ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U Slimline External USB2 CD/DVD DL R/W $39 pickup at Computer Alliance Brisbane

111

Hi guys, I picked up three of these last weekend and thought I'd better share the love :)

Computer Alliance is a 7day bricks'n'mortar business at Mount Gravatt Central on Brisbane's southside, about 15mins from the CBD.

They seem to have a flat $15 Australia-wide delivery fee.

BTW, the web-page shows the model as ASUS SDRW-08D1S, but it's definitely SDRW-08D2S-U.

I've read/burnt a few disks so far and all good.

I bought the other two drives for mates who jumped at them for the price.
They haven't come knocking on my door at night carrying burning crosses, so they seem happy with theirs also ;)

The horizontal or vertical stand thingy is neat and the "diamond-cut waffle-weave design" is uber-cool looking IMHO…. oooooohh, shiny things :) :)

Enjoy.

Make it so,
Jean-Luc.

I'd been wanting an ext/USB optical R/W drive for my little netbook for yonks, but they were always too dear, so I jumped when I saw this'un :)

      I figured that for $39 I couldn't go wrong.

I did a batch of, er,, disk umm,,, back-ups the other day on the wife's laptop and boy was it nicer having the two drives going at the same time for on-the-fly ahh,, replication. ;)

One of my favourite shops, i bought the 4GB and the 8GB USB when they were cheap and also the 500GB 2.5" HD for $79(note: this was a while back)
The only thing i don't like is they ask for your contact details during the transaction

computer alliance are pathetic when it comes to honouring warranties for the computer parts they sell!

    • so your reason of negging is based on the store, not on the product itself?

      • +1

        actually issh my sweet :P

        that is a legitimate reason.

it needs to be factored in if the supplier is bad at after sales service

even if the product is cheap .. and posted by an awesome ID (thats you mr picard)

        Valid negs.. are valid

mind you its way too far after valentines day to be fiesty!

        I blame work tommorow

Basically they built a computer that had such a low powered PSU in it the motherboard was struggling to keep up. The capacitors, bulged, then a couple failed, meaning the board was unusable without repairs. With the capacitors clearly faulty, I removed all cables to the motherboard. Took the computer in…they then said 'Someone has clearly been inside the computer, we won't honour the warranty'. Even with the failure clearly apparent! There is no way you could get capacitors to bulge without it being a faulty design/hardware issue, apparently this wasn't good enough for computer alliance and they STILL refused to repair the damage they caused by a computer they faultily designed (they selected ALL components in the machine) and built!

        • Was the warranty policy that opening the case voided it? If so, then you should have just taken it back without opening it, regardless of what diagnosis you felt like doing yourself. They are within their rights to turn you away if you did anything against their warranty policy.

If that wasn't the policy then they broke their own policy and you should have pointed this out to them and escalated it.

    • Domingo: It didn't matter what I did. I was back then highly experienced in computer hardware (got out of the game, people thought my charging $20 an hour with no call out was expensive…). No matter what I did there is no way that someone could 'blow' caps on purpose. It was so blatantly obvious that it was a hardware fault. Since it wasn't my computer I didn't really care. But I still think it was so shoddy of them to do it. I even told them that if they wanted me to come in to show my prowess, I would! They refused…

      • I'm not suggesting anything you did caused the caps to burst. I'm suggesting if there was a "warranty void if broken" seal on the case and you broke it, then the warranty would be void, regardless of other factors.

        • But I was able to prove that I was a highly experienced computer technician at the time. I could LOOK at a computer and diagnose it (this did amaze quite a few people). I just cannot understand why they would refuse to replace it (the BOARD would of cost them approximately $45) when the company involved had spent thousands of dollars at the store in the past two years! If I was some numbnut I could understand it…but I wasn't! Either way, I'm never shopping at computer alliance again!

Below: I have NO IDEA what their warranty 'policy' is, even if it was a policy that opening it would void warranty (there was NO tags on the box that would break upon opening) it is still VERY LOW of a company to use that to avoid repairing an otherwise valid claim!

You still haven't actually answered my initial question:

Was the warranty policy that opening the case voided it?

If so, then the store has every right to refuse the warranty as per their conditions. However, you would still qualify for a manufacturer warranty assuming none of their warranty requirements were broken (unlikely, as they sell a part designed to have other components connected to it.

          @bendertiger,

Seriously dude, this is a facepalm moment:

"But I was able to prove that I was a highly experienced computer technician at the time. I could LOOK at a computer and diagnose it (this did amaze quite a few people)"

Please, I don't mean to be…well, mean; but quit while you're ahead bro, this is getting embarrassing.

        • Stewballs, you obviously don't know the art of fine sarcasm do you…

  • thanks bender for the comment

I forgot to add I have no idea about the after sales service, but bender who negged obviously has an opinion and its far more considered than a lot of random negs (although I still stand by my ipod ones)

the "capacitor" thing sounds odd.. old school electronics I understand ..hmm

    • It was a 180w or so power supply…I did the sums, it should of had a 450w in it minimum! The board crapped out in 10 and a half months from the date of manufacture (of the computer). It would of only cost them $90 to replace the board and upgrade the PSU!

      • What about manufacturer's warranty on the mobo? That should have been at least as long as for the system??

How long ago was this, I haven't seen a PSU rated under 300w in literally years???

I'm with Natt, I can't really see the PSU causing the caps to bulge…other problems like instability & random reboots etc, yeah; but affecting the caps physically, not likely. I'd suspect a different concurrent problem…your board wasn't made by Epox by any chance was it?

        • Keep in mind this was back in the day when bad caps were in almost all manufacturer's boards, but the small PSU didn't help matters…I figured that since the computer's warranty hadn't expired it should of been taken care of by computer alliance.

        • +2

Keep in mind this was back in the day when bad caps were in almost all manufacturer’s boards

That's a sweeping statement. I've been around a long time dude, & I don't remember those days; I do however clearly recall a couple of notorious offenders for cheap caps, and a couple of isolated incidents on a couple of specific models of another brand boards! :p

Well, if you weren't getting any joy out of CA (despite possible entitlement), and you didn't wanna go the FT route; the next logical course of action would have been the mobo manuf…I've found them (indeed all parts manuf) to be very approachable on these kinds of matters where their components are in faulty systems! ;)

I do commend your ability to hold a grudge though, it sounds like this occurred quite some time ago!

I really beg to differ about that comment about their warranty. I bought two wd 2tb green hard disks from them last week. One failed and I took it back the next day. No questions asked I signed a form and I got a new one. Service with a smile as well. I highly recommend them.
