Good price. Btw, you can get the new one (go pro hero?), and with some trickery flash it to be a GoPro 5 black too - although that won't let you have a mic input which can be important.

    • -2

Do you mean buy a 6 and flash it to be a 5?? Why?

        • Picked up a Hero 2018 this arvo to give this a crack.

        • @Tardvark: Sure enough, works fine, took a few minutes following this thread on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/goprohack/comments/8wpe49/gopro_her…). So far from my testing I have got…

A max res of 4K@30fps instead of a max of 1080p@60fps. Can also do 1080p@240fps instead of max of 1080p@60fps.
          Protune is available.
          Exposure control is available.
          GPS is enabled.

Seems to have worked fine. Crazy…it really is just a software gimped GoPro Hero 5 Black. And for warranty purpose apparently you can just roll back to the previous GoPro Hero 2018 firmware following the same process (have not tried).

All in all, $237 and 30 minutes for what is from what I can tell, a GoPro Hero 5 Black pretending to be another device, now restored to its previous glory :)

        • @Tardvark: where was the $237?

        • @Tardvark: couldn't edit my post. But was going to add that the cheapest I could find was $268 on Amazon.

Go Pro is gonna go bankrupt soon.

    Don't buy their shit

    • Any source?

        • +7

Does it really matter if they go bankrupt though? Its not like your camera suddenly stops performing its core function of filming right?

        • @Tardvark: then you’d have no reason to pay for minor updates

      • The karma was a complete dud and didn't help their bottom line. DJI absolutely buried them with the Mavic.

Their camera division is doing so well with all the knockoffs coming into the market although I think GoPro in this case have the superior product, unlike the karma drone.

    • Shares have been tanking for last two years according to Yahoo.

    • Doesn't matter if they go bankrupt if their stuff works offline anyway - and they still are the best at this price point.

      • +2

Until it breaks and you can't claim warranty.

Pretty sure you can get an extra 5% off on ebay.

      • I got 20% off on ebay recently and paid only $279.

  • Can anyone recommend an alternative to a GoPro for cheaper price? I'm lead to believe with the GoPro you are paying a premium for the brand name.

I will be heading to the Philippines in September on a scuba trip and would like a suitable camera to take underwater for photos/videos

    • Try YoPro

      • PoGro also a good option

@HerpinDerp: I feel for ya - was using that for years. Try a SloBlo from a MoFo til the FloGo.

    • Used to be gitup2 a couple years ago. Not sure what is better now a days.

    • The premium is worth it when the Gopro is on sale. The quality and usability of Gopro is far better than their competitors. I was quite skeptical before purchasing it, but now I am convinced it was worth the money. I paid $280 At TGG eBay deal.

      • Same. And it came with the stick. And $35 more off with TRS.

You are getting a better product with a gopro - mainly with software and likely greater support from third parties. Hardware wise you can find comparable products at a much lower price point (but the waterproofing without an external case is pretty nice though you will need one past 10m IIRC).

Consider the Firefly 8SE or the Mijia action cam at a lower price point. The firefly comes in 2 versions: 170 degree lens or 90 degree (distortion free) lens. The Mijia is in the middle at 145 degrees or so. However both of these will require a case for waterproofing. The Yi 4k is also an option but they are priced higher than the other 2. There is a Yi 4K+ which is priced even higher and is more of a hero 6 competitor.

Feel free to search for footage/images online, as well as vs gopro hero 5 comparisons for a better idea (there are too many) - here is one to get you started

    • I got the Xiaomi one. Didn't do a comprehensive comparison yet but for its price compared to hero 5 Black it is good.

I do feel that the software experience is better with the GoPro. And the Xiaomi froze the one time I connected it to my laptop :P

The quick video with stabilisation with 1080p was good with decent audio. And the 4k was good too.

The Baun action camera from Aldi is just as good and much, much cheaper.

    • Sony FDRX3000

      https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/actioncam/fdr-x3000-body…

Often has EFTPOS $100 rebate and is around 400 on eBay 20% off sales

      Or less

    • I'm using sp360 series from Kodak, pretty good quality but its really hard to find mounts that suits this camera because its different from gopro ones.
Most of selfie sticks, chest mounts, head mounts (this one comes with the camera actually), are designed for gopro so, not really ideal for Kodak's 3 bottom bolt parts.
Other than that, vid quality is better imo, more vivid.
Oh another downside, yellow sp360 can only hold 32gb sd card, whereas black sp360 can hold upto 128gb i think?

I would not pay more than $299 for a GoPro 5.

  • +2

Went through a handful of 'underwater' digital cameras before finally hitting on this GoPro.
It's better in every way, just a great product. They probably should've ended with the 5, not sure the 6 offers much?

    • +2

The 6 is much better but costs more - it's their first one using their own hardware chipset. Stabilization, 60fps 4k - both great upgrades.

  • What’s the difference between this and a $100 xiaomi action camera 4K

  • I would love to get another Gopro hero 5 black for 279 again with the 3 access handle Was a great deal from TGG

  • +1

Gopros are better than all of its competitors, especially for its value in price.

This guy does tons of comprehensive review for alternative action cams to Go Pros for fraction of the price. Seriously check them out you’ll be surprised how many good alternative ones are out there

    • Thanks for that, have been deciding for a while and zeroed in on the SJCAM SJ8 Pro (4K @ 60fps), purchasing it today on Ebay for $260 (including accessories).

      • Did you buy from an Aus retailer or from abroad. Appreciate if you could post me a link as I'm keen on getting one as well.

  • Black action das raycis!

  • Any gopro experts out there
    I have a Acer Predator G9 i7 GTX1070 16 gig ram 17" lappy
