    Use RACQ gift cards (5%) = $949.05

  • +6

    And no stupid notch…

    • -8

Because breadth-wide black bezel is better?

      • +22

        Yes

        • +2

          Do tell - why?

        • @AlexF: Personal preference of design

        • @FabMan: So, if non-notch part of screen is black, then it'll become preferential?

        • +15

@AlexF: Every other screen that I interact with, from TV to PC monitor,
to laptop to car stereo has a nice, unblemished rectangle.

Notches on phones look ridiculous. If Apple hadn't done it, it would have never taken off on other phones.

        • -4

          @t3chshopper:

Every other screen that I interact with .. unblemished rectangle.

So, circular-faced digital watch will never touch your wrist?

        • +1

Notches on phones look ridiculous. If Apple hadn't done it, it would have never taken off on other phones.:

          Never a truer statement.

It’s sad that everyone just copies apple.

        • -2

@ethanshdd: Personally I'd rather have a notch rather than a bigger phone for the same size screen. And it seems silly to not use the middle of the notification bar as it rarely displays anything. IMO it was a good innovation.

It’s sad that everyone just copies apple.

But Assdroids insist that Apple copied everyone else. WTF is going on?

        • +3

@t3chshopper: but imagine if you had MORE screen to the top left and top right

          MORE than you currently have

Would that be a negative, having more screen to the top left and top right?

No, well ta dah —> notch

If u answered yes above to it being a negative then I guess you should enjoy your slightly smaller recangular screen or buy a larger screen

        • @Diji1: Why do you write like a moron? You don't have too.

        • +5

@Diji1: Essential Phone first to market with a notch, apple came a long and copied it

        • +3

@Fancy: Don't bother, keep in mind you were replying to someone who uses the word "Assdroids".

      • +1

Cannot believe you got so many negs for this comment. Why would people prefer less screen and no notch!?

  • +7

    Very happy with the phone

    • Same. It has it's quirks but much happier one year o t hen with my previous iPhones.
Battery still lasts 24 hours with moderate use and 4 hours of spotify

    • +10

You may be, but a lot of people are having problems; particularly display issues and app lag.

For $1000 for a sd835 chip with some issues that's about to be superseded, I really can't recommend it.

      • New flagships are $1500 these days btw .. so $1000 is a good saving.

    • -1

After being through a few rmas with this and the previous I wouldn't touch it over a op6.

  • +4

Yeah, will wait until Pixel 3 hits the market, preferably when the sales around the end of the year kick in. I am cheap. :)

    • +1

Not so cheap if looking at a smartphone over $500 lol.

      • +4

True dat. Plenty of good phones around for a lot less for the actually cheap.

      • +1

        Or $200 :D

        • Haha, so true in my case, $250 ( Nexus 4 ) was my limit up until last year when I stepped up and really stretched my budget to $300 mark for aMoto G5+ 32GB/4GB , and that took three months or so to convince myself lol.

Not regretting that purchase though, happy with that choice.

        • +1

@ozhunter68: Sharp Aquos S2 is my second favourite device after the OG Samsung Galaxy Note. ~$200!

    • Always look for you in every Pixel post :D! Never disappointed!

  • +43

It's not worth it, this phone should cost 600-700$ by now.
1000$ is way too much for a Pixel almost a year after launch

    • About this price second hand for mint condition on Gumtree /Facebook marketplace

      • second hand mobile phone? pass.

        • +1

What's wrong with them? Great savings.

        • What? O_o

          Why?

    • Agree a bit more you can get note 9

  • +2

pixel 3 and 3XL announced in two weeks. Wait until then and 2XL will be cheaper

    • +1

If the 3 & 3XL launch at stupidly high prices, which they will, then they’re not going to have the big impact on 2/2XL pricing that people are holding out for.

  • +3

Do they still sell the non-XL version of this? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I'd rather a smaller smartphone, anyone got any recommendations? Something I can text with just one hand.

