  • Awesome unit for the price, works well with Roon, Volumio and MPD. Have driven with a NUC and Raspberry Pi.

  • Awesome unit, respect for a DAC with no buttons and dials, just does. Auto and and off is desired.

Does it require any software to run? Would you recommend pairing this with a 2.1 soundbar?

    • respect for a DAC

Everything that plays digital audio has a DAC with no buttons and dials.

Should work with anything that plays music and has USB or TOSLINK output. Of course, if you use it with a CD player, no software required (but would be a bit wasted IMHO).

      • i owned a portable DAC two years ago and sold it when i got my axon7. That DAC had volume, hi/lo and input on it. I'll run it through HTPC which does most of the audio processing at home. Thanks mostlygordon

      • +2

Note TOSLINK is only input, so strike that CD player comment. Use a PC, Raspberry Pi or smart phone.

        • Yep, a beefy Pi unit or a netbook + this DAC and a pair of satellite speakers ( better yet, powered speakers if you have battery/mains power) could make a very nice decent quality semi-portable audio system!

TOPPING D10 is a USB DAC with Line out, Optical and Coaxial output

So you need another DAC to decode the optical and coaxial outputs from the Topping D10?

    • You plug into the line in of your home HiFi / AVR. The output is a high quality ESS DAC that should sound better than DACs mid level AVRs will have. Plus it plays up to DSD256, PCM384kHz/32bit.

D10 Line Out > Receiver Line In > Receiver Amp > Speakers
        — OK, I get that.

D10 Optical Out > Receiver Optical In > Receiver DAC > Receiver Amp > Speakers
D10 Coaxial Out > Receiver Coaxial In > Receiver DAC > Receiver Amp > Speakers
        — No, I don't get these.

        • You're not alone, I don't get those either. Why waste the ESS DAC? Although, the third person in the Amazon reviews did it for some reason…

        • The digital outputs are mainly intended for people that have a favourite (and potentially very expensive) DAC or Receiver that doesn't support USB input. In this case the D10 just acts as a digital signal converter allowing them to use a USB source with their existing setup.

  • Hey guys,

Sorry for asking silly questions, but I've got this set (https://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=3510) and the Amplifier didn't survive moving 15K kilometers. The two audio speakiers RMS 40W each work well and I'd like to bring them back to life.

Would the D10 mini help me out or I'd need something else? From the images it sounds like it would, but I'm not sure if it can run the 80W RMS speakers..

    Thanks!

    • The D10 is a DAC. It is not an Amp. It does not drive speakers.

    • No, it's just got non-amplified line output. You would be after something like this: https://www.amazon.com.au/Topping-TP30-MK2-Digital-Amplifier…
Not that I'm recommending that model, haven't researched these.

      • Thank you! Missed the Amp isn't included - silly me :( here's why no wattage :)
Could Anyone recommend a fair Amp?

  • Surely you could buy the same without the pointless screen for a fraction of this price right ?

    • +1

The readout is really useful to check your software is correctly setup and you have the expected bitrate. Even once things are setup, I use random play a lot, and when I hear a sound change, I will think, I bet that's HiRes, and can glance down at the D10 to check.

  • sounds like something i could have fun with …would i connect up with a haedphone amp ?

    • You certainly could… whether you would is up to you :)

  • Another question for the experts out there, I have a Topping D2 and a pair of Bose Companion 20 hooked up to my Mac. Does anyone know how I can use the Topping D2, would I have to buy another amp?

  • I think the Bose is using 3.5mm in that case plug the D2 to your Mac USB and plug your Bose to the D2 3.5mm.

    • Would the D2 be strong enough to handle the speakers as it's a headphone amp.

      • Currently you are using the Mac 3.5mm to the Bose, right? Won't be any difference with the D2 to the Bose.

        • Alright, does that make good use of the D2 or is there a better way to set it up like buying another component?

        • @99altezza:

If you want to use it with your Mac, get a good HD headphone, otherwise connect the D2 RCA to AV Receiver with a good pair of speaker. I am using my D10 with a pair of Infinity 162 bookshelf.

Also try Hi-Res Audio, it is so much better than CD.

          @mostlygordon:

mostlygordon get give you some good suggestion with headphone.

        • @superforever:
LOL, love my Sennheiser HD800S'. You need a very good balanced Amp to get the most out of them though.

      • The Bose Companion 20 speakers are self-powered, they only need a standard line level signal as input which is exactly what you get out of your D2 and your Mac. There's no 'other component' you can add that's going to improve the sound quality, other than scrapping the speakers all together and getting a whole new amp/speaker setup.

You could always try another DAC such as the D10 here, but I doubt you'd notice a difference from your D2.

        • @superforever:
These headphones are $2600, way out of my budget. I’m looking for HD quality headphones that are bang for the buck??

        • Most of the time I use HD650's as I don't feel the need to treat them with kid gloves. I also have Oppo PM-3's which are much easier to drive and great for portable use being closed back. The HD800S' come out of their box for extended critical listening sessions. And go straight back in their box afterwards!

After the lotto win, or when the house gets paid off, these are on the radar https://en-au.sennheiser.com/sennheiser-he-1

  • Another seller have it for $130 at the moment.
