FYI unlock codes seem to go for about $27-$30 on eBay.

Great kid phone for the price. Activate the Sim on 365 day plan, and disable mobile data, except when you go on holiday, and buy data packs from the prepaid credit.

Nokia 3, if they are still around, is probably better at the same price point.

      • +1

It's a tricky one Huawei has a better screen or at least bigger. Also less bezels if that matters. However Nokia has B28 for better 4G reception and also NFC for mobile payments.

      • +3

        Do you want security updates?

On one hand, you get a phone with guaranteed upgrade to Pie and monthly security updates.

On the other hand, you get a phone which probably would never ever see another update.

      • If NFC is important then you'd have to step up to the Huawei Y6 2018. Which is $149 (Optus) at Auspost or $159 elsewhere.

One other reason why you'd opt for this over the Nokia is it's got the more modern 18:9 aspect ratio.

        • Just to update the Optus Y6 2018 is not the variant with NFC, only the model number ATU-L11 has NFC. The Optus supplied model is ATU-22 with single SIM and no NFC.

        • @gratefulforsavings: Thanks. Didn't know that.

    • If anyone's interested, there seems plenty of Nokia 3 stock still in most Woolworths (in Brisbane at least).

  • Anyone know of this’ll run DJI GO 4 to use as a phone/tablet with drone?

    • +1

It should. Doesn't take much to run it except storage is a bit low with only 16gb. Make sure you write the cache to SD card.

      • I disagree. The decoding of the live video feed is quite intensive indeed. I used a tablet with a SD425 in it for a while and it was hell. I'd suggest B Wat invest in something with a bit more grunt (like the Lenovo P8), or better yet an iOS device as the iOS app is far better than the android one.

        Just my 2c.

        • Lol.. Which iOS device can you get for a hundred bucks? You'll be lucky to pick up a iPhone 4 for that much? The equivalent iOS device would be an SE at the cheapest for new and it's 3 times more than this phone. Not to mention the huge amount of videos you can store on 16gb of non expandable storage.

Btw. The decode video is only 720p that gets sent to the phone from the native recording restitution. It does work alright with lower end devices including mediatek stuff.

        • @bchliu: I said invest. I'm not saying they're comparable devices. If he wants a great experience with the DJI go app, I'd suggest spending the extra, as I believe it would be worth it (as it was for me).

Not sure what the storage space has to do with anything, as the cached video is useless.

Will this allow 7/11 fuel lock gps spoofing?

Decent cheap phone with up to date Oreo 8.1, 16GB/2GB and 5.45/18-9 ratio screen, but no B28 for us sim sluts after unlocking :-(

For that better of like someone commented above get a Nokia 3 if you can still find one.

20 of these or 1 iPhone XXX ?

    • 1 Decent Gaming Laptop + 1 This Phone = 1 Happy Life :D

You might even save some $ in the end can buy some beer with it instead of going for iPhone Xs Max

    • Have iphones come down in price?

    • +1

20 of these, 20 sim cards and a Batman utility belt to hold them all.

Run one small business from each phone. You'll be a millionaire in no time.

      • Or end up in a psych ward

  • Just wondering how to get $40 credit? Thanks.

    • +2

      $40 Vodafone sim card inside.

Will it work with Kogan network? Without unlocking

  • +2

If you clicked the link, it does say kogan included under ”overview".

  • Actually looks pretty decent.

  • Is it actually 40 bucks credit or a 40 buck starter kit?

Potentially gonna point a couple of elderlies at this sucker, but 40 bucks credit would make it a lot tastier than "here's a SIM, fire it up yourself and figure it out for another 40"

    • +1

It's the starter pack: "$40 Combo Plus Starter Pack"
      https://www.vodafone.com.au/prepaid/plans

      • Yeah, I checked the catalogue thinking it might give me a bit more info than the phone's listing itself and found that.

Still a pretty sweet deal tbh, but if it was just a straight 40 buck recharge with a standard starter pack I could just throw away, that'd be brilliant.

        • My guess is yes. Bought the Huawei wifi modem in the Big W modem hunt a month back. There was a $30 starter pack in the box but it gave less data credit than one you buy.

Would be surprised if they are locked to a network. I don't think Vodafone bothers or maybe Huawei doesn't play ball. There is a link somewhere on Vodafones website where you can check your device is locked or not. Mine wasn't and I recall it didn't even seem to refresh the page when I checked. Anyone else who managed to grab one of the 10 or so floating around Big W stores seemed to have the same experience on the Ozb post.

  • Will the network work under a TPG sim?

    • +2

Yes, it works with all networks using Vodafone towers.

      • +1

Thank you, answered the question I came to ask!

    • Under Product Features it states:

"Network locked: Yes (Vodafone, Lebara, Kogan Mobile, TPG Mobile)", so looks like a yes as far as working on this Vodafone Prepaid locked phone.

Should work 100% on all TPG 4G bands for now, but this phone is missing B28 for future TPG use.

see comment above. Be interested to know if these are locked

Any improvement on the GPS sensitivity to the Y5 2017? Difficult to use the 2017 model for navigation due to the erratic & lagging position (same behaviour on the 2 units I have).

    • Has anyone used this phone as a car's gps?

  • Is it dual sim phone?
