Bitdefender free. No popups and fast.

    • +1

      +1 for BitDefender.

Switched over from Avira as I got sick of the popups. Love the unintrusive nature of BD.

Is it bad that I haven't used an antivirus in years

    • Let me send you some compromised websites I know. You won't even see the difference.

Is it bad that I haven't used an antivirus in years

As long as your PCs are hardened and browser security attended to, it's probably the best solution.

AVs are too hit and miss to justify the system slowdown, no matter how fast the machine.

      • Wow you haven't met 80% of my customers RJK, who need to pay to spend hours of our time cleaning their device.

In fact keep spruiking that. Shout it from the rooftops within earshot of anyone living with 30k radius of my company. You're making me rich.

    • -1

You most likely do have virus and malware. If you are not experiencing any significant slow down or performance reduction, and if you don't particularly care if randoms have access to your computer and/or interfere with files stored on it (which maybe you dont care) then stay without antivirus .
Worst comes to worse, can almost always just do complete wipe of system and fresh install of windows (or whatever operating system you want) then it will be easily free from viruses/malware (for a while hopefully).
Main concern might be if you do any sort of online banking, and also if there are any files or photos which are not backed up (stored on another source) .
ie. If doing any sort of banking, someone can get into that… If any files or photos aren't backed up, someone could delete pics or more likely I guess photo files would become 'corrupted' by virus/malware.

I rely on windows defender and I do a scan of malwarebytes every now and then but never had an anti-virus like this in years. Everything checks out and I have no problems. I don't think malwarebytes counts as anti-virus so technically I've not had one in a while :P

      • I haven't used any antivirus software for a few months and my system is virus free. This has been confirmed my multiple malware scanners.

While I most certainly do not recommend that others do the same, if you keep Windows and vulnerable software updated and are not click happy, it has been my experience over many years, that it is extremely hard to get infected.

  • 6 months only

    Anything but AVG people.

  • How long is it for?

  • mine's 1 year

  • +2

    Damn just paid $69.99 yesterday.

  • +1

AVG used to be a memory hog. Is it any better now?

    • +1

AVG pretty much was a virus, same with Norton

      • Norton was 10 years ago. It's now one of the less resource hungry of the top 4 even LESS than the built in Windows Defender. 360 is bloated, but SECURITY is in fact highly rated by independent test labs:

        https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/windows-10…

Ready to see any links you have to the contrary, until then please ease on the FUD. You are absolutely correct in 2006-2008 it was an absolute DOG but it was completely rewritten 10 years ago. People have long memories.

Kaspersky for me but I've been told that Windows Defender is pretty good these days which is free.

    • -5

Who told you windows defender is pretty good? Stay with Kaspersky

      • +4

Yes comrade, Kaspersky is best for make your data safe from foreign invaders.

        • +2

lol. Yeah, go with an American owned company, their government is heaps more trustworthy.

    • Problem with windows defender is it does not block outgoing data connections. With a good AV, you get prompted whenever a suspicious app tries to "send" out data to the internet. Good AV apps can auto configure and allow "trusted" apps. Lots of stuff being seen on dark web today are people's stolen ids/data. Most who get infected are victims of 0 day stuff… For example it takes seconds to steal every Firefox saved password you've used if you don't have master password enabled (for encryption) and have the file transferred remotely, and have it completely bypass Defender. If you never download and execute ANYTHING (this includes pdf files, video files, etc), you should be fine, but if you regularly download/open files, Windows defender will not cut it.

  • +7

But Common Sense 2018 Edition is always free?

    • +3

Most of us don't use it all the time.
By the way do you have link ?

  • +7

Just in time to celebrate my 15 anniversary of using a pc with no antivirus program.

    • +3

Have you heard about that new internet thing?

  • I have a Mac so can’t get viruses.

    /s

    • +4

I run DOS, no way viruses can get pass root level.

  • +2

Paid anti-virus is kind of pointless nowdays for the home user. You would have to do something extremely stupid to download a virus

    • +13

      Sashagreybackdoortrojanlolz.avi.jpg.exe

      • +1

I keep trying to click your picture but it's not doing anything :'(

      • +3

I am knew to this Sasha Grey virus. Now it's taking up lots of disk space and my tissue supply is depleting… Terrible virus

      • Very appropriate that it's a back door trojan.

    • People can get infected simply by visiting a compromised website.

There are plenty of ways to mitigate these threats outside of an antivirus though.

    • People have been infected in the last year just by visiting legit sites like Forbes. The idea that you’ll only get infected if you’re doing something sketchy or stupid has never been true.

  • +2

This so-called anti virus mob ought to pay the suckers who use it. It is not worth the colloquially two bob.

  • I got less than 3 months? Like what!?

  • +2

    Free spyware. Bargain.

  • +2

How well does it detect and remove AVG?

    • As soon as you click on Install

  • +4

Strange how people still think MAC's can't get a Virus, proof that great marketing does work miracles !
It's like saying my car is pure perfect German engineering and I'll never have an accident.

    • +3

I recently helped a friend with malware on a mac it was crazy, 2 fake programs at bootup with browser hijacking galore happening, malwarebytes free sorted it out

  • +4

Yeah, I got it free last time, Don't download this junk, you've been warned.

    • Kept getting random bsod with this installed.

