Free $100 ColesMyer gift card by signing up to Red Energy's 2 year Online Energy Saver contract.

50

I was attracted to this offer not only for the $100 gift card but by the additional 5% pay-on-time discount. Their electricity rates for my location are exactly the same as my current provider Energy Australia on the regulated plan. We all use electricity and any discount is extra money in your pocket. Although you will have to sign up on a 2 year plan and put your trust in them to not jack up the rates faster than their competitors. Red Energy are owned by Snowy Hydro Ltd.

Red Energy, winner of the Canstar Blue Most Satisfied Customers, Electricity Providers - Victoria award in 2010.

As such, they can't be too bad…

  • Has anyone here tried Red Energy ???

    • Yep, been around for at least a few years.

Best to do a comparison for your electricity using one of the electricity comparing websites, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/list_of_price_comparison_si…, then asses if your savings over 2 years will be more than this deal.

      • i was thinking more around service and any billing problems…

(phone companies don't have a monopoly on bad systems and bad service unfortunately…)

Have a read of the comments here as well:
      http://www.productreview.com.au/showitem.php?item_id=61598
I received this deal in the mail but after reading those comments decided not to take up the offer.

      • Is that a trust worthy site? I see lots of 1 star review have dodgy (competitor) username. They used to allow people to give review without registering. Where's the accountability in that?

I personally had a very bad experience with AGL door-to-door sale rep. They came knocking at my mom door. After looking at a previous bill, promised her a lower bill if she signed with them. (Big Fat Liar, cause we previously moved from AGL to Red because of AGL more expensive rates.) My mom don't have the sufficient English to read the contract to confirm what they told her. When a I saw the contract almost 2 months later, I rang up and complaint but they said there's nothing they can do as it cooling off period has expired. This is before the new account suppose to begin the month after. I end up writing to the Energy Commission/Ombudsman who called me back the next day. They got AGL to call me back within the week and cancel the contract without penalty.

Any company that use third party sale reps will likely end up with complaints about dodgy tactics duping people into sign bad contracts. If RED get similar complaints then they could have the same people knocking on your door. This month for AGL, in three month times for RED.

  • almost all providers now offer 5-10% on-time discount
in-fact give your existing provider a call & tell them about RED's offer, they might even get you 15% off
PS: make sure the rates are same (can differ depending on location)

  • is there any fee to move over RE?

    • only if you're in a contract

I'm confuse as so much info @ RED (step1-3?), which 1 is cheaper for me?
As I notice service @ Momentum is cheaper.

    • It depends what your electricity usage is. The second one would be good if your house has peak/off-peak power and you work night shifts/vacuum/do laundry/etc at night.

Best to get your bill and plug in your numbers to the electricity comparison sites.

  • Thought home elect prices were fixed. Last time I checked EA and AGL all used fixed NSW gov't prices.

  • I'm in VIC and deciding whether to go with Red or Energy Australia. EA seems to have better reviews.

  • I have been using Red energy for 4 your now, pretty happy with their rates. I get 10% pay on time discount because I've been with them for a while now. I thought they usually give 7% discount to new customer?
I recently referred a friend to Red energy, we both got $50 Coler Myer gift card each and he got 7% pay on time disc. Anyone here want to join Red energy and need referral let me know. I'll be happy to refer you and we'll both get $50 gift card :D

    • Do I get a $50 card on top of the $100 they are offering?

      • I think you do. But I believe this $100 gift card deal is only open to existing customers who switch over to their Online Energy Saver 2 year contract.

      • Can anyone confirm this?

  • +1

Hope you guys looked at 'A Current Affair' last night : http://aca.ninemsn.com.au/investigations/8217650/power-scam-…

    • -1

How is that relevant to this offer ???

  • I called up Red Energy a couple of months ago thinking about switching and asked them about their deals. I think the lady told me that this offer was only open to EXISTING customers. The only contract offer for new customers was the 7% pay on time discount for both gas AND electricity, plus you get this little red book of offers and discounts…

    • Possibly a new thing, or just for Victoria?

      http://www.redenergy.com.au/page.html?products-victoria

"Online Offer available from 1/11/10 to 30/06/11 for new Victorian residential customers who sign up with Red by completing and submitting Red's online sign up form. One $100 Coles Group & Myer Gift Card will be issued to the new customer at their registered billing address once their transfer to Red is complete."

      For new customers.

  • Also remember that pay on time discounts sometimes only refer to the usage, rather than the total bill. Red gives you a discount on the total bill, as does Victoria Electricity (now called Lumo Energy) but I think Lumo's rates are higher.

    • sorry to snipe Victoria Energy, but I have heard some very bad comments about them (and Lumo) on whirlpool, not that long ago. Admittedly this is just anecdotal evidence, but it wasn't just one customer, it was many, all saying not good things about how the company deals with its customers.

  • Ask for 10% discount on Electricity. Just say that's what your friends is on. Their Gas plans are very similar to AGL so I did not bother switching.

    • you can do that too, only you won't get the book of vouchers (including cheaper movie tickets) which might be better in the long run

  • Shmahoo's advice:

Before you switch over to another company, give your current one a call and ask if they have any new promotions/deals that you should be aware of before you switch. In my opinion it's better the devil you know, and if you stick with your current provider, at least you know about their billing procedures, call centre employment policies, etc.

Also, just because one company gives a 10% discount, this doesn't mean they are cheaper than a company giving a 5% discount. It depends what the original price is for each provider. And someone else mentioned that the 5 or 10% off is usually off the usage charges, not the "service" fee.

  • Anyone in VIC here using Energy Australia?

They've got a pretty good deal too.
$75 bonus credit (site is down ATM though), 10% off total bill for electricity, 7% off total gas bill if taken with electricity, and the rates seems to be a little bit lower than Red Energy.

Plus the termination fee is only $20 compared to Red Energy's $120 for 1st yr, $70 for 2nd yr.

  • When I did my research at the end of last year EA were the best for me. Red Energy were not far behind, but I went with Red Energy as I managed to get a no-fee exit deal. I wanted to wait until the start of the year when I could check the price rise in the New Yeat. Having done that, think I will swap to EA. EA have a shorter winter period so the peak charges apply to a shorter period of time than Red Energy. I think EA have just been sold to Tru Energy, so that may also have an impact on the rates in the future.

  • We are with lumo with 7% early payment (electricity and gas in victoria).. I just called them regarding switching to red's offer and they put me on to 15% early payment discount for both gas and electricity..

  • Keep watching Lumo - I was with them for about 5 years and they sneakily put my rate up to more than the rate advertised on their website. When questioned, I worked out they had 'advised' me in the fine print of one of my bills. I got an enormous winter bill whcih is how I noticed the rate hike. I felt really ripped off, hence my motivation to move.

  • I just got offered 15% discount off my total bill after telling Lumo that Integral (my current supplier) were willing to offer 10%. The tarrifs are the same. Does anyone know if Qld tarrifs are variable or are they all the same?

  • Discounts are misleading because different power companies charge different rates in Victoria and SA (and to some extent in Queensland and NSW). Different retailers also increase their rates at different times during the year.
