Not that great of a deal compared to last deals?

  • After reading you'll never get the torch for the prior price of 40ish, I bit the bullet.
Anyone recommend good batteries for it?

  • +3

This is a super bright torch. Can cause temporary blindness.

Has a non-trivial UI. Not a beginner torch. Really considered an enthusiast's gadget.

    • +1

      non-trivial UI

The UI is pretty intuitive. I would have thought it was the size/brightness that would make it an overkill for a "beginner". (Not sure what you have to do to be classified a "professional" flashlight user though.)

      • +2

The UI is programmable. That's the enthusiast part.

If you want to use it out of the box, as is, that's fine. But I found the out-of-the box settings awkward to use.

So then I had to learn how to program it…

        • Fair enough. How have you modified the UI?

        • +2

          @dust:

I changed it to have 5 evenly spaced modes. It is one of the built-in modes but to program the torch to use this mode took a fair bit of button-pressing and fiddling.

This REDDIT thread links to a Google DOC which I found to be easier to understand than the included instructions, but the document is still problematical:

          https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/7caafq/blf_q8_c…

In short, the torch can be set to be used in one of two Modes - Ramping Mode or Modes Mode.

In Ramping Mode: hold the button longer, the brightness increases.
In Modes Mode, each button press goes to the next level of brightness (ie the next mode). However, there are 12 pre-set Modes to choose from. e.g. Mode Setting 1 has 2 modes - 10 Lumens and 5000 Lumens. e.g. Mode setting 6 has 6 evenly spaced brightness levels. e.g. Mode Setting 12 has 4 evenly spaced brightness levels.

The Torch comes default in Ramping Mode. To set it to use a (one of the) Modes Mode instead, need to enter the programming Mode and select which of the 12 Modes you want to have. This Mode Setting is then permanent until the torch configuration is changed.

I really want one of these even though I have no use for it ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • +1

Irrelevant. I have four Q8's but only two hands :)

  • +1

Upvote for the person who finds the cheapest 18650 batteries ;)

    • I'll go first… https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2X-Samsung-30Q-18650-3000mAh-Lit… (Samsung 30Q * 4 = $33.76)

    • +2

Cheapest not always the best. Would recommend protected ones.

      • Is protected got to do with charging?

        • +1

Yep, with a non-smart charger it's possible for unprotected lithium batteries to explode.

        • @dust:

Ah, i've got the Nitecore D4 which is a smart charger, so should be fine?

        • Also to do with discharging. Lithium-ion batteries in general don't like to be over-discharged. Shortens cycle life.

        • +3

@joshuah: Yes. Because this flashlight has LVP and you're using a decent charger it will be fine. It's actually unprotected cells that are recommended for this flashlight, not protected ones. As long as you're charging them properly, you won't have a problem (just don't short them out). All the cells are in parallel in the Q8, so no issues with uneven discharge, etc.

        • @nullAndVoid: Sage advice for everyone by nullandvoid.

    • +1

Imalent protected are good value https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4-IMALENT-3000mAh-IMR-Protected-…
This ebay seller is legit too so no worries about fakes.

  • +1

Please tell me we have a warm white option.. brb

    EDIT: nope :(

    • It only has one tint option which is neutral white 5000k.

$7.00 each if buy 2 or more….but not protected.

    • +1

Do not buy those batteries for this torch. It will underperform as this torch needs high drain batteries like nullandvoid has suggested.

      You have been warned.

      • They are 10A cells apparently.
Maximum discharge current used in this torch is about 4A.

        • I'd argue It's not healthy for the battery to be running at full capacity constantly. They can overheat, causing potential damage.

        • @Skinnerr: They should be okay for this application but you will get better performance with higher drain cells.

        • I first used the Imalent protected that are rewrapped 30Q's limited to 15A in my 1st Q8 and noticed a nice improvement with normal 30Q/VCT6

  • This is apparently a searchlight?

    • It IS ridiculously bright. I can spotlight gumtrees in my neighbourhood like it's daytime.

  • I had no idea enthusiast torches were a thing. I definitely can't use regular NIMH batteries in this?

