but are also highly effective at blocking out daily noise like voices and the background sounds you might hear

Do they work effectively with wives and girlfriends?

    • +16

Nothing is effective on people who "Hear Voices" be it of wives or girlfriends.

    • +3

Technically the noise cancelling is designed to be effective against constant frequency noises (ie. plane engine). So shrill voices might not be as effective but from the M2 it did a hell of a great job at it imo

      • +2

How about wife or gf continuous nagging? 🤣

        • +1

You need to engage your internal noise reduction for that.

        • -1

You haven't learnt to quiet it down with a series of "yes dear" ?

        • @Agret: Works great! Just wait for the pauses between the noise and say "yes dear" then wait for the next pause.

You’d need to position the earcups over their mouths for best effect.

      From one of the reviews:
"The headphones offer HD QN1 noise cancelling which Sony says has approximately four times greater performance than the previous processor, cancelling out ambient noise, such as human voices and the buzz of busy streets"

  • Anyone know if they resolved the issue of the head band cracking after a few months of heavy use?

    • +3

That was the original mark 1 version, they fixed it in version 2. This version 3 hasn't been released here?

      • I saw reports that the MKII had similar issues (https://imgur.com/a/GY36q …and other sources). That, and the rumoured poor response of Sony on warranty claims pushed me over to the Sennheiser PXC 550. I'm keen to see how the MKIII goes though. These seem to be arguably the most advanced wireless ANC cans out there - shame about the alleged build issues.

3 - 6 months should tell. The design seems to have been substantially changed.

        • +3

The reports were blown out of proportion. The vast majority of people had no issues.

And it's had more than 3-6 months. Plenty of people here have a pair and haven't reported any problems with it.

          But it's up to you.

        • +2

My mark 1 headbands cracked. Lots of us came together on ozbargain talking about our cracked headbands.

It’s all fun to say it’s “rare” though we’ll never know for sure as Sony doesn’t release numbers. It did become a common enough fault for them to just start replacing them. And it’s not fun when it happens to you.

        • @lostn: I mean 3-6 months on the MK3 being released (which is now) before any issues (if there are any) show up.

Don't get me wrong…the Sony's were almost the pick for me…but for that lingering doubt about the build and Sony's service response to any issues people had. When researching, I didn't see any such stories about the Sennheisers. On balance, it just seemed that there was some doubt (no matter how rare) about the Sony cans.

I'll be keen to see feedback on the MK3 XM.

        • @Untameable:

My mark 1 headbands cracked. Lots of us came together on ozbargain talking about our cracked headbands.

There was no shortage of reports about cracked 1000X here from users. No such personal reporting happened with XM2s.

        • +1

          @Banj0:

I mean 3-6 months on the MK3 being released (which is now) before any issues (if there are any) show up.

Are you going to do this for every product that comes out? If they fixed it with XM2 why would you assume they broke it again and have to wait? Suppose there are no problems with XM3, would you suggest avoiding XM4 for another 3-6 months just in case they break it again?

All it takes is one person's report to instill doubt. What you don't know is how widespread it is. With 1000X, it was very widespread. XM2 it was isolated incidents only, with nowhere near as many reports as 1000X. I don't work for Sony though. It's your money. I just don't think your fears are rational. The one guy spreading FUD about XM2 hated Sony with a passion and was hardly impartial. But it's enough to put you off all of their headphone products for all time.

        • @lostn: Sigh.

    • Completely redesigned headband so shouldn't be an issue now!

  • Bought the XM2 off these guys around boxing day. Extremely prompt response and shipping.

Out of curiosity, have you guys had any RMAs around cracking headbands? Mine seem absolutely fine, and firmly believe that people are just trolling.

    • I believe the cracking issue is the 1st model XM1? My friend had his cracked just recently and was bought under a year or so

  • I need these on the 25th as I'm flying out 26th, is it possible?

    • +2

Absolutely. Addicted to Audio will time travel for you. Their service really goes above and beyond - or behind in your case.

      • i think he meant the 25th of this month. september.

    • I unfortunately wouldn't want to guarantee that at this stage, I could do what I can but it really depends on exactly when the stock arrives!

  • I have the XM2's (bought from Addicted last year) and love them but for one HUGE problem - the noise cancelling turns off after a short time if you are not playing anything through them which is a real PITA if you are using them to help you sleep on a long haul flight.

I see that Sony have fixed this with the XM3s which is great news. Too bad I can't afford to upgrade yet.

    • +1

That's true if not connected to anything. But you can leave them connected to your phone and not play anything for as long as you like, from my experience.

