  • Is this USB/Ethernet hub good / worth buying?
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-Port-Volans-VL-HJ45-USB-3-0-wi…

  • +1
    • I bought dis and an acer x34p. epic savings.

  • Any recommendations for a good AM4 (Ryzen) motherboard?

Budget max. $200. I prefer ATX over Micro ATX if this means more slots etc.

      ^ This.

But, price has been jacked from usual $259 ish, so not a good deal.

this mobo has exceptionally good VRM vs same-tier competitors. I heard MSI bios lacks APU oc, but probably not a problem if you're using a dGPU anyway.

      • B450 is good too, but it has less PCIe lanes compared to the X370. This could translate to a slower M.2 slot, or shared PCIe lanes with SATA or the GPU depending on the board.

The X370 might be a better choice if a NVMe drive is on the want list.

    • I have a Crosshair VI Hero myself.

What I would get now is https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ASUS-AM4-ATX-ROG-STRIX-B450-F-GA… if you're looking at a six core or below. VRM isn't as good as the MSI that @xrailgun linked, but it's much better optimised and asus has a handle on Ryzen in terms of compatibility and performance that the others don't as much.

This board with all its BIOS optimisations outperforms even a crosshair VII hero (as tested by OC3D) and is a chart topper in nearly every category, assuming you aren't overloading the VRMs.

If you're running an 8 core, I would get a Crosshair VI hero instead. It has USB BIOS flashback so you don't need to worry about borrowing an old CPU to update the BIOS so its compatible, and it has a very good VRM and also very good performance. The Crosshair VII is a better board but it's way too overpriced at the moment so that's one to miss IMHO.

      • Agreed, a lot of companies have bios that bottleneck the hardware's capabilities, MSI may certainly be one of them but I can't say for sure.

I also have the CH6, and I know that Asus has real enthusiasts in their team doing software development (like Zen Suites) and OC guides for enthusiasts, but mostly only support Asus boards.

That said, 2nd gen Ryzen comes with the best auto-OC algorithms the industry has ever had on CPUs, the consensus is that for the average user who's not previously savvy to OCs, it's generally not worth the time to learn to manually do it. That takes away a lot of dependence on the bios side of things.

          https://overclock3d.net/gfx/articles/2018/07/28142447315l.jp…

I mean it's not a huge difference, but a performance gain is a performance gain, and I'd take an asus over an MSI any day of the week, even with a weaker VRM if I'm not trying to run a Ryzen 7.

Completely agree with you on the auto OC side of things that it's better to leave it as it is for 2nd gen, but the microcode that each of the manufacturers implement does make a difference.

I know the deal starts tomorrow, but why are some items ebay Plus, and many (small) items aren't. I get big items like cases and stuff not being included; but I just want a 5 pack of fans and it's saying $15 delivery when lots of bigger items are eBay Plus. Weird.

I guess it has to do with how much profit they're making per item?

    • +5

We can't worth that one out either, and have raised the issue. eBay have not been able to provide detail about how they decide to flag a item. It seems they are going through some revisions and that may explain why its all over the place at the moment.

We have a flat fee on all orders, so max eBayPlus contribute is the $15.

Initially it made some sense, I believe all our items above about $15 were flagged (which is very generous, I would have that number higher given freight is the full $15 unless you buy more than 1 item in a order)

Somehow its become very inconsistent that a widget at $30 is under the program, but one at $100 is not. It might make sense if for eg a widget is almost always bought with other items, lowering the relative freight cost, but some higher priced entries that miss out on eBayPlus are often sold with other gear, so that doesn't seem to be it.

It does seem all our popular and volume gear is in the program, so I would say it still applies to over 95% of of orders. For now, its just a irritation, still a good deal and free freight for nearly everyone.

      …Adam

      • +1

Thanks for the detail. I was unaware it was even eBay's discretion for what items are eligible. I thought that would be a "you" thing to flag. Very weird indeed.

I'll decide tomorrow if I'll get them or not, but man; if the $15 shipping didn't apply to me, as a Plus member; $140 odd for the 5 pack of Thermaltake Riing Plus 140mm fans would be a steal.

      • What GPU are you running?

Does it mean computer alliance is excluded from the eBay 10% off sitewide? You know jack right?

    • You can only use one or the other. The coupon field only takes 1 code.

    • +1

Well you got 20%… What more do you want…?

      • -8

Nah you don't know what does it mean. If 20% code is specially for Computer Alliance that means it will jack up its items by 20% as opposed to if only 10% eBay sitewide Computer Alliance would not jack the prices and we can truly enjoy 10% off. Now the 20% ruins the 10% code for Computer Alliance.

