  • my experience with buying fragrance from CW has been bad. They sell old stock (2-3 yrs old) and the smell lasts for only 2-3 hours for any perfume..CW is selling it cheap for a reason..

    • +15

New release perfumes they sell must also be 2-3 years old. There's a reason some people's opinions are useless.

      • +2

this one was released in 2009..dismissing other opinions seems to be a national sport for some..

        • +7

Obviously this one isn't a new fragrance. But to say they sell old stock is misleading. They sell a lot of new stock and new releases.

        • @bonjovi: it was an opinion..not a fact..go and buy if you want to..

        • +7

@stockastics: you said for any perfume which implies all of them. Somehow chemist warehouse has access to perfume bottles 2-3 years ahead of release date.

    • +24

They sell old stock (2-3 yrs old)

I have seen this mentioned quite a few times in fragrance deals from CW. If anyone is concerned about the same thing, you can actually check the date of manufacture for your fragrance here. You can find the batch code at the bottom of most bottles.

Haven't had a problem with CW selling old stock, as most have been manufactured in the same year I had made the purchase. As for the strength, this really depends on the type of fragrance you are purchasing as manufacturers have been known for re-formulating fragrances over time which might affect the longevity.

    • +1

      Agreed.

But I still blind bought this because it's so cheap lol.

    • +2

      don't know about CW. but I don't use/finish perfume until after 3~5 years 🤣😂

    • +1

Agreed… I bought a bottle of Armani Code from both Myer and CW. The one from Myer smells stronger and lasts longer whereas the one from CW seems as if it's watered down. You get what you pay for I guess.

    • Some older batches of fragrances are actually preferred over the newer ones that have been reformulated with synthetics. For example, the older formulations of La Nuit by YSL (even the 2nd formulation > current one) or Dior Homme Intense perform better in terms of sillage/longevity with less of a synthetic base smell.

    • +2

You are spot on. I am a acqua di gio fan. First bottle was not that bad. 2nd bottle had chemical smell. Turned in to more chemical smell with in 2 years I had. Compared to Myer it is way more cheaper. Thanks @stuhub for the link. I checked the last bottle and it shows as manufactured in 2016 and good for another 7 months. So in that time line I have bought it with in months of it was manufactured. Either it is fake label or something has happened like exposed to heat etc. Definitely something wrong.

If you are in store and can get a hold of a box, punch the batch number into http://www.checkfresh.com/ and see how old it is.

    • Here are the results of a few date checks from what I've bought in the past week, as Father's Day gifts from my kids to me :)

      Boss Oct 17
Gucci can't find a batch number?
      Versace July 17
Dolce and Gabbana 2017 not happy!
      YSL June 2016

The general trend at least in my shopping seems to be, the more expensive the perfume, the slower moving and perhaps older the stock. The YSL was the most expensive @$100

  • +3

I have had the perfumes which have lasted me more than 5 years, I am not sure if the 2-3 year theory holds?
    https://www.instyle.com/news/fragrance-expiration-when-throw…

    • Probably depends a lot on the type and quality of ingredients.

  • +7

Wish they would put the original on at this price

  • +1

From what I have read, most perfumes now use synthetic ingredients and not real oils now, so there should be no degradation in the quality of the perfume over time, unlike in the past where the oils would go off, lose strength etc

    • Thanks for the suggest. I got the Burberry London. I like it.

  • +1

    Is this a good perfume
I've used l'eau d'Issey which is quite nice

  • Just FYI, I was in store just yesterday and the 75ml was still 19.99$ not sure if that has changed today.

  • +1

Most of cwh perfumes are years old sitting in a warehouse. There are a lot of perfumes in the back that are extremely dusty or we don't sell due to the box being pale from discolouration over time. You get what you pay for. Most still smell similar but definitely not the same.

    • +1

      Is this serious or troll???

      • +4

I assume the comment from the'Associated' poster to be alleged only, could be a disgruntled employee?

        • Not disgruntled lol. Just a warning that you get what you pay for. I have a few and use them myself but on the cheaper side like Davidoff, David Beckham, Calvin Klein etc

      • -1

Serious. Sorry if it seemed troll. Most do smell like the original they just might not be as strong or last as long.

        • +3

And if you go to Basenotes there are many complaints of scents that have been reformulated and don't have the same longevity/projection of originals. So worldwide issue, not just CWH.

