  • How can I use one of these to record TV to USB HDD?

    • Plex has this capability, however you will need a hdhomerun, and im unsure if DVR functionality is locked behind the plex pass paywall.

      • Yeah you need Plex Pass. I just bought it recently for the better music library and they had a sale for $99.

        • Which HDHomerun to get for this & where from? I've only seen the Quattro for sale here & it's too expensive & I don't need 4 tuners.

  • Serious question.

Have an Xbox one x and 4k TV.

Have installed ethernet and HDMI to connect my PC in another room to telly.

Would this be of any use?

Don't do any Netflix or streaming videos until I get NBN.

    • I don't think so, I am not an expert in these things though! I also do have latest 4k with all the cool stuff and Xbox OneX was thinking about buying this to sideload a few apps then again stopped myself.

    • +1

It's a better media player and more responsive than the Xbox, unless Plex (for example) has improved the apps on the Xbox…

Can also do Steamlink if that's useful?

I find it nicer than using a console for media duties, would also be notably less power hungry too.

      • If the Xbox would recognise alot more formats, I'd use the Xbox too, but so many times I was left to use a media player…

    • -6

This has to be one of the most elaborate ruses in a while surely

      • +3

        What are you on about?

        • -1

I took your post to be sarcastic, because it was very broad and unspecific, I dont think anyone can answer the question "is this useful to me" because you havent said if you are interested in Android gaming or anything else, we dont know what you do, just that you dont Netflix stream until NBN comes out, I was itching to answer your question but there isnt enough there for me to provide you with an answer. No offence meant, but i really thought you were taking the piss, and more so because you prefaced it with "serious question" (and it seems I am not alone, as xizor states below, and not least because who would pay in excess of 200 bucks to solve a problem that doesnt exist?

    • +3

The question is, what can't you do (or do properly) in your current setup that you would like to do?

      • Not much, only issue I have is that I had to use a boosted HDMI cable as it's 50ft,so it can be a bit buggy.

Plus for some games I get a black screen until I alt tab the game a couple of times.

        • +1

Well, it has a built in chromecast and 2.4G/5G wireless, and probably more flexibility to do various things. You could perhaps do way with the long HDMI cable. But if you're happy enough doing what you're doing how you're doing it then i'd say better to go blow $200 on something else.

I have a pretty similar setup to you. I bought the Nvidia Shield TV to use as a DVR with a HDHomerun (as the tv tuner) and then using that to stream the content in HD to Plex on my TV (and any other device with Plex). Works really well. Has series link so you can pick your show and let it go - even removes the ads.

      • +1

Which HDHomerun version do you have and where did you buy it from?

I want to set up the same as you have. Shield is on the way, have a Plex Pass, just need a HDHomerun/tuner.

I bought an Xbox One S to use as a Plex client but unfortunately it does not do DTS pass through, the server has to transcode the audio and was constantly buffering and freezing. I now also have the Shield and it does DTS pass through and it has not missed a beat.
The Netflix app on the Xbox does have Dolby Atmos support though, I believe that currently only the Xbox and LG Netflix apps have this.

    Want to buy this, but:
    - Don't have 4k tv
    - Don't have stable network, ADSL with 1-2Mbps, 3G/4G get around 12-15Mbps
    - Don't have video files to use with this Shield

The only thing I want to buy this because it can install Android TV app, which I can view international channels from my original country. The MI Box can work fine but as others said, it is not the same league when comparing the performance with the Shield.

    • Could you let me know the app name please?

    • I don't get it, MiBox is a Android TV operating system, so you can load any Android TV app on it. You can even side load any android app on it.

      • I've got both the shield tv and a mibox. The mibox has less processing power and less ram, ends up more of a freezing and stuttering mess compared to the shield.

        • I got my shield recently and have had a mibox for a year.

The difference is night and day.

The overwhelming difference for me is that the shield handles frame rate switching and so the judder in movies is gone! Smooth playback! Best.

  • Been trying to get dtshd and truehd to play on mine… Anyone have any idea how to,? When tried doing HDMI to auto and still…

    • It only does DTS pass through. You will need a receiver that can decode audio stream.
When I first played a video in Plex with DTS audio, it asked if I wanted to do pass through and I selected Yes. My receiver is doing the audio decoding.

  • Didn't work for me:
"This code can't be applied to your order."

    • You need to make an eBay US account homie

      • Tried to make a US account but can't add an Australian address :(

Edit: Don't worry. Created a US address as primary and then made AU shipping address.

  • I really only want one of these to play all my PC games on my 4KTV without having to drag my PC into my living room to do so. I would connect up via ethernet and I have and FTTP NBN, is there anything else I would need to stream flawlessly to my TV? Also are there any other catches with owning a shield and wanting to stream games?

