This looks like an amazing laptop for the specs. Everywhere I could only find close to $1700. Any thoughts on this?

Was looking something I can hook 3 screens to for web dev work. Looks powerful enough. The processor ranks 48th out of 1127 on CPU Benchmark

Gigabyte Sabre's are reskinned clevos to the best of my knowledge.

https://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/p3471_me… - this offering is effectively the same, except no OS, 8g ram and a 2g gpu. Adding OS and another 8g ram makes it $1357 including delivery from Perth.

    Or you can get the

https://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/p3474_me… - again without OS, only 8g of ram, but with the 1050TI gpu. Adding OS and another 8g ram makes it $1497.

    • Thanks, any idea on the build quality of all these in general? Much cheaper than other big brand models yet not very popular. Seriously considering pulling the trigger on one of these.

Good "recent" thread commenting on their pros/cons.

I personally know of 2 friends who buy a metabox/clevo unit every 2-3 years (they're rich), and rave on the price to performance/quality ratio.

When my current gigabyte laptop dies I will be purchasing a metabox/clevo.

There's also an Australian Tech youtuber "Jarrod's Tech" who I follow, who posts reviews on metabox units - might be worth checking them out.

      • Hi LongBlack.

I have a Metabox laptop and I love it.

The guys at Metabox in Perth are really helpful (via phone or email, as I'm in Melbourne). I haven't had any problems with mine but from those who have, they've mentioned the support is easy, fast and efficient.

I'll definitely buy another one from them when the time comes. Unbeatable value for money in my opinion.

      • Whilst Clevo/Metabox represent value for money. They do not have a long life and warranty support from does not exist.

The 7yr old laptop it replaced, replaced it whilst I hunted for another replacement. It only lasted a couple years. Only good part of the story is the 6x 18650 batteries.

A friend bought an identical Metabox, similiar story to mine.

        Good luck!

  • I had a horize which I think is clevo. I won't be buying another due to 2 reasons. Coulda just been my model but still I won't chance it again.
1- unless u really really know what ur doing and know the best ways to install drivers with their components and need to update them in the future (software wise) /factory reset it then stay away.
2- after 4 years which ok is a decent run the plastic frame on mine started breaking and coming lose which made the fan keep hitting the frame which lead me to undo the bottom casing permanently….

I did get a tech guy out to look at the issues and he told me it was common for the frame to start failing. He also couldn't fix the driver issues.

    • horize were clevo, but their supplier, LBO went bust 5-7 years ago - was a massive issue on WP.

Pretty sure MLN are the "official" repariers of horize (clevos).

Re: frame, my 5 year old gigabyte's hinge doesn't work anymore, also plastic chassis is tearing apart (I have a permanent cutout at the fan exhaust now. I'd say its common on any plastic product.

    • Pretty sure most people can update drivers …

      • Buzzz no.. not that simple with their set ups. I spent a solid 45+ hours trying to fix them with research and the tech guy couldn't do it. The company had to work closely with the manufacturers of all parts to do installation in a correct way and possible use their own methods/coding to fix it.
I mean it would work but always had gpu issues that would cause low fps. I coulda been overwhelmed… but less likely

  • What is it with laptops and no HDMI2 ?
Even high end laptops don't seem to have it.

if you want to hook up multiple screens and do web development, you need to consider if you want to pay a premium for the portability of a laptop, or just get a desktop which comes with more power cpu and better expansion capability and also upgrade capability …..can’t upgrade gpu on laptop you can on desktop down the track.

need to remember that a laptop cpu and gpu is a cut down mobile version of a desktop cpu and gpu, they use similar numbers for marketing but when you look at spec of the desktop vs mobile versions there is a big difference.

i have a desktop that use the most , and a cheaper laptop if i need to go on site or courses, $1400 gets you both, and you being limited to the laptop screen when away from base slows you down anyway as you miss the larger screen from the desktop.

also having both allows you to better test the apps, turn your desktop into a server and use the cheaper laptop as a client, and if you are getting into virtualisation so you can get buy with 1 device, you will need windows 10 pro not home edition.

    • Thanks, that was what I was looking at initially but the desktop itself (a Lenovo ThinkCentre) was coming out to $1350 by itself. I looked at these and they come in at $150 more but with a better GPU, additional 1TB HDD and not to mention the laptop display as well.

think centre is a SFF so only takes low profile cards, non std size mother board and power supply, better to stick with std components and get a system from msy one of the other suppliers, then you can put in any graphics cards you want and also leverage the cheap sata 2.5” ssd that are always on offer, we’ve seen 1tb sata sd down to $250, and 256gb sata for under $100.

SFF are popular in commercial offices as they are supported by maintenance contracts and meet the needs of workers who don’t pay for their own hardware, work supplied, and everybody gets similar model to make support easy.

    • need to remember that a laptop cpu and gpu is a cut down mobile version of a desktop cpu and gpu

I am pretty sure this is not the case anymore for most 10xx NVIDIA GPUs and some Higher end laptop have full desktop chips on them starting from 6th gen.

The only mobile 10xx chip i know is the 1060 Max-Q. One interesting article I read actually is that the 1050ti made for laptops have higher clockspeeds than their desktop counter parts, making them faster.

      • A 3GB GTX1060 desktop card will outperform a laptop with a gtx1060 6GB

Laptop 10 series graphics chips can’t be used to their full potential due to power limit throttling

        • Laptop 10 series graphics chips can’t be used to their full potential due to power limit throttling

Yes that's correct and thermal throttling, but doesn't change the fact that those are desktop chips in a laptop which I was only pointing out.

  • seen a few 1050ti's and 1060's around this price

  • Gigabyte seems to be of a pretty good quality. Note this laptop cannot do 4K with 60fps

    • Of course it can't - there are very few laptops that can.

  • the reason the mobile cpu and gpu are cutdown versions is cooling ……if you look at the fans required to cool the desktop versions , you can’t fit those into a laptop, and speed makes heat.

even the cpu, a desktop might be 65w, laptop 10w, they are very cunning with model numbers and things like i7 and clock speed, but then the fin print of performance comes in when desktop and mobile versions are compared.

there is a reason why a desktop graphics card has so much cooling, and a desktop cpu has so much cooling and you can’t fit that into a laptop.

    • You're mostly right.

Laptop CPUs are not'cut down' versions of their desktop versions - they're specifically designed for laptops from the ground up. The major differences are in power consumption, and custom power optimisations, since they have to run on battery and have reduced cooling capacity due to space constraints.

Laptop GPUs are more like 'cut down' versions of their desktop equivalents. They use the same processing chips as desktop versions (since the GTX 10xx series), but are built into a smaller board, have lower clock speeds and reduced power consumption, for the same reasons as above.

It's worth noting that with the massive increase in power efficiency in CPU and GPU design over the past few years, most desktop CPUs and GPUs don't need anywhere near as much cooling as many people assume. The rise of very powerful mini ITX gaming machines demonstrates this.

The typical 'enthusiast desktop' PC, with a huge vented case, a 1000W power supply and a plethora of fans blowing every which way, is a meme at this point. You could fill most of the case with cotton wool without seeing any meaningful reduction in performance. Of course, if you're heavily overclocking the CPU and GPU then you may need a little more careful thought.

  • Good laptop got this for 1340 odd with the 25% off eBay plus and also the woolies discounts.van say it is a good budget overall work laptop only downside for me is the short battery life and decent build quality not the best around.but got the power for a good price
