      well played

  • How does this compare in the WD TV live ???

    • I'd like to know this as well.
Been looking for something dead simple for my old foke's

    • I guess there is no well-developed 3rd part firmware.

Essentially same as WDTV live except this one plays RMVB.

RMVB is a DEAD format EXCEPT if you are getting Asian shows.

What is it with Asian rippers that insist on RMVB?

      • The size of the file maybe? with a significant drop of picture quality comes a small file size… Its like watching VHS but with longplay on… just horrible lol

        • This was maybe true 5-10 years ago in the times of Kazaa or eMule, but these days H264/x264 mp4s are a lot more efficient in terms of size/quality.

H264 can compress a 350Mb video file down to 100Mb without too much loss of quality whereas RMVBs conversion would be an unwatchable soup.

H264 is great where compressing/encoding HD resolution videos down to normal or SD movies, the quality stays great, even when a 2.5Gb file is compressed into 350Mb. This is unthinkable in RMVB, Divx or Xvid.

It's smart actually, not sure of the specifics of how it works but RMVB handles large blocks of the same colour very well along with simple animation, i.e. drawing of character slides over drawing of background.

This is of course brilliantly suited to anime, giving very minimal loss of quality in minuscule files. You couldn't get close to this with avc or xvid or the like.

        • Sweet, finally some real info on why RMVB lives on. Cheers for the info.

      • File size is the issue simply because China has very slow internet.

  • thank gd for PS3 or else id be spending money on these things..

    • Until you want to play 1080p MKV and get sick of using mkv2vob.

Good luck with that PS3 trying to play everything you throw it it. It really is a joke as a media center!

  • I'm wondering if this is better or the AC Ryan HD Mini 2.

  • Any media player similar to this that comes with a built-in hard disk?

    • WDTV Live Hub has a 1Tb drive. Quite pricey though.

There is a guy on ebay from Taiwan selling the acer revo 3700 for $350. This includes everything except the OS (you can buy with with the OS).

You can then setup windows 7 or XBMC live and it would be a lot more versatile than this. The downside would be the price obviously and maybe the power/noise.

I user an apple TV 1st gen with a Crystal HD card and a linux boot and it works quite well. Just to say that XBMC is a really good product.

      • Pitty the Apple TV with Crystal HD card cannot work in 1080 with native ATV software. I understand it decodes 1080 but outputs at 720. Apart from what you have done i.e. wipe ATV and install linux, have the got the ATV OS to output at 1080?

        • I think a lot of people are using the 1080 output on their TV's. My TV is only 720 output although it accepts 1080 input and does the conversion. The ATV does not let me go to 1080 though since it detects the resolution and does not offer higher res.

I have to admit that Linux install (Sam's image on the XBMC forums) is the best thing that happened to my ATV. I can now do a lot more like since it is based on Ubuntu. It also plays all my video's fine. I did try a couple of VC1 at 1080 and it did struggle though (might be a Dharma issue though).
