[Refurbished] Nintendo Wii U Premium Console $118.40, Basic Console $102.40 C&C or $6.95 Delivery @ EB Games eBay

1830
PRELOVED20

This is a great console for playing the pre-Switch library of Nintendo Games as it is pretty easy to softmod and has HDMI output for ease of use compared to the Wii. Looks to be a historical low for the preowned version from EB and comes with a 12 Month Guarantee.

Premium version [32gb internal memory]
Basic version [8G internal memory] SOLD OUT

Original 20% off PRELOVED code post

I would recommend Click and Collect if you can - The first one they gave me looked pretty rough, but they had three others in stock so let me pick another one that is in near-mint condition.

    • Keep the old Wii and then you don't have to worry about vWii limitations.

      • What vWii limitations? The convenience of a HDMI port and not having to pay out the ears for an official component cable to get clean extended definition signal out of it?

      • I'd also like to know what limitations you are talking about?

    • To be honest. I think the past couple of consoles and handhelds I bought were for modding experience rather than playing actual games on them.

I want to know how the hackers do it and try it myself. I guess you can call that "gaming". But an expensive exercise.

The original Wii will always have a place in my heart and I wouldn't replace it

      • There's a lot of info on Youtube by the original hackers that you can watch without doing anything illegal or spending any money. You won't get the satisfaction of doing it yourself but if all you want is to know how it's done it's quite satisfying. It does require that you understand low level programming though, which is a tough ask for most.

  • +1

I think the recent Wii for $28 is better value for casual gaming.

    • +1

If you don't want to play any of the Wii U games, the Wii is a solid console for modding and $28 is a steal

      • +2

Why not both? Get the 8gb Wii U + Wii (for the wiimote, nunchuck, sensor bar plus a good looking door stop).

        • +1

But no time to play :) There are so many good games on the Wii already you will probably never have time to finish them. And the Switch console will be much cheaper and completely hacked by the time you finish all the Wii/GameCube games you want to play.

        • +1

          @ttkc:
          This.
I recently pulled my old GC out to finish all those games I never got around to.

Same here, softmod my old Wii when I saw the $28 deal last year but can't even finish one game XD

Once you hit your late 30s and/or have kids it's game over ;-)

        • @syousef:

          I can relate

  • Can we mod regardless of the Wii u firmware?

    • +2

Yep, 5.5.2 is the latest, been out for a year, and totally moddable. Requires an $8 purchase of a virtual DS game to hack, though

      • +1

        If you're lucky.. Its free

        • I just realised what you mean by lucky is if the wiiU already got a virtual DS game instaled :D

      • I thought that's only if you want to include DS emulator function on it. You can do without

        • You can do without but less reliable. Easier to just buy something.

        • no, that's not the reason. It's you create a shortcut to haxchi, rather than having to load the browser and run a webkit exploit every time you want to load homebrew.

Trust me, it's worth it. There's a reason "brain age training"is the best selling ds game in the store lol

      • Dr Kawashimas Brain training was free (listed as already purchased although I never did) on the e-store for me and worked with haxchi.

        • +1

That just means the previous owner had already bought that game before from the eshop. The eshop is directly linked to the console so any games that a previous owner has bought you can now get for free (you were lucky and they saved you $10 from buying the game yourself).

        • +1

Yeah same. Is there a way to fix d out what has been purchased under the pre owned console?

      • Risky. If you ever forget, and reformat your wiiu, I've read your boot loader points to a non-existent DS game and therefore doesn't boot/is bricked.

    • +1

If you’re on 5.5.1 or lower you can mod it reliably for
      Free

  • +3

So I don’t need this. The question is do I get it anyway

    • +3

Usually, buy first ask questions later.

  • +2

Great timing - got one for my daughter's birthday. Looking forward to moding it too.

  • If I get the basic do I still need to buy
    Wii remote
    Sensor bar
    Nunchucks

    In the future?

    • If you want to play Wii games then yes you do. Sport games likes sports connection you do also.

For everything else that matters (Mario, mari9 kart, Zelda, donkey Kong) the gamepad is all you need provided you're happy with approx 2 hour play sessions or play tethered to charger.

      • Or you can softmod and use an old xbox360 or ps3 controller

  • Thanks! Purchased a Premium, I've been holding out for something like this to get through the Zelda series from 64 right through.. With the softmod I've done the original Xbox and Wii before so comfortable with that however do you know if you can use the original SNES and N64 pads (or USB versions of) on this with the emu? Or does everyone just use the Pro? Thanks again.

  • Picked up my premium. It was a Mario Kart one so it was already preinstalled!

  • Worth it purely for Mario Maker.

  • just picked up from the store, it came with sensor bar as well.
trying to soft mod it now.

can i actually play emulators without the need of the main console to be turned on? or that's impossible?