  • +1

I have found the RA policy of these guys not very good. I bought a nighthawk d7000, it started making high pitch noises and started locking up… they told me it's normal and this model router just has issues…. right :/

    • Just mention Australian consumer law, you will get a replacement or refund

    • I don't know the full story on this, so hard to comment, but will say if it had any clear fault we would swap out. Locking up, assuming its the router and not some other problem (eg wireless dropping out because of reception/location, modem dropping out because of a poor line from ISP etc) would be a fault. We would need to be able to verify a fault, so need a clear description on circumstances so we can replicate the issue. If its still playing up, shoot a email to [email protected] address or ring our service guys on 07 3421 3200 (hit 2) and ask for Kris.

  • Can anyone recommend me a case for a atx z370 build that will fit a noctua d15 and msi 1080ti gaming? Want good airflow, solid construction, many fans, no interest in RGB.

    • +1

I would have suggested the Fractal Design Meshify C but it looks like they removed it from the sale this time :/

I still recommend it due to its solid steel build, excellent airflow (comes with two fans. Can easily fit 6 in the case), easy to clean filters, and good cable management. Great overall design.

      Downsides:

      • You can't fit more than one HDD if you have a long PSU. I suggest anyone buying this case to buy a PSU with flat modular cables, instead of regular modular cables. You can fit three SSD's though, no problem.

      • Also, because your 1080ti is kinda long, you'll be limited in the size of AIO water cooler you could buy, but that's just me projecting my current dilemma with the case hahaha. GPU's shorter than 29cm are fine for most AIO's.

      • +1

They said they've got a Noctua D15, so there's no need for concern about AIO compatibility. A D15 or similar tower style heatsink cools just as well as any good AIO, and better than most cheap ones.

That all being said, I'll mirror your recommendation for the Meshify C even if it's not part of this deal. I built a PC for a friend several months ago and the Meshify C was a pleasure to work with. I've got an older case with wonky front audio ports (Cooler Master CM690 III) and I'm strongly considering just buying a Meshify C and using my current case to house some other parts I have laying around.

  • Can anyone recommend a tablet or 2 in 1 with a 8550u?

    • +1

That's a laptop cpu. Tablets and 2 in 1s normally come with weaker cpus with lower power draw.

By 2 in 1, I am assuming you mean with a detachable keyboard. If you mean the kind that can bend all the way back or run in tent mode but otherwise will not detach from the screen, then yes there are options. I don't really consider this to be true 2 in 1. It's a lousy tablet that's too big and too thick.

The most powerful 2 in 1 with detachable keyboard I think is the surface book, but it hasn't been updated for 8550u yet.

    • +3

Not sure what you are seeing there. Just checked my internal price change log and last changes across the range was on the 16th, some went up, some down, mainly minor changes. Our purchasing/marketing guys were adjusting some prices last night (mainly down) but i don't think they touched the CPUs except to limit sales on some SKUs to stop dealers buying them all out.

      ..Adam

      • Ryzen 2600 for example has increased from $245 to $259?

        • +3

Price changed on 16Aug, already half month ago.

          https://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemRevisionDet…

        • +2

err, no? The 2600 SKU was adjusted DOWN last night on eBay from $299 to $259 (think the only one changed last night - our purchasing guys did that because some new stock coming in at a better price). https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/-/173269751842

You may be looking at our main web site? We do have one there at $245, alongside the SKU at $259, but the cheaper one is only available for sale at the lower price when sold with other system components.

We do a discount in bundles n our main web site for a number of CPUs to add some incentive to buy all components from us. They don't go on eBay because eBay don't have a way for us to provide the discount only in bundles. e have been using bundles since before we even set up the eBay shop.

I do know one of the "sold with system parts only" SKUs was pushed up I think last night, thats when i found out about it and took it back down. Off hand can't remember which one but probably was that SKU —- I assume while the price was being reduced someone forgot to set the no eBay flag on the bundle version of the model in our internal system and it was pushed to eBay as a result. It went back off again before any sales were made against it, so if that was SKU, you were quick to see it!

          …Adam

        • +1

@superforever: 16th is correct for the last major change across the range, apart from that single one last night. We increased the price of that SKU on the 16th when our cost went up, and just so happens we did a deal on that model to get a better price just recently and adjusted it down again in time for this sale (would have normally have happened next week, but thought may as well pass on the drop change now, even for the higher costed CPUs still in stock - the new cheaper stock is hopefully in this afternoon). So basically opposite of what iLike believe happened - though I get the misunderstanding if he saw that bundle SKU up there at a slightly lower price (see above).

        • +3

Ryzen 2600 for example has increased from $245 to $259?

Last night they had bundle deals (when purchasing with additional components) listed for both the 2600 and 2600X. The 2600 was $245 in the bundle, and $259 on its own.

Had the Ryzen 5 2600 bundle deal in my cart as well for $245, which has no disappeared entirely :(

    WD Red 10tb +$30
    WD Red 8tb +$20
    Seagate Ironwolf 10tb +$30
    Seagate Ironwolf 8tb +$40

The Seagate 10tb is now $499, it is under $450 at 10 different stores on staticice and more on ebay (pcbyte et al.)

