PIXEL

I'm in the market for a travel camera

This one has just been released - generally goes for around $550 and cheapest I've seen is $499 at Plaza cameras so this seems like a good price but there is limited stock

The other camera I'm looking at is the Olympus TG5 which at $487 is also on special but lots of stock

  • DPReview did a pretty good comparison (though light on detail on the Panasonic since it was not yet released) - the Olympus should be the better of the two.

    • Yes it gets higher ratings it seems

Plus looking at video the Olympus looks better

    • Have compared Olympus and Panasonics ever since the FT-1 and have always bought the Panasonic only because it fits in the pocket better in an otherwise close comparison

  • +1

1/2.3 sensor though. I suggest a minimum 1" sensor, even on a travel camera. The Lumix TZ110 or a Sony 1" would be my choice.

  • Had a TG4 and the waterproof hatch flicked open first time I snorkelled. Became an aquarium for rest of trip.

TG5 has exactly same hatch setup .. so buyer beware.

    • I've been using a TG-5 for a few months now underwater with no issues.

It's taken some amazing pictures too. I'm sure a better 1" camera would be an improvement, but for an underwater setup would cost at least double the price of this.

    • Was it a freak coincidence that the safety switch and then the door switch got tripped? Or was the safety switch not engaged before you went under?

  • I got a Nikon like this - highly recommend it

  • i have an older model of these, my thoughts are pretty positive. no problems in the water but I wouldnt tempt the devil by putting it back in water a few years later.

I had an old sony (tx100?) also waterproof but the sand and crap would get caught in the flap over the lense

    • The Panasonics allow you to replace the seals if they perish with age. Having said that my original FT-1 seals are still good. I use mine in salt water/surf and make sure to rinse well after each use.

      • hmm i'll look into it, i still dont know if i'd trust a job done by myself.