    • the noise cancelling turns off after a short time if you are not playing anything through them

Same thing happens with the Sony WH-CH700N. A little disappointing, as i was hoping to take advantage of ANC while saving on Bluetooth power consumption.

    • plugin the audio cable, it will keep the NC on

      • My aim was to use ANC without having a cable or BT connection.

        • +1

I've heard some people have made a chopped down aux cable adapter. Still not quite what your after, but better than the full cable

    • The new ones solve this issue through an app.

  • Bought M2 from them last year too and happy. Any deal on wi-1000x?

  • Best ANC headphone ever, probably. but i have the h9i now (plus qc35) :)

    • For me, the dealbreaker for the h9i (and in extension the QC35IIs) are the poor range of audio codecs - LDAC if used correctly sounds so much better than aptX or AAC. Otherwise (with the exception of type-c charging, which I can bear), the H9i's are amazing.

    • I have the H8's (no ANC)…and I think the build quality of that series is on a whole different level to Sony's cans.

I prefer the sound and ANC on my PXC 550's though.

      But oh…the B&O quality….

  • I got XM2. Wish I waited for this.

Didn't expect to see anything more than a minor update. Bose seemed to have given up improving QC35. XM2 was just 1000X with the headband cracking issue fixed, and longer battery life.

But it's a pretty substantial improvement in any area where they could have improved it. They've outdone themselves from what I hear.

    • @lostn I wouldn't worry about having the Xm2. There will always be new models out. If there are features of the Xm2 that your not happy with and they have improved on the Xm3 then maybe consider selling the XM2. You should still get something for it. Having said that the Xm3s are not a significant update. Improvements, but marginal. Given the price point at the moment for the new ones. If you don't have a pair yet and are looking at Bose. Then the Sonys are the better ones from current specs.

By the way when I was going to get wireless over the ear headphones I was adamant that I would end up with Bose. Then went to an airport kiosk and the salesperson mentioned the award wining Xm2. Tried them and that just changed everything. No regrets. So don't second guess your purchase. Xm2s are awesome.

      • I have both XM2 and QC35 II.

The XM2 sound better and have better ANC (especially on a plane — hold down the ANC button when on a plane to get even better ANC).

But the QC35 has more spacious cups. It's one trump card is that it's more comfortable and less warm after a long session.

XM3 improves upon the comfort by making them bigger and lighter. The improved ANC is icing on the cake.

I'll probably wait for XM4 though, unless XM3 can be found for sub $300. Then I'll be tempted to get it because I just want best in class ANC.

  • It will be available for sub-$400 within a month, mark my words.

    • Maybe by Christmas

    • -1

Yeah I imagine so. XM2s were and no reason to believe this will be different.

There was also some big discounts on first gen last time so that may repeat again too.

      • XM2 had a lower retail price than 1000X, by $50 USD.

    • Consider them marked.

      • $353 through JBHIFI Commercial.

Or $398 with JB price match at HN + Amex offer.

        I feel vindicated!

        • Is JB Hifi commercial open to all? Nope. Doesn't count.

Amex offers don't count. If you don't have AMEX or don't have the offer, you can't get it. Price matches or beats shouldn't count either.

Unless the deal is freely accessible, it's not an advertised price.

You have not been vindicated. Yet anyway. There's still a week left for you though.

If you're going to count all of these hacks as a price cut, you may as well include buying it on gumtree from someone who stole it to resell. Or some credit given from an order cancellation due to price error. Or a targeted ebay offer/voucher. I think you can understand why these things don't count.

          • @lostn: I don't agree with the stolen goods analogy.

My claim had nothing to do with advertised prices, simply that they would be available (through legitimate channels) for less than $400. And they are.

The fact that some people aren't able to access the deal is by the by. Similar to if the deal were at a bricks and mortar shop in Perth - just because you happen to be in Melbourne and can't take advantage of it doesn't detract from the fact that it's a good deal. Same here.

  • -3

I think the chippest M2 was around $260.

Why would people pay around 80% more for M3?

    • +1

Because it has just been released and people are willing to pay a premium to be the first to get their hands on it.

Price will drop over the coming weeks and months.

      • What all the 'price will drop real soon!' folks are forgetting is that the 1st and 2nd gen XM's were in direct competition with the Bose QC35's. The XM3's are all on its own as Bose hasn't even hinted on a new model to challenge. IMO the price will stay above the $400 mark until then.

        • They are still in competition with the Bose headphones. Just because Bose doesn't release products in line with Sony doesn't mean they immediately lose all interest in their product and all potential purchasers automatically pick Sony.

