    Gulf Western PREMIUM GOLD 15W40 5L $9.99

JV : is it extra virgin?

  • interesting… didn't know they can make oils suitable for both petrol & diesel

and why would anyone get magnatec when the edge is a few bux more during sales

    • +1

Edge 5w40 is $67 in the catalogue.

I believe even the cheapest full synthetic will protect an engine much better than any semi synthetic or mineral oil, especially as it ages so $30 is a great bargain for the magnatec.

      • 35 bux during sales

        • I agree with you bud, my opinion also feels Edge is most likely a much better oil but some people buy semi synth oils for more than $30 which is really really really dumb when 5L full synthetic oils are often on sale for the $30 mark

        • +1

@bm: The Magnatec for sale here is the full synthetic version. I believe it is the only one in the Magnatec range to be full synthetic, the rest of them are semi synthetic.

Which now begs the question, why would you get Edge full synthetic over this if they're both full synthetic?

Any full synthetic oil for $30 is a bargain.

        • @SW20R:

Going from memory, "full synthetic" can be 3 different types, the completely man made is Group IV and Group V.

IIRC, Group III is derived from or manufactured from components of mineral oil but so highly modified, it behaves like a real synthetic. Most cheaper synthetics are Group III.

One way to think of the difference between a full and semi synthetic or mineral oil is comparing it to an SSD and a mechanical hard drive. Many SSDs have big differences in behaviour, but the slowest SSD is magnitudes better than the fastest mechanical HDD, just like the cheapest full synthetic will be orders of magnitude better than a mineral oil, especially as the oil ages in use.

I can't find a data sheet for magnatec 5w40, the link on castrols site throws an error
          https://www.castrol.com/en_au/australia/car-engine-oil/engin…

In my engines, I'm satisfied using a cheap full synthetic. I agree with paying a few bucks extra for Edge or Penrite when they're $35 for 5L though.

If an oil is Group IV or V, they'll boast about it and you'll probably pay a lot more.

  • can you mix full synthetic with semi synthetic? I still have 3.5L of magnatec from supercheap left over. MY car takes 6.5 litres