      • +1

        Its rubbish

      • Common problem raised more than 2 years ago and still not fixed unfortunately :(

  • +1

I find most antivirus programs used to absolutely murder system performance with the best being Symantec endpoint protection, but for the everyday user windows defender with a chrome based browser set up with ublock origin and a few other tools helping with the nasties, along with spybot free

  • Is AVG still a thing? I was told it was used as a replacement for Norton(when it comes preinstalled on computers) at one point, and if you had money, you could go one step further and go with Kaspersky and basically ignore all the other branded antivirus/malware software/suites………

    • +1

A lot of "I was told" in these comments just noticing.

      Wonder who these Gurus are?

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

      • IN my case, it was from a local computer shop.

        • If a PC had Norton on it, Norton would have come preinstalled as a trial. I haven't seen this in a long time a lot of the devices we sell (unfortunately) have McAfee on it.

Then when the trial ends, you can choose to:

1> subscribe it via the nag screen (never do this they charge like $90 when a prepaid product key is more like $24-$34)
2> Uninstall it and stick to the built in Windows Defender.
3> Uninstall it and install something else.

AVG was never a standard "replacement" for Norton or any others for that matter. It was simply a free anti-virus product much like Avira or Avast.

As for Kaspersky - actually a good choice but any of the top 4 are fine if you want a paid subscription. Just be careful where you get it I get upset when customers pay $70+ for anti virus when there are much cheaper ways to obtain a license.

I'm not sure what the local computer shop meant but I think they didn't communicate it properly.

        • @Ramrunner: Well, from a business perspective, you shouldn't be upset if they're paying full price for their anti-virus from your shop because it means your business will stay afloat a while longer…

Well that's what they said to me a few years back….now their store no longer exists here anymore…hah, I guess they went bankrupt….

        • @Zachary: Still floating after 21 years now and making enough profit to have me in my Alfa thank you very much for asking.

HHmm. Maybe I'm still afloat because I don't rip customers off with high pricing and try to give genuine honest advice?

Welcome to stop by any time Zachary, I'll have a beer with you.

        • +1

@Ramrunner: Are Alfa's that expensive and luxurious? I've only heard and driven a Romeo or whatever it was called in one of the Need For Speed games…I think it was Carbon…..was basically a tier 1 exotic car, so lowest tier available of the five you get, or was it three……? The car handles alright around corners, does best in a sprint race, but if drag or circuit with lots of corners, it loses out to say a 240sx which is a tuner class car which excels in cornering or a camero SS, a muscle class car which excels in acceleration which gets you out of the corner faster…

I thought that's how business run, rip off customers so that they get enough to stay afloat, look at Harvey Norman and EB Games they're still alive and their prices are usually RRP or higher to start with…….and of course do the rare sales here and there to entice customers back……

But I guess I have no first hand experience as I've not ran a business before so what do I know? Maybe it's different when you actually go into making your own business? I wouldn't mind starting up a business of my own, but wouldn't know where to start nor have the capital funds for it either…..and I don't want to borrow either, because the last time I borrowed money, it was really hard to pay it back…….

If you're anywhere in Perth, we could meet up and have a chat about random tech stuff, maybe even show us your store, I wouldn't mind visiting it….I just don't drink beer….

        • @Zachary: OK Zachary. I really have enjoyed our talk, but you're now basing your Alfa knowledge on driving a Romeo in Need for Speed, and saying how crap it was based on that. Now you're just trolling I'm afraid. The Alfa Romeo Giulia is actually Australia's #1 Drivers Car:

          https://www.motoring.com.au/abdc-2018-alfa-romeo-giulia-qv-1…
          http://autotalk.com.au/industry-news/carsales-declares-austr…

Sports car of the year in the UK

          https://www.researchgarage.co.uk/alfa-romeo/news/alfa-romeo-…

I'm not sure whether after seeing all your comments together you genuinely lack any knowledge of the issues you write about or just a troll.

If the former, everything I've written is based on fact. Feel free to provide links to disprove.

If the latter - sad I thought we got them all at the last culling. There are better ways to spend your time. I'm happy to respond if you genuinely want to discuss anything but any unfounded blurb to get a rise I will ignore.

Funny how initially you defended your post by saying you heard it from a now defunct local computer shop. And when I tried to explain what they may have meant you went straight for a little sarcastic dig at the way I earn a living. Is this really how you want to spend your time? It really is too precious for that mate, as I've learned recently the hard way. Trust me more important things in life than poking bears.

          All the best.

        • +1

@Ramrunner: NO I thought I was good, just the specs of the car detailing it makes it look crap….and that if I were to drive this against someone in say a Dodge Viper SRT10, I would obviously lose…..and the car is this one

          Damn a $144k car…..that's fairly rich…..

That guy asked where I heard it from, and I replied with where I heard it from…..if you want company names, look up Centurion Computers, that was my local store….oh my bad, they actually moved, and not closed…..they're now in Balcatta….so I guess they're not defunct after all! Hah!

All this was meant to be random chatter, nothing intentional if it meant something personal to you…..

Site looks dodgy as, need AVG now lol

  • AVG bought over by google to further spy your computer. forced to intall chrome eventhough clicked no.

  • Anyone elses computer freeze and shutdown during the install? tried twice and same thing both times.

    • +2

Yup , mine frozen 3 times , after restarting 3 times . Gave up and never tried again . Negative vote for the failed installation .

      • Could be incompatible with one of your installed programs.