    • +1

      Premium comes with sensor bar

    • +1

No. Console is what runs it. The game pad is really just a screen

    • This was actually one of the major downsides to the WiiU and what they fixed in the Switch - the console needs to be on and the game pad within very close proximity (4-5m) to work.

  • Got one, thanks!

  • Just got notification for pickup… Picking it up tomorrow thanks.

I only bought this for 1 game.
I'll check up modding and what game this console actually have later.

  • Showing for 130 for premium. Not the 118. Any ideas? Promo code doesn't work either.

  • Already have an original softmodded Wii console which can basically play all the original Wii, GameCube, Virtual Console and WiiWare game backups. I'm still undecided if I really need to upgrade to this. Or just save some money and get the basic one? How much better do original Wii games using component cable look on the Wii U?

    • +1

Not as much better as you'd like.

AFAIK the Wii can only output to 480p (could be wrong, but it's definitely sub-720) and when the Wii U boots into vWii mode it emulates it EXACTLY, meaning it does the same output and everything too. So the image is a bit cleaner due to the HDMI and whatnot but tbh, it's not that much better nine times out of ten.

    • Same here. I actually have a hard mod Wii with soft mod on top.

      I remember I paid $600 for Wii back in 2007. Now it's $28 lol

    • Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Land 3D, Donkey Kong Country Freeze plus more as well as playing with the game pad - worth the small price this is going for if you soft mod and source games for free. Trying to play these on a Switch will set you back around $400.

      • Add pikmin 3 to that list

  • Whats the difference between the Basic and the premium model? Only the storage?

    • The colour and storage. New premium console also came with Nintendo Land game.

  • Wii U Basic already sold out and I doubt the Wii U premium will last much longer (172 sold in 24 hours).

  • Sadly got one and Mario Kart 8.. Wouldn't load

  • Got sucked in couldn't resist at this price. Bought one :D Thanks OP

  • Thanks for all the info guys. Got a premium hope it turns out alright condition. Are you allowed to check before pick up the one you want in store or do they allocate already?

    • You definitely are allowed to check, and can even swap for another if it's not too your liking. At least that's what I did today!

      • How do you do that? Just rock up and tell them if you can check another one before you leave the store? I just want to know what I should watch out for in the package if it's missing anything as it's pre owned.

Any missing sensor bar, cables what not I need to worry about?

        • Also check the buttons on the gamepad.

Did anybody get the GamePad charging cradle, GamePad stand or vertical console mount stand with the premium pack? I assume you also get both GamePad and console AC adapters.

        • @g12345567: doesn't come with the cradle, just sensor bar. That's what the ad said a couple months ago when I got mine during one of the other sale, do check though because mine had 2 loose screws (extras) inside so was rattling.

        • @g12345567: I got the charging cradle, sensor bar and cables with my premium

        • @zorrt:
Yeah same here mine came with all that and a replacement skin for it too. This was when it was I think 168 on special. Unfortunately for me they had about 6 or 7 consoles and all were in scuffed up condition but generally wasn't bad. It's pretty easy to mod buying the brain training game. Works well with everything after. But be careful during the modding stage as it's pretty easy to miss a step or two. Where as the wii is so easy these days.

        • @habib23q:

are you sure you need a game to mod it?

        • @pinkybrain: 5.5.2 firmware for modding will Be infinitely easier by buying a game.

5.5.1 and below you can use the browser exploit.

          Or so I’ve read

        • @flashi007:

          so any game will do?

also what is the exploit with the game disk method?

Yeah I seen some exploit which looks like it used the browser on youtube.

So you own the wii u and mod it already?

        • @pinkybrain: not just any game - certain ones. Some are cheaper than others. Look through this comment thread to see some links to guides.

The browser exploit was effectively closed in 5.5.2. Still possible but improbable to do with any consistency.

        • @flashi007:
Yeah all true. The cheapest game I found was the brain training one when I did it about a month and a half ago. But having haxchi load up from the console instead of going through the browser exploit everytime is infinitely better and more reliable too I found. I've finally gotten around to nodding he vWii too. Although I still have a modded Wii as well.

        • @habib23q:

          once you installed haxchi
do you still need to do more to mod the vWii?

so we still to update to 5.52
before you can do the haxchi mod?

        • @pinkybrain:
Yeah the vWii is a separate hack to install the homebrew channel and the add ons such as gx launcher etc. It's not a hard process tho takes a few more minutes. All the info you need is on YouTube. As for the haxchi mod I'm not too sure but I do know you could run mocha and other types of cfw on it before the 5.5.2 update. The haxchi mod that is installed thru the brain training ds game is just like a permanent channel on the main Wii U Page to run it like a normal app rather then loading the browser exploit every single time which is alot more cumbersome. Also you can use the wii maker channel to goto your games installed on the sd card without rebooting every single time.