Having said that though, there are just as many contradictions that a new and old version are same. Some get 3 hours of life while others might score 8 hours. Some people love a scent, others will loathe it.
          Opinions, gotta love em :)

    • -1

Maybe the case for stores not turning as much stock over, but definitely not the case for the busier stores

      • -1

Any way to check if stores have stock besides going from store to store?

        • +2

          Ring them.

  • +1

    Good find OP.

  • +1

    Nice…

  • +1

    nice one OP

    • +2

I'm a fan of the original and also the men's summer edition with their fruity smells. This 'intense' one is more of a musky/smokey smell. Not my fav but worth it for the price to spray once in a while.

      • Exactly my views! Have both. Still prefer the original.

  • genuine?

  • +3

Got my instore, checked made in July 2017

    • Same, got it from the George Street store

  • Oh man! Instore only, nil onlime stock.

  • +2

I buy from CWH, Myers and DJ. My only complaint with CWH is that they sell the same product at half the price.

  • +5

Chemist Warehouse fragrances are just as fresh as anywhere else, ONLY cheaper… i have been buying from them for a long time as well as from DJ / Myer and found no difference in Manufacture Date (Somtimes even the same batch) !
Buy from Chemist Warehouse without any doubt and I regard them highly to be the first company to end fragrance / healthcare rip off for Aussies…
I come from a Healthcare Supply background and can assure we supplied the same product to Chemist Warehouse as anywhere else… only difference is they pass on the savings to their customers whereas others rip off !

    • Believed. It still astounds me that so many shoppers pay little attention to price.

  • +4

CW may sell old stock, but just as likely as DJ’s or maybe Myer, as far as I can see.

The difference is more likely to be confirmation bias IMO. But, nobody should feel bad for falling victim to it (confirmation bias). Advertisers, retailers, promoters etc spend staggering money on psychological manipulation games to make people interpret their wares in a certain way. ‘Cheap’ stores do exactly the same thing and it works in reverse, I.E; ‘they tell me this store is cheaper than the rest, so by joe I’ll buy from there and snub the fat cats.’

Ever had off milk? I have and I still remember the yuck taste. If I have milk that’s just passed it’s used by date, I could swear to you it tastes distinctly different to the previous day, when it was still in date. Is there a difference? Maybe a slight, nearly imperceptible one, but my instinct brain correlates the use by date as meaning the milk is now gross (it tastes yuck), despite my logical brain telling me it’s probably nothing and it’s still perfectly drinkable.

This is why retailers spend so much money on shop fronts, on store displays, on product placement etc.

I’m not trying to suggest that folks who think their CW cologne ain’t no good are wrong (who knows), but just to remember that DJ’s or Myer or any other more expensive store are just as likely to do the same thing, but you just might not notice.

I still fall victim to confirmation bias and marketing even knowing about it, it’s human nature.

  • Got some, good deal! :)

  • +1

Purchased three CWH Cool Water Davidoff and chucked them. Lost their scent after half hour. NEVER AGAIN

    • I’ve got a bottle of cool water I bought 5 years ago from CWH and it still smells strong as the day I bought it and it last all day so maybe you just got a bad bottle or something

    • Yep same experience as yours on the Issey ones I purchased from this deal….see below…

  • +1

I just bought 3 bottles (online) and checked their batch its 29 November 2016

  • Mine are 2016 stock. Old stock.

  • Got the Fraiche version and not happy with longevity. Checked and its November 2015. Pissed off!

    • +1

Stale as. Last half an hour, not 8-10hrs as it should. I'm going to take this up with CW and see what their response is.

      • Keep us informed.

        • Will do….

According to Fragrantica ans other reviews and my other previous Issey purchases, they should have strong spillage and longevity which is clearly not the case.

          https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Issey-Miyake/L-Eau-d-Iss…

Furthermore this perfume was launched in 2015 and released on 2016, meaning this batch is from around the launched time. Even further to this, they were launched as 50ml and 75ml bottles so not sure what the go here is with 125ml bottles.

Now I understand why CW perfumes are cheaper….they are like Tempe Tyres…mixing old stock with not s oi old stock and passing it off to unsuspecting customers…

        • @spy: Interesting. Let us know how CW respond. Though I would have expected the Fraiche version to be lighter than others.

        • +1

@PJC: that it is, light as nothing.

        • @PJC: I've been asked to send them back for testing/assessment.

        • @spy: You may as well.

      • Are you comparing Fraiche to Fraiche and not EDP/EDT? Fraiche is the most diluted version of fragrance.
