Thanks for updating with Targeted - Im just getting free global wifi as my offer through Boingo.

    • yours is better

    • +4

      I'm getting both

      • Yes I got the WiFi offer a few weeks ago.

  • Interesting how many recent offers these guys have done.. especially since there's still not much in the way of competition (Bankwest Zero?)

    • +1

GE sold to latitude financial so change in ownership = different marketing strategy potentially (maybe they care about customers more, maybe its just a grab for more market share, not necessarily just with equivalent products, cause i certain still prefer using this card over regular cards for the insurance feature)

even a $5 price protection is worth more than whatever reward points i would get for an equivalent purchase

    • +16

Personally I feel the 28 Degrees has never been in a worse position.

It's not because it's a rubbish card or that it's got significantly worse, but I do think they have more competition now than ever.

      Examples:

      • ANZ Travel Adventures
      • Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard
      • Bankwest Zero Rewards Mastercard
      • Bankwest Zero Qantas Mastercard
      • ING Orange Everyday
      • Macquarie Transaction Account
      • CBA Platinum Card
      • CBA Diamond Card
      • Divipay (when they get back up and running?)

If you go back 5 years, none of these were really competitors or alternative options that waived foreign transaction fees back then. Now, all of these do.

Yes, there's the Citibank Plus - but that was always an alternative.

I may have missed one and let me know if I'm wrong..?

I never use mine locally. Can get QFF points or other rewards with other better card. So, other than using it overseas, I don’t get what u mean with not much competition. This card is never competitive in any way, except for overseas trip/international transactions

        • +6

          I never use mine locally.

I don't either, with the exception of when I get targeted with "Spend $400 get $20 back" type of promotions.

Can get QFF points or other rewards with other better card.

          Correct. See below.

So, other than using it overseas, I don’t get what u mean with not much competition.

I was replying to roadeh saying that there isn't much competition for this card. I was saying that there is competition for this card and I listed out the examples.

This card is never competitive in any way, except for overseas trip/international transactions

What I've bolded - this is exactly what this card was famous for. I guess it's still known as the travel card, but I'm pointing out that there are so many other alternatives now that it's no longer as attractive as it was when I got this card back in 2009 or 2010.

There is no single card in the market that earns you points without having an annual fee and waives foreign transaction fees. The closest you can come to achieving this is by using Divipay.

There is also, and still has not been, an AMEX card in Australia that waives foreign transaction fees. Wonder when/if we'll see that..

This card is never competitive in any way, except for overseas trip/international transactions

When used during overseas trips, sometimes it might not even work, and not possible to get hold of their customer support. I recently used it while overseas to make an AirAsia booking. It was rejected. Since it was after-hours Australian time, there was no way to contact customer support. Fortunately, I have the ING debit card to fall-back on.

Next day, when I spoke with customer support, it seemed my card was fine (not blocked). He said this had happened with other clients as well, purchasing through online merchants, but he could not provide a reason. So I am guessing maybe it was due to their server being down.

        • @illumination:
Actually before ANZ ditched their companion cards, the ANZ Travel Adventures AMEX had an amazing point earn without foreign transaction fees! RIP :(

        • @jsjc: Oh yes that's true I forgot that it had an AMEX with it!

        Just realised I missed one:

        • Coles Mastercard

and, what has gotten worse with the 28 Degrees Card:

        • Implementation of $0.95 BPay fee, incentivising us to use a somewhat annoying online "pay from bank account" system
        • Inability to withdraw money for free with 28 Degrees in surplus/credit, although I never considered this to be a huge disadvantage

Out of all these cards, the following are free Credit Cards:

        • 28 Degrees
        • Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard
        • DiviPay

And the following are the free Debit Cards/Transaction Accounts:

        • ING Orange Everyday
        • Macquarie Transaction Account

Also I wish to point out that the Bankwest Zero Mastercard is basically the better version of the 28 Degrees. It's also free, waives foreign transaction fees but also includes free Travel Insurance. Only disadvantage is a higher minimum credit limit requirement ($6k) which likely means higher income requirement, and means it takes up more of your total credit limit (that you can hold at any given time).

        • +3

Inability to withdraw money for free with 28 Degrees in surplus/credit, although I never considered this to be a huge disadvantage

+1, but nowadays you can use citibank plus for withdrawals and 28 degrees for purchases.

        • +2

          @mmd:

+1, but nowadays you can use citibank plus for withdrawals and 28 degrees for purchases.

Yep exactly. And the Citibank Plus has been around for ages, so I always used Citibank as my withdrawing card and 28 Degrees as my purchasing card back then anyway. Losing the ability to "withdraw" from a 28D for free was not an issue for me because of the Citibank Plus.

And then now you've got Macquarie/ING accounts as alternatives.

        • +1

@illumination: ING is very annoying with their minimum number of transactions per month though.

        • How's Bankwest Zero Mastercard travel insurance compares to other cards? Is it good enough to replace platinum card one?

        • @mmd: https://www1.citibank.com.au/banking/bank-accounts/citibank-…

Is this what I need to withdraw cash for free in Japan?

        • @miicah:
          Yes
Try and ask for the mastercard option if there is one. If u use 7/11 some ppl were getting charged as they have the ?old Citibank visa debit card https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/359796?page=1#comment

Having said that, there were heaps of Citibank ATMs in the major cities.

        • @miicah:

Yes, or ING or Macquarie. The Macquarie one is probably better than Citi in my opinion because of better app, better service, etc. The downside for Macquarie is that the waiver on international ATM withdrawals is a "special offer" but it's been like that for ages.