Also do you charge the 18650 batteries in a standard NIMH charger or do you require a special one?

    • +1

      No and yes

      • Thanks

      • Thanks, I have a Nitecore. Should that do the trick?

    • +1

Come on down to www.reddit.com/r/flashlight and say hi! The rabbit hole goes deep…

      • +1

        omfg…

        • My username is the same over there, so feel free to say hi. Unlike some parts of reddit, it's a very friendly place :)

          • @ebosh: Thanks dude. I don't know if I'm ready to take on a new hobby although I did order one so I might need to hit you up at some stage. I didn't know a torch could even have an interface.

            • @exacto: Yeah, the person who helped design the UI does a lot of this type of stuff. She has different UI's for a lot of lights that have programmable drivers. I've never gone as far as programming, but I'm about to get into building custom lights.

              • @ebosh: What would you recommend for batteries? I'm going to the USA so I'll be ordering from US Amazon. Are the Amazon branded ones OK? There are so many.

                • @exacto: I've got Samsung 30Q's and they are fine. Get button-tops. If you absolutely must order from Amazon just make sure you get it from a reputable seller as there are apparently a lot of fakes. If you don't have to order from Amazon then go to Illumination Supply. I think there is also a discount code from r/flashlight but haven't ordered anything from there in a while.

Bought one of these during the $40 deal, spent another $40 on batteries, and it has been unused ever since :/

    • Hi Dave, I would like to buy it from you if you want to sell it. Please let me know thanks.

      • Nah I'm good

        • Nah, just sell batteries, they won't last long unused.

        • @bargainparker: The 18650 in my compact torch (Sunwayman C20C) hasn't been put in a charger in over 12 months and it's at least 3 years old, it still works fine.

    • +10

every couple days i just go out the backyard at night and giggle to myself shooting it at things on turbo, best $40+$40 i ever spent. i heard some cats fighting once too and went out front blinded the bastards.

      • +1

That should be the no. 1 advertised use of this torch!

Also, were the cats fighting or procreating?

      • +2

That's what I'm saving mine for at the moment, except instead of cats it's my drunk neighbour who has loud domestics with his wife and bratty kids, and yells down his mobile at all hours.

    • I'll give you $30 for them! :)

  • -1

You don't need 30A batteries for this. 10 Amp Panasonic or Samsung unprotected batteries with more mAh would be better.
at 10A a 2500 mAh battery would last only 15 minutes.
I think reviews state it lasts about 40 minutes on full power.. That would equate to about 3A-4A maximum (maybe just 2A) draw.

    • +1

It takes 4 cells and drains about 12-15amps in total

It can't sustain turbo mode and will step down which gives you a longer run time.

  • Fantastic torch for camping. Although mine came with one bung led but they refunded me 20% or something so I wasnt fussed.

    • 20% refund for 25% less leds?

  • +3

This is cool but my wife prefers my neighbours Maglite.

  • 1500 hours seems like a long battery life on a searchlight.

    • +2

You won't be searching for much while it's set to the 2LM needed to achieve that time

  • checked around - this is the best charger to get?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/397946

  • Thx alot op, waited a long time for this deal. Don't forget 6% Cashrewards.

  • Beat me to it! Doesn't get any cheaper than this guys!

    • +1

If more stock is added please let us know!

  • cant find an excuse to get one

    • It's cheap

    • Then get two! It is a seriously good torch. 5000 lumen will light up your average backyard and at low settings will last for hours. Check out this pic I took a few weeks ago. The house at the end is 110m away https://imgur.com/ON39zDV
It is a thing of beauty https://imgur.com/gUl9wlt

  • missed out and not a happy prime member not have been notified of the deal

  • OP any chance for some more stock to be added?

  • :'D "Flat top is banned"

Is it just the shape, or is there a lack of under-volt protection?

    • Flat top doesn't make good contact, if any, with the positive contact ring. No contact, no light. It has low voltage protection. Should cut in around 2.8V.

  • The hell? I missed out again. Grrr.
Hey, Rep, any idea of when you can get more stock at this price, pretty-please?

    • Yeah me too … the old "I'll buy that when I get home from work failure"…

      Please release more stock !