    • +1

You should probably get a Steam Link for gaming?

I think the shield only streams certain games. Could be wrong on this.

    • +1

If you have a NVIDIA graphics card in your PC you can stream any game.
If not you can still install STEAM for android and use it to stream steam which then basically means you can stream any game.

I've found nvidia's gamestream better than steam but steam is constantly being updated.

Only issues I've really run into are when you have a keyboard/lapboard connected. The windows keys and some function keys do not pass through correctly and will do things like switch programs on android. Still haven't found a fix for it.
There is a way to connect usb directly to your PC via android which I need to try.

      • Thanks for the feedback guys good to know. I have an Nvidia card and I’ve heard mixed reviews on the Steamlink. Leaning more towards the shield. Cheers.

  • Do note this isn't the official controller that comes with the Nvidia Shield. Not saying it's a bad one (in fact, for the price I think it's a no-brainer, only ~$10 more than I paid recently for just the Shield sans-controller).

  • Can someone help me justify this?

    • I had a 4K smart Android TV and use Netflix Kodi through that
    • I also have an Apple TV which I like to use for YouTube, iTunes movies and Airplaying stuff
    • I also have a NAS which stores content, but not powerful enough to use Plex transcoding
    • I use an (ancient but still amazing) Boxee Box to play the content from the NAS (but I don't use it, I just buy/stream via the TV/ATV). Remote is awesome with a keyboard on the back of it
    • I also have PS4 which can play Spotify etc but I only use it for games

Seems like the NVidia unit will allow me to use Plex, which may be helpful to stream content to family and friends (if I had a good upload speed, which I don't), and a faster UI, 4K file based content and a more 'all in one' unit. Obviously I'm a nerd who enjoys tinkering with all this gear and that would give me some satisfaction, but a waste of time and money really.

    Any other benefits I'm missing?

    • It depends if you can play everything you want currently.
I started using the PS4 as my Plex client but it requires you to be online to view even content on your local server.
I got the Xbox One S but it does not do DTS pass through.
So I've ended up with the Shield which does everything I need it to, plus it acts as a chromecast as well.

Which "4K smart Android TV"? Is it an actual Android TV box, or a TV box that runs Android (if it's a cheap Chinese box, it's most likely the latter, and that's a big difference). And Netflix Kodi? I'm assuming you mean Netflix and Kodi separately (if you actually got Netflix running inside Kodi on an Android TV box, reliably…I bow down to your superior skills).

The Nvidia Shield has no problems running Kodi. It can also stream 4K Netflix, which the vast majority of cheap boxes cannot (some struggle just to run Netflix in HD). It's also powerful enough to not need transcoding for virtually anything I've thrown at it (I haven't tried 4K HEVC content yet, but it's supposed to support it no problem).

It's also supposed to be a good emulation box. I've only tried Sonic Adventures for Dreamcast on it, works pretty well (I have an SNES classic for SNES, NES, and some Sega Genesis games).

It's not 100% bug free, but for the most part it just works. About as user friendly as the Fire TV, but more powerful and less buggy (Fire TV kept having audio dropouts via hdmi, even with Dolby turned off; no such issue with the Shield).

The remote is pretty sparse, but if you have a Harmony remote, you can setup a second device as a Media PC; basically you can map keyboard presses to various buttons. Not only would you have a functional number pad now, but can do things like map "i" to the info button, "c" to menu (useful in Kodi to bring up the context menu, I "think" it's c), etc.

If you get the official controller (the newer 2017 one with always-on microphone) you can enable Google Assistant. I'm a cheap bastard and didn't shell out the extra $70, I only partially regret that.

  • To create a US account, do you just put a bogus US address in and get to delivered to your nominated Paypal address?

    • +2

You can add two addresses. one would be a Primary US address and the second one will be your delivery address.

  • Really new to this…

Does this play 4k HEVC Atmos content from a hdd or my PC with Plex?

I have a 4K TV and an Atmos capable receiver.

Tried using my Xbox One S, but having all kinds of grief with buffering or jerky playback (using ethernet, Plex etc).

    Thanks everyone.

    • I don't have an ATMOS receiver so cannot comment there, but it has played every 4K movie i've uhh acquired (several dozen) fine with Kodi and Plex (from both my NAS and PC) using ethernet.

    • I have this set up:
SHIELD (HDMI) -> Atmos enabled Soundbar (LG SK10Y) -> LG E7 and I get Atmos.

Also note, I play a file from NAS that is ATMOS enabled audio. I use Plex.

I am not even using Ethernet. I use wireless 2G
