Thank you for the heads up!
Economy flight from MEL to SYD, on a particular date and time that I wanted.
Buying the Qantas economy ticket outright was $151.
Using points, cost was normally 8000 points + $35.83 in taxes.
Go the next screen now, and it showed a 25% discount on the points, so came to 6000 points + $35.83 in taxes.
Valuing points at 1.2 cents each, and adding a $0.40 booking fee for credit card, total cost was:
    = 6000 * 0.012 + 35.83 + 0.40
    = $108.23
Which was cheaper than the Qantas outright ticket, and also cheaper than the low cost carriers, yet includes snack and luggage, and was at a more preferable time, so it was the best option, so booked this - thanks!

Only downside is I would have bought 2 rewards tickets this way, yet only one seat was available. The availability of rewards point seats seems really bad (e.g. is it 2 economy reward seats per flight?). I quite doubt that this flight will be full - surely it's better to sell a seat using reward points than to not sell it at all?

You forgot that if you pay outright, you get 800 points back (approx $10) and 10 status credit (if it matters), which brings it down to $141

      If there's no 25% discount, 8000 * 0.012 + 35.83 + 0.40 = $132.23. I would more likely pay outright.

      • Good point, thank you, forgot to factor in the points earn on the normal outright ticket.

I sort of knew this before, but QANTAS are really disgusting when it comes to pricing and value. Sydney-London return comes down to excellent 90K points, but you also have to pay no less than $722.76 (AUD) !! Maybe some think that is great, but you can fly to Frankfurt or even London if you plan well ahead for less than $1K (AUD), no points involved. Garbage.

    • spot on mate!

    • Taxes in general have gone down for me and $722.76 is still a good price if you are booking a flight during the super peak times where the prices of flights are more expensive.

Below is a list of the taxes I paid for my recent flights to London as a reference.

      MEL-LHR-MEL taxes
      2011: $458.55 (August 2011 period)
      2012: $873.32 (August 2012)
      2013: $1,002.61 (September 2013)
      2015: $1,038.92 (August 2015)
      2017: $666.99 (August 2017)

      • I understand taxes cannot be avoided. Would be silly for Qantas to pay taxews for me on the basis of points (even if I think that was the case decades ago). However, the issue I have is the fuel surcharge which is a large proportion of the payment.

    • worst part, there is almost no rewards seats on business class

For those interested, ADE-LGW (London Gatwick) 22-24 July 2019 is 45,000 pts plus $297 fees & taxes.

    • I assume you mean ADL - in which case, pretty good looking deal!

      • yes ADL, sorry my bad… not bad deal if don't mind Gatwick!

  • SIN-LHR only 30K pts plus S$159 fees.

    • But need to position yourself to SIN first?

      • Of course you do, but there are cheap flights (when on sale) on budget airlines… actually I could spend a few days in Singapore if I have time!

        • Yea still a pretty good deal - but you can't ignore the potential hassle of the separate ticket. Need to consider buffer time considering they'll be 2 separate bookings

  • Damn, I misread this and wondered why PE wasn't coming up. Now I'm sad

  • Just tried to make a booking with points. No discount applied even though the deal has not expired.

  • yeh all week the discount has applied but now i go to book still a couple of hours before the promo ends and the discount is gone

  • ^ damn in a similar boat!! What's going on?!

  • You can book through the Qantas app with the discount still! Not as user friendly and may need to cross reference with desktop to check which flights are still available though. The Qantas live chat line was about 80 when I tried about half an hour ago :(

    • I managed to call through after 90 mins! And spent another 30 mins over the phone with the call centre lady to get the booking done……