I am fairly certain we will see these for less than $400 within a month (most likely, through an eBay discount promotion, e.g. they are listed for $450 (the current price) combined with an eBay 15 or 20% off promo).

        • @nexus4:

If it's still a competition with Bose QC35's, which I'm not counting, then its a lose situation for Bose.

It's 2 year old tech vs 3 weeks. IN CPU terms its like pitting a new Intel chip against a 2 year old AMD, or a brand new car loaded with features vs the 2 year old model with less features… completely different. The only thing Bose had over the Xm2's were comfort and weight, which have now been addressed.

Fact is, people are already choosing these Sony's over the Bose. Just look across at Youtube with reviews and comments. I was on the fence myself, waiting on Bose to make an announcement, been almost a month now. Their silence has me going to Sony.

Of course I would be glad to be proven wrong, but because of this lack of competition and seeming demand (ATA say they're almost exhausted stock), I don't think we'll see these Sony's break <$400 this year.

        • -1

          @f0x13:

There are still many many people who would buy the 2 year old Bose, because they think Bose is the best.

You may think there is no competition because the Sony are clearly better (which they very well may be), but i'd like to see sale numbers. I'd wager the number of people that just think "Bose is best" outweighs the people who do the research and listen to reviews.

There is competition, but possibly just a different type of competition than you are considering (on branding, rather than on tech). If you dont think the two are competing for the average consumer, then you are very naive.

        • +1

          @f0x13:

Lol, I think you are significantly overestimating the average consumers' interest in the processor inside their headphones.

Average consumer also doesn't know or care that the Bose were released 12 months ago.

Average consumer cares about price, brand, ubiquity (e.g. my friend has it so I'll get it) and perceived performance. Bose has all of these.

Of course some people like us will choose the Sony's. But to claim that Bose is not a competitive force is absurd and wrong.

        • @f0x13:

Wait till the end of the year. Around Xmas time. My guess $350. AA or JBHI will have sales. Or the Sony Kiosk in Sydney seem to do random pricing.

  • I loved my xm2's but in call quality was so crap.

I wonder if it's fixed on the xm3's as according to the reviews they now have additional microphones.

    • +1

We will have to see, a test will be in order!

  • +1

I know it's pretty niche, but i wish they would just add AptX-LL support. They have every other variety of AptX (in addition to LDAC), so surely it wouldnt cost that much to implement AptX-LL support too.

I get that Apt-X is generally not important for typical usage (music listening), but surely the versatility of being able to use the same pair for lower latency TV or gaming usage would be handy for a bunch of users.

If this had AptX-LL, I would buy one for sure!

    • Its odd that they didnt include APTX-LL in such a high end model, however I would be surprised if they dont include it in this models successor next year with APTX Adaptive.

    • So you think these cans still have sound delay when watching Video? I have some cheap headphones with Apt-X LL and absolutely no delay. Such a shame if $500 headphone will have sound delay. Probably I will wait until they include the Apt-X LL.

      • They will definitely have more delay (I believe it's in the vacinity of 40ms for AptX-LL, compared to 140+ or something like that for regular AptX. Not sure of LDAC or AptX-HD).

Whether you notice the difference will depend on you and your perception - i believe they say ~100ms is when most people notice it.

  • How many of these are you expecting to get in stock? I might cancel the pre-order I had with Sony

    • Right now we will still have some available but I wouldn't dawdle as it is quite limited!

  • i bought kmart noise cancelling headphones for $25, they good.

  • @addictedtoaudio When these ship on the 26th, will it be express or overnight type courier? As I'm flying out on the 29th (Sat), and would ideally like to grab a set for that flight, but being in Perth they'd either need to be shipped express post, or a garunteed overnight courier service for that to realistically happen.

    • @SiriX

      Express as under 5kg :)

Normally goes overnight to perth, never a set guarantee of course but it is their express service!

  • No point preordering, wait till they come out in store for better pricing. Its not like there's gonna be a shortage of $500 headphones

  • guys, please make sure you dont need to make calls outside using these headphones.

XM2 is terrible on call quality. The other party on the phone doesnt hear a bit when using them on street or trains.

    cheers

  • Cheaper on eBay now $480 - 10%. 12 mth au warranty. Shipping 26th too based on details.

    Can you price match it?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/263932935290

    • Looks like a BS account. Seller sells glitter and then out of nowhere a pair of headphones.

    • That seller only has 92% good feed back. I wouldn't buy anything from a seller less then 98-99%. You'd want to check they have stock. Wouldn't be surprised if they are putting up on line first then getting stock, knowing its a new item. For now suppose 13% off is ok. Given its just come out. Id go AA as they have stores and have good customer service.