    • Yea i with you.

    • I have the non XL. Funny thing is it was damn hard to find one when I got it in June, missed out on JB Wednesday Madness and then it's like gone forever. So I bought off Kogan and right after that Kogan also ran out/push price up by $120. Probably because HTC sold its division to Google so they stopped production early whereas LG was still making the XL. Or because f the XL early QC problem most major tech sites were recommending the non XL so people bought them up faster.

    • I'd recommend waiting for the Pixel 3 non-xl, because from the current info available, its likely to use a lot more of its size with screen, (the pixel 2 has massive bezels), and have a significantly larger battery.

    • +1

The reason why you can't find the standard Pixel 2, is because they stop production on them.

The standard Pixel 2 was manufactured by HTC, while the Pixel 2 XL is manufactured by LG.

  • -5

I prefer Essential Phone (PH-1), an equivalent phone at half price :D

    • +9

Not really an equivalent phone. The Pixel 2XL has a top 3 smartphone camera on the market whilst the Essential Phone leaves A LOT to be desired in that department. That combined with no OLED screen in the Essential Phone and the 2 year global warranty on the Pixel 2XL puts them in 2 completely different categories in my opinion. You get what you pay for.

      • +2

Yeah, I had both the Pixel 2 and the Essential PH1. The Pixel 2 is a better phone in terms of software stability (when I used it as a daily anyway), and MUCH MUCH better camera. The PH1's camera is just average.

Now, if only the Pixel 2 had the screen design and build of the Essential!

      • +1

It has the same amount of complaints and hardware faults too, so that's a plus…. Keep in mind the OLED on the p2xl is quite bad.

        • Its not a great OLED but it's still better than an LCD imo. The complaints about it are pretty overblown, I've had mine since November last year and it's honestly fine, I didnt even notice the blue shift after a day. Plus always on and dark modes with unlit pixels make it worth it for me.

        • @dogee: I came from Samsung and iPhone, the pixel 2 xl screen is far worse. I can't use it late at night to watch videos due to the horrible black smear that was present on OLED screens in 2015. The graininess is pretty terrible too on white screens. It doesn't even get as bright as most 2016 phones.
For $650 I would so go for it, $1k for this old thing right now is not worth it. Just a few hundred more you get the best phone out Note 9 that's better in every way.

  • +3

I choose not to support them if they don’t support sd slot and headphone jack

    • +1

That has always been the case, from Nexus through to Pixel, and will always be that way. If you want a Pixel like experience, your best bet is a high end Nokia phone (eg Nokia 8 Sirocco).

      • But hows the camera on Sirocco?

        • Great, have one and best phone I've. Monthly security updates also.

    • -2

Invest in a bluetooth headphone and you won't need to worry about a headphone jack :D

      • I do and I have the frustration of when it runs out of juice halfway during my trip. You also conveniently ignored the point on sd memory.

      • bluetooth headphones have crappy battery life and sound crackly sometimes.

  • +11

Seems expensive for a device soon to be obsolete in a month or so…I miss the days when Google actually sold good and cheap phones like the Nexus line.

    • +4

soon to be obsolete in a month

We must have different definition of obsolete because a 1 year old phone is not obsolete in my dictionary. I'm still rocking a Samsung s7 which must be ancient to you

      • -4

        verbUS
verb: obsolete; 3rd person present: obsoletes; past tense: obsoleted; past participle: obsoleted; gerund or present participle: obsoleting

        1.
cause (a product or idea) to become obsolete by replacing it with something new.
"we're trying to stimulate the business by obsoleting last year's designs"

        • +2

I reckon just about every single phone brand has their phone blowing up once in a while.

It's not the issue with Samsung, but lithium ion batteries. As soon as they get too warm or the battery gets punctured, lithium will react very vigorously and will catch on fire.

Though, Samsung has implemented the 8 point battery check after the Note 7 fiasco, and it seems like it has helped.

