Nest Cam Indoor Security Camera - $169 @ JB Hi-Fi

90

Courtesy of Price hipster

Tried Good Guys who have it at $279, but they can only bring it down to $169 as its the same parent company. Office works has the same price of $169 at their website now.

Other than the fact it requires a wired electrical connection, the specs and reviews look good.

  • gd price, i think it can be viewed on chrome cast also. so nice if u watching TV and then want to see video.
but will stick with Xiaomi once. Can't beat the $20 price

    • Where can I find the xiaomi one?

      • bought from gumtree. need to hack to ensure it works as there is regional lock

      • Found these didn't work for me.

i thought Nest is subscription based crap ?

    • +1

Subscription based if you want to record. My girlfriend just uses it to look at the cat

      • +1

Can't you just use a photo instead? :P

But seriously using a camera to look at something is so pointless.

Might as well get a cheap china camera for $30 to do it.

      • So you would say this is suitable for looking at (profanity)?

        • Weird that the alternate name for a cat is a profanity.

        • +1

          @F-22:
          Why would "feline" be profanity?

        • @kahn: very strange…

    • $70/year for a 5-day recording subscription

      • $77 with GST!

  • Doesn't seem to be much stock at Officeworks around me

    • You can do a click and collect order and if it's not in stock at the local store then they ship one up for you from the warehouse for you to collect at the store. There's no click and collect fee even in that case. It may take a few days for this to happen but you would get it.

      • Should be free next day delivery for orders over $55 anyway right?

  • +2

Too bad about the expensive monthly fees for cloud recording..

  • wondering how this fares as a baby monitor. does anyone know if you can cover the green light on the front and the night vision etc. will still work?

    • +1

green led is just for status. block it if you want.
night vision leds are in a ring around, (see the photo halfway down - https://nest.com/ca/blog/2015/06/17/say-hello-to-nest-cam/ )
However, from my experience, babies don't really care about lights in their room.

    • I've got the original one before it became Nest and it's a great camera.

You can definitely use it as a baby monitor but it's probably not as convenient as having an always on viewer for the home. However, the ability to view from anywhere you've got net access makes it really good as a security cam and there's no real set up needed or port forwarding required like some cameras.

The green light should just be a status light. I've got it on mine and I just have it turned off in settings.

The only negative as some people have pointed out is their expensive cloud subscriptions if you want to record. I use it as a security cam when I travel and for what I need it for it's great.

  • Looks like there is a recording of the past 3-hours available online free of charge.

  • +3

What a great way to cripple an otherwise genuine product by adding a paid subscription platform for its primary function

    • It's Google owned so it's not like they want you offline.

  • +2

    Um. This product. Why??

    1. Indoor
    2. Free recording isn't great
    3. Expensive
    • Because it's got fancy pattern detection algorithms that run in the cloud and alert you to specific conditions.
it also supports integration with other things, like IFTT etc.

  • +1

Can you use anything else to record or do you have to subscribe to the cloud

    • you can save clips to your phone / computer (motion detection/person etc).

you get 1 month trial with it.

after that $70 a year (not that expensive)

  • +1

Picked one of these up today. Very happy with it. I noticed that one month Nest aware 30 day subscription trial is included. After that it's $70 a year for 5 day cloud. Not that pricey If you think about it. And shits over the Xiamoi cameras

    • Its very pricey when you consider that 5 days is not that good.

      • How is it pricey? 5 day cloud (5days is always stored from my understanding)…

        • Its just not very long and you are paying for it.

    • Netgear charges me $13 a month so yeah, this is cheap considering!
