  • I got an echo dot for free when I signed up for Budget Direct and absolutely love it now.

The voice recognition on these things are pretty great and starting to make the house voice activated (turning on the tv, lamps etc).

    Highly recommended.

it can also quietly listen to what you say, it needs cloud for voice recognition, who knows where your conversations went…

      • Surely this is caveat emptor, and not needed to be said on every thread for Echo et al…

The echoes only listen for the Alexa code word and don't send anything to the cloud until after it hears that trigger word. You can test this by turning off your WiFi router and saying "Alexa". It will light up to listen to what you say. But will fail to action anything without the cloud.

This isn't to say it's not being hacked and sending everything to the cloud, but then there are plenty of other microphones in the average household which may be doing the same thing (and would be a better target for hacking anyway). But that way lays tin hats.

        • Voice recognition is not 100%.
Siri is only supposed to respond to my voice saying 'hey siri', but maybe once or twice a year, she activates after matching a false positive sound "fingerprint" from something else.

The previous issue with Alexa recording background noise & speech in the house and sending a copy, it was a bug in the word-matching algorithms. It's highly likely there are more bugs.

I was paranoid about this. I've kept a good eye on my firewall which shows/logs everything going through. There's nothing particular strange going on other than when we prompt it to.

  • Error in tittle, no way echo spot is cheaper than the plus

    • Spot on, Echo is $119, echo spot is $179

      • I think the title was "tidied" by the mods, all good glad they do sometimes! I've just edited then to fix it.

I imported a Lenovo Google Smart Display from the US on eBay. That thing works beautifully in Australia, even uses the local accent. I'd recommend a Google smart display over an echo spot! Hopefully there's good deals on the Google smart displays and that they officially land in AUS soon.

    • There's the Amazon Show you can also grey import here, I've got one on it's way to me thanks to a seller on clasifieds here.

The Spot is really good for a bedroom like an alarm replacement. I haven't got it yet I can't justify even $179 for a "smart alarm" when currently a Echo Dot + my phone is fine. But like you're not comparing apples to apples with the Spot to Google's smart displays.

Last time they had Echo Plus on sale, managed to order 20 Philips hue bulbs for free, was supposed to be 1 but for some reason they let me add 20. Nevertheless, they all got delivered and are sitting in the garage lol

    • Wish I tried clicking more Hues :)

    • I noticed the same, but only got the one I was entitled to as I didn't feel right going for more.
I was going to buy some more at the time, I should have put it through a separate order as they were $10 less each than they are now.

    • I sent you a message

    • What? Noooo! Coloured bulbs or the plain white?

  • The Alexa's have poor reviews on Amazon's site regarding Australian usability/integration, when compared against the Google Home's. Anyone here with both able to comment?

    • I’ve used both, google is definitely better in regards to usability. But I stuck with Alexa cause of the drop in feature. Something google lacks, they tried with the broadcast feature but it’s simply not the same. Depends on what you want/expect from your smart speaker

      • Also with Alexa I can get it to turn my tv on and and off, change the channel. Couldn’t with the google home but it can bring up YouTube and do decent you tube searches whereas Alexa can’t, both have their pros and cons… just do your research. There no compete solution yet…

    • Have both, imported them when they were released years ago in the US. For Americans, there's heaps of functionality on Amazon cause it was first to hit the market and many devs jumped on board. In Australia the Google Home was released nearly 6 months before the Amazon devices so there's more functionality for Aussies on the Google Home. Amazon don't even yet have their fire tv or tablets available in Australia so they're woefully behind in terms of the broader voice ecosystem. Google voice is on your phone, hooks to chromecast, links to Sony Android TV's and plenty of other gear. Also there's no YouTube on Amazon's devices!

Definitely Google Home over Echo for Australians.

    • Alexa works with Sony Bravia Android TV, Sonos, Fitbit, AGL
Google works with Chromecast, Google Shopping List

Each one has benefits, I use both depending on what I want to do.

  • I bought the Echo Plus + Philip Hue White bundle at JB HIFI (price matched The Good Guys) for $144