  • I can play shooting games like house of the dead with this console I assume ?

    • +1

Don't think there are any Wii U shooting games, there Wii one but don't bother. I tried and found it rubbish on my Wii. Led TVs put an end to those light gun Game era.

  • +1

I cannot check out with the code.
Keeps saying - “this code can’t be applied to your order” :(

    • same here :(

      • So the code no longer works? dammit, waited to long :(

        • +1

I just tried the premium version and it let me apply the code at checkout, but haven't actually checked out.

I used capitals on the code if that makes a difference?

  • Does the basic version only come in white?

Just looking on Gumtree and am seeing ads for the Premium version but they are white but I thought the premium version was the black one?

    • Correct… never heard of a premium white coloured version.

      • There was a premium white model made that was exclusive to japan.

  • picked up mine yesteday, main unit scratched to hell but they gave a black sticker sheet to go over the top and it looks good now.. no charging cradle for the game pad or stand, just the bar.. Will mod this sucker soon, already have a modded wii gathering dust.. this will join it soon once the novelty wears off.. Thanks OZB..

    • As long as your get your $120 worth of value, then it is all worth it.

    • bought it on previous deal…like your case, main unit is badly scratched as if it was owned by Wolverine. Gamepad itself is in alright condition. Use the Wii U way more than my Switch.

      • So no scratches or dents on screen at all? There's got to be something scuff marks or tiny chip

        • no dents on screen.

        • @Anone:

mine has a few light scratches on gamepad and console. Couple of scratches on the screen but its all good.

        • @Circly:

Is it worth asking for a swap when you have some light scratches on screen or its expected?

I had a close look screen is not perfect but does look annoying on white background

        • @neonlight:

Depends for much it bothers you I guess. For pre owned at $120 I don't expect it to be in perfect condition

  • double post

  • Picked up the premium today the right hand screen has a small chip on screen, its usable but annoying to look on white screen.

Something like this you can exchange or it is what it is for preowned?

Everything else is there though, sensor bar charger for both handheld and unit. Probably not worth arguing because I might end up with a more worse unit. Same as above surface scratched to hell.

It's a preowned so you cna't expect much I suppose?

    • When they were selling for more you could walk into an EB Games store and ask to inspect it. I did that at a couple of stores and found a couple of consoles that were in relativley good condition but they're not perfect by any means.

      • Yeah so what do you suggest I have two chips on the right

        • +1

Call your local store and they will probably be happy to exchange it for another one?

        • Thanks I will try. I only got a problem with its gamepad rest is fine

        • Can't hurt to ask for an exchange. Bear in mind I paid double what you're paying so living with it isn't the worst option if it keeps working.

        • @syousef:
Yeah I tried calling a few stores they are all out of stock. I suppose minor screen problems I can live with.

  • okay picked up mine and found out the screen on the game pad got some scratch on it.

I wonder if I can just get back to the shop and ask for a swap?

    • Yeah I wonder as well but they are pretty much low on stock don't think they can do much as suggested per comment just above

      • I just called EB store this morning and asked them if I could swap the gamepad since mine got a pretty bad scratch on the screen.
At First the guy on the phone was explaining about how the system is a refurb so by no means it will be scratch free which I acknowledged however he advised that Im welcome to swap it at the store.

Went there and gave me my old gamepad and he went back to the store room and give me this near new shiny scratch free gamepad.

        • I was told the entire unit needs to swapped not just the gamepad, that is the whole package. Not sure how you swapped yours

        • +1

          @neonlight:
MMM thats weird, must be depend on the person on the store.
He did not even check my receipt, I mean I could be just a random guy with broken game pad.

I would suggest you try to call again tomorrow say like early morning and see if you could get someone different this time.

        • +1

Hey thanks for your encouragement and all other Ozbargainers…. I managed to swap to another gamepad, with a good screen.

You guys are legends lol 100% happy now!

For once I actually got good service from ebgames! Very surprised. I shall support their store more if they got good deals

  • n00b question, I just went to the eshop and when I'm about to look at all the games for sale on the "nintendo DS" section. It then showed that one of the game "Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training" showing as have been purchased on my account which is weird as I dont think I have purchased it.

Anyone know if this game is a freebie ?

Just want to make sure i have the legit copy as I'm following the instruction from the below url:
    https://wiiu.hacks.guide/get-started

    • Read all comments on this thread the answer of your question is there.

    • +2

That just means the previous owner had already bought that game before from the eshop. The eshop is directly linked to the console so any games that a previous owner has bought you can now get for free (you were lucky and they saved you $10 from buying the game yourself).