I still think the ING is the best if you meet the criteria though. Any ATM, anywhere in the world, without a second thought.

      • CBA cards (via the use of Amex) won't be an option come 1 November.

      • Thanks for the list; hadn't seen the non-Bankwest/ING ones, so will check them out

I guess my point about much competition is that no-one has really beaten it for its original purpose.. that is international transactions.. Personally I'm always dubious about trusting the travel insurance policy on cards for all but the most mundane trips (no 'high risk' activities such as diving/skiing, or areas where travel plans are likely to get cancelled or items stolen)

As mentioned, the lack of any kind of points incentive means I only used this card for overseas purchases (that have dropped markedly now with the new GST regulations), so I'm just using this card whilst I can get the 5% cashback on Samsung Pay offer, and for anything else they target me with.

        • Bankwest has a good app, much better service, and no BPAY fee. For me, 28 Degrees was beaten years ago as a basic international transactions card. Some of these new incentives are attractive though.

Received email today! Booked all flights last night :(

  • I got an email the other day from them saying "spend $400.. get $20 credit".. I rarely use mine anymore other than humble bundles as they really shot themselves in the foot with the whole bpay/direct debit fiasco.

Still, doesn't cost me anything and they send me free money so all good.

    • what was the fiasco about bpay

instead of using intrnet banking to do bpay, i just do a bank transfer….same amount of clicks

      • +1

but you have to pay from their website and you can't schedule it, so either you have to put a reminder to do it close to the due date or you end up paying early..or worse case you miss the date.

      • +1

the 'pay my account' won't let you overpay your account by much, it used to be any figure you put but now it has to be close to your account balance. Problem is that if you have lots of pending charges around those dates, you either have to BPAY + $0.95, or weigh up against the 0.5% cost. I had to Bpay earlier as I have about $800 in pending :[

        • Shouldn't matter in that pending transactions won't be on your statement which is the amount you have to pay (in full) to avoid interest. Am I wrong?

Edit: oh you mean if your card is full. Yeah I had a $1000 limit and it was a pain to pay off in time for the 5% off each month considering how slow their system is.

        • @spillmill: My understanding is that you have to pay off the full amount by your statement date to avoid paying interest and any shoppers protection insurance.

ie, if I have a balance of $500. and I have another $200 in pending, the amount available shows as '$1300 of $2000 available' of which I have to pay off $700 to get back to $0.

The problem was was that I couldn't pay off $700, only $500.. it won't let me overpay my account. It also means that even if I paid $500 into the account, my balance would never hit $0 so I'd never get any interest free days.

I dunno, I just think it's super sneaky of Latitude to play games with paying your account. It's deliberately confusing just so they can catch people and make them pay interest. I don't use my card anymore, other than for $20 amounts. I have a coles card which is effectively the same thing (except for overseas transactions) and at least they're upfront and I can overpay the account without having to worry.

          • @Vladdo: Why don't you stop using the card 5 days before the date so the pending payments clear and can be paid, or pay the 95 cents.

    • Mine was $700! But finally encouraged me to get off my butt and book my Europe accom.

      • And mine was $900 (to get $20 credit)- bastards! I still use the card quite regularly so that must be why…

  • +1

up to the value of $30.

    not much.

rather using my citi cc that comes with free travel insurance

    • That's $30 per transaction. What I'd like to know is how they determine what the fees are to be able to reimburse you?

  • Another one I didn’t get. Maybe I need to stop using this card.

    • I certainly get contact by the finance companies more often when my balance is $0 and I haven't used it in a few weeks.

    • I think that might actually be the key. I only use the card once a year for holidays, and maybe for the odd online international transaction. I get emailed most of the offers

I just got it. How do they know the booking fees, or is it just able to be derived?

  • +5

Depending on what other cards you hold, it may not be a good idea to forego the included travel insurance for $30.

  • On another note i've had some fraudulent transactions attempted in the last week to my 28 degrees card, 1 successful, 1 unsuccessful.

    • I've had zero over the many years using it overseas and online.

      • Anything in terms of security you are doing that I might not be doing?

    • Dispute that. They're quite happy to help. I got a call about fraudulent transactions while on the way to the airport for the holidays. They reversed over a thousand dollars in transactions and reissued a new card all while I was checking in. Good thing Mrs had hers still.

      • the dispute is in progress, will take up to 21 days. Card being replaced as we speak

    • +1

Make sure you follow them up.

Lodged a claim and didn't hear from them for 3 months, called up again and credited back within the week.

      • Thanks, i will definitely do that

  • +1

I've got the card but will not use this deal so if anyone wants to use my card then…. Wait a minute. Doooh!

  • I don't have this card, or any credit card for that matter, but this deal just emphasises the ridiculous booking fees of time gone by and the increased burden (at around twice the fee) that traditional credit card schemes impose on businesses when compared with debit card fees. Of course there's the argument that idiots spend more to acquire points, increasing spending as a whole and making stupid people poorer.

  • -4

Why do people buy into this manipulative crap? From an industry that made hay out of charging criminal transaction fees, they now know it's the worst? Couple the seriously pointless $30 rebate with an exclusive Ivite only offer and once again you are a chump.

  • +2

The reason they are doing these deals is to boost their turnover prior to attempting a float or sale of their business.

What I hate about using this card is how slow transactions are posted to the account. I think transactions used to be posted on a Friday or something. It was really slow.

I only use it when overseas or purchasing from overseas.