    • +3

Phones don't become obsolete when a new model comes out, they function the same.

  • Smart phone plays more important role in human's life, so deserves higher price. I would assume $3k phones come soon in 3 years.

    • +8

      Is that you Tim Cook?
      Why phones are expensive

      • Tim Cook says the new iPhones are so expensive because they replace most other gadgets you'd need” should be: “Tim Cook says the new iPhones are so expensive because customers are willing to pay

  • +1

Great Phone with a great camera and battery life.

    • -1

Play the pixel lottery and hope you don't get a dud.

  • I don't believe pixel 2xl prices will fall as drastically as some others think. With pixel 3xl expected to come in around $1,400, I don't think the price for 2xl would go below $700 given its going to be only 1 year old only. In my opinion, I think we will see them around the low $800 mark.

    • Agreed. I bought my partner the OG pixel XL 1 month after the 2XL launch.. with a bit of haggling I got it for $850. I believe the price had dropped to $900 though.

I still have the OG pixel and still really happy with it.. torn between getting the 2XL or waiting for the 3.

    • +1

They've sold like absolute shit. They have to drop in price.

      • -4

That's because people buy Samsung. Not Google's rubbish.

  • +3

    Available in the following colours:

    • Not a colour
    • Just not a colour
    • -1

Good on you for seeing the world that way.

      • +2

        Actually I'm throwing shade

      • The pun was that black is not a colour, it's a shade. Thus he's "throwing shade". Incase you didn't get it.

  • Im getting it for 950 tomorrow from JB - Hi Fi.
That's the best they can do "apparently"

    • +1

or you know, wait 1.5 months for Pixel 3.

  • Nah.
Im getting it with a gift card from the telstra plan + some discounted GC's, so it brings it to about 650 for the phone, and 29 a month for 12 months

    • Thought it was $39 a month for 12 months plan?

      • I called them up multiple times
Takes a lot of time and effort to do so.
The online team can't do it, but I got 2 x 10$ discounts, one from online and the other from sales

        • Nice! What's the rationale/reason when you ask for the discount?

        • +1

@jeeft: Long time customer + got 1 mobile + internet on it.
I got the 20 $ discount with the pixel 59 offer too which is why i called up again to make sure i could get the discount

      • I couldn't get them to $39, only $49p/m but that is still decent.
Valued customer discount + extra data

Also when confirming my identity over the phone they tried to get me to agree to a $10 phone charge and then tried to back out of their online offer.
        Bunch of weasels.
The first few bills i had to phone and complain as they over charged me, but i kept my chat logs and it was all sorted.

        • work started paying me a $50 a month for phone usage so I'm up $12 a year hahaha
  • Skip this if you like using your phone at night in low brightness, the black crush and smearing is terrible.

    • Would you mind elaborating on this?

      • The screen can't display black areas properly so all the dark surrounding pixels get crushed together. Things in dark areas will lose quality. For example you might not be able to see the design of black wheels on a car, it will just be a black circle

    • +2

I just bought a couple of them from the deal. Will let you know how it goes.

      • You mean couple of GOOGLE PIXEL 2 XL from Geardo ? Thanks

        • Yep

        • @infinity03: Thanks. I will await your feedback and then proceed.

          • @JP1: @infinityO3 Any Feedback ?

      • Look forward to reading your experience with Geardo mate.

      • How did you go with Geardo? Have you received the Pixel yet?

        • +1

I ended up cancelling my order. They were unable to deliver to black and white colour that I had ordered. I found them being unable to deliver it even after showing stock to be quite poor service. However, the refund process was very efficient with the money being transferred back within a day (though I almost feel as if they wanted me to cancel the order).

          • @infinity03: Thank you for the feedback. Guess it may have been too good to be true.

    • +2

Holy… That is cheap. I think you won't have issues if you go through PayPal for sites like that

    • +1

Real pity officeworks don't seem to sell this phone, or you could price match them to that site.
