY5.

  • Thanks mding for the info

  • Ramsta reminds me of Bobsta aka Wanksta

  • SO. is this a good deal or not?

    • +1

I ordered from the last deal (older model) and this is my first SSD and very happy with the price, speed and improvement over my older hdd. As mentioned above though you can get WD or other brands for $10-$20 more.

      • -1

I'd trust ramsta over a WD any day.

        • Do you know why?

  • -1

Lame, purchased the last deal and now its a cheaper model.

  • Is it on sale until the 2nd of September or until stocks run out?

I'd like to hold off on buying it until the end of August but if it will go off sale before then..

    • On sale until the 2nd unless the quantity assigned to this coupon runs out first. I believe there are 100 units allocated, but there are more coupons out there for this SSD.

  • Bought one for photos and video backups. Can anyone recommend a USB 3.0 case?

    • Probably need to wait on one of these cases to go on sale. It's about time another one does.

  • how do these perform as cache driver for hdd?

    • If you're going to use Intel SRT for caching then it'll only be able to use a maximum of 64GB for caching the HDD. Even then the performance increase is tiny compared to having the SSD as a data drive. I use my Ramsta to store some of my more demanding Steam games.

Intel Optane is the more appropriate and faster way of caching. O

  • @Clear - Bought and paid for this 3 days ago but still processing. Any idea how long it will take to be sent out? #4662319

    • Takes 3-7 days for orders to be shipped out.

      • @Clear do you send out shipping notifications? I ordered mine 02/08 and still haven't received any shipping confirmation.

  • +1

Did anybody who got this try benchmarking it and get close to the advertised max of :

    Sequential Read: Max. 562MB/s
    Sequential Write: Max. 468MB/s

I only managed to get around 330MB/s for both. Not complaining though - still much faster than the old HDD.

Also noticed that the serial number on the box and sticker on the drive is different from that reported by the system.

On the box it starts with RL while the one reported by the system starts with RK. Anyone with similar findings?