    • Looks like blatant price jacking. But based on the purchase history I don't think they changed it overnight. Probably they had advanced knowledge of this sale and jacked them up much earlier? Though I wouldn't blame them. They do need to make a profit after all! With eBay giving sales this frequently I don't think any store can sustain this model.

    • Yeah they were these prices for a few months.

The WD reds 8tb come down to ~$303 with the code. Not been this cheap since 25%ebay sale.

Still a lot of bargains there

    • +13

I'm not going to get drawn on all of these — please see my comments in previous threads with similar deals. I will answer once for this deal for the people who may not have seen my previous posts on Ozbargain

We don't promise to have the best price on all SKUs all the time, that would be a good way to go broke, but we often do have the best price, and try to be competitive otherwise while keeping up both communications (hello!) and service.

We clearly do not "Jack" our prices for these deals if you look at a large range of our eBay listings. It would be another matter, and not unreasonable, if we kept ebay prices above our regular shop prices to cover the ebay fees as many competitors do. As it so happens, we keep them matched (for now) as well and if we decide not to at some stage, we will make that clear.

As far as changes before and during deals go, all i can is check price history changes yourself across a reasonable sample of manufacturers/categories. For every recent increase I know there is usually multiple decreases. Its particularly annoying for us when people raise examples which are clearly untrue and easy to check

See my comments on Ryzen above — someone believed we increased all our Ryzen pricing for this deal when in fact if you actually check, you can see it stayed the same for most SKUs and the one he used as a example we actually just reduced!

Now, as for the HDDs, some costs have come up over the last couple of months, and we have increased prices. Most people will know the $ has been trending lower of late, and that puts upward pressure on prices.

I will give you a price change history on say the 10TB Ironwolf right from my internal log:

      29/08/2018 Change to $499
      19/08/2018 Change to $519
      19/07/2018 Change to $469
      21/12/2017 Change to $488
      14/09/2017 Change to $527
      26/08/2017 Change to $549
      04/08/2017 Change to $595

So on that particular SKU, we have "jacked" the price DOWN just before this deal.

The increase earlier this month was largish, and a combination of selling out lower cost stock from our last bulk deal + a general wholesale price increase. If you look at the longer term trend - prices start bit high, prices often drop over time, sometimes we do a big volume deal that pushes the price very low for a short time, get a very good price and drop further, after they sell prices are put back up in line with the more regular cost, and sometimes there is generally pressure for price increases that can be currency or manufacturer related. In particular, look at those dates and you can see that prices don't suddenly get reduced before or after deals on eBay!

      ..Adam

      • +10

It's good to see you fighting back Adam! I for one applaud that you guys are running 20% off, I know it's hard in the tech world to do anything like that!

      • -3

I don't pretend you are stupid. You pop the price up from $20 above the the competition (fine you have overheads too) to $70 above.
10 days before the sale, then drop it $20….so it isn't a price jack.
Maybe you had no idea and ebay surprised you with a sale you didnt know about for 2 weeks.

        It's fine its your store.
But we are trying to grab bargains here and any opportunity to grab a sub $385 10tb ironwolf would be awesome, especially when ebay foots at least some of the sale bill.

And is that a forced $15 postage? No option to do free pickup?

        • nobody is forcing you to buy from CA! Buy elsewhere cheaper. CA is a respectable seller here on ozb!

Just because I can't see a good pricing on an ssd that I am after for this sale, doesn't mean i'm going to suddenly accuse CA of price jacking or highlight shop x , y are way cheaper!!!

I tell you some folks and their "self" entitlements… sheez!

CA has given me and others plenty of bargains over the years and are probably the only rarity seller left behind from the jack club!

          Respect!

      • Adam - I am trying to buy 1 x 8tb Ironwolf, since i am ebay plus i get free shipping.
however when I add 2 x 128gb micro cards in the order. It decide to charge me $15 on shipping. Anything you can do here or its a ebay thing?

        • eBayPlus is a mess right now, and we have raised concerns about the inconsistency with eBay.

We have been told they are making changes, know its not ideal at the moment, and they will sort it out (eventually!).

I think the idea is a great one, and quite generous, but I know some stores are trying to unreasonably exploit it and eBays response has not been ideal so far. I do have some sympathy for them, but its still frustrating that those of us doing the right thing by maintaining our shipping at subsidized rates are still being hit.

Unfortunately we have no control over it but have pointed out some specifics we want fixed. eg apparently all motherboards from all suppliers were dropped from eBayPlus. I have not eta on fixes or a more consistent approach

          ..Adam

We have a fair number in stock, just don't want 100s bought our by a single buyer for certain models.

I know its a pain, but only system we could work out to stop dealers buying the lot where stock is limited and we want to spread them around to retail customers. Unfortunately, eBay has no system for directing limiting sales per buyer account or order.
