Not everyone, if you signed prior and cancelled I don't think you can get the trial again.

  • +26

They must be struggling with signups lol

    • +43

I'm struggling to understand why you'd pay for it in the first place.

      • +2

It was worth it with the Google Home mini.

        • +2

I'm still waiting for the google home mini…

          • @NGPriest: I received mine to the address I selected when signing up to eBay plus.

      • +9

As a seller I'm pretty annoyed at it, because you have no way of knowing IF your item will ever be marked as qualifying, let alone when.

Right now there's no reason for sellers to support it, or offer free shipping and returns, as it's only to their disadvantage and eBay are offering nothing.

  • +38

    I'll wait for $10 a year…

    • +19

or a free year aka Shipster.

I originally signed up as the free shipping seemed good. But I'm noticing most eligible items I look at already have free shipping. The most recent time I would have used it, in the 10mins between adding the Ebay Plus item to my cart & going to the checkout, the Ebay plus disappeared and postage was added. Their priority support basically said bad luck, and when I asked who can I complain to because I thought that was a bit rough, they said you can't.

TLDR: I'm not sure what value most will get. At least with Prime, there's a large range of Prime free shipping products. And their customer service is always great (even without Prime). They just need to sort out their lightning deals.

      • +11

And prime has prime video a big advantage.

        • +9

Wished it had Amazon Music packaged with it…

        • +8

Not able to cast them using your mobile or chromecast is a big let down for media rooms unless you purchase their firesticks….

          • +3

@EnALup: Not sure who downvoted you, this bothers me a lot too.

            • @IDontWantToSignUpJustToComment: lol. Yea. No idea :).
I spent some time with amazon support and they were not helping. They advised me to contact Google support.
Anyway, I have prime and use it on my Sony TV. For projector, I use it via steam link. Only downside is that I have to keep my PC running.
Paying monthly is also a good thing I suppose with Amazon.

              • @EnALup: It's because Google and Amazon had some kind of falling out. You'll find that their devices will refuse to work with each other.

I've got a Sonos Beam and Alexa literally refuses to play Google Music - something along the lines of "I can't do that"…

                • @brotherfranciz: lol. Few big companies (Apple, Google and Microsoft) have come leaps in terms of sharing Tech/ Apps and letting these use cross platforms, though there is still work needs to be done by others like Amazon.

                • @brotherfranciz: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/122833

                  @brotherfranciz

It's all part of an ongoing 'turf war' between Google, Apple & Amazon in the US. Not only will you NOT find AppleTV and Google devices on Amazon sites but vice versa with both Apple and Google.

The same goes for their restrictions with their respective streaming services.

For Amazon Prime Video (better than Netflix imho), I use a Nvidia Shield (Android) TV as my main streaming device. This would be because while they are offering a device for streaming, they are not competing with their own streaming service. The same can be said with Roku devices. Amazon AU are slowly making stream access to Prime Video through Telstra TV (Roku OEM) and other devices in Australia.

If you are into streaming purchased digital videos and have Apple iTunes, Amazon Prime, Google Play Movies UltraViolet titles, these can be streamed across each others platforms if you sign up to MoviesAnywhere.com in the US (I use a US shipping address and VPN) to which you link each of your accounts and this makes your movie titles accessible in your various accounts (Movie titles only, not TV titles). I am not sure about Apple iTunes Australia, but when you purchase HD movie titles on the Apple iTunes US site, they will convert them to 4K title where and when available automaticially and I believe when you purchase titles elsewhere they will also stream those titles in 4K (where/when available).

                  Hope this helps :)

          • @EnALup: NVIDIA Shield TV has Prime Video app

            • @BargainMe: Glad I shared that here. I have not used Shield for gaming or anything else and knew it can open my chrome browser. I will install Prime Video App :)
              Thanks for the info.

            • @BargainMe: Not sure how it got changed from Steam link to Shield. I cast amazon videos via shield and not Shield…
Steam link does not have an app.. :(

      • -1

Returns are free and basically without question. I have benefitted several times there. Either the merchant pays return shipping or ebay covers it. Some items also have much higher shipping costs, you're just not looking in the right places…

        • +1

Thats hardly a benefit for free returns, maybe just dont buy it it you dont need it.

        • +12

You can already get it via Paypal.

      • +1

I imagine eBay have plans to add other products in the future, but might want to realise a certain number of members before taking the next step. It wouldn't surprise me if more features/services/benefits were announced around the time the first round of annual memberships are due to lapse.

I agree with you re: Amazon CS - I've only had to contact them a couple of times, but on both occasions they were excellent. In saying that, I've used eBay CS a lot (mostly via online chat), and with maybe one or two exceptions they've also been excellent.

The couple of times I've used eBay's priority support (again via online chat), they've addressed issues quickly and to my satisfaction, so no issues there for me.

        • +5

But this sort of "value adding" is from a bunch of blokes sitting around a table trying to figure out how they can get more money out of people. It's what big business does. They actually have full time emplyee/s looking at all sorts of possibilities. It is nearly always extra profit for very little outlay - the banks have perfected this of course, profit with no outlay in some circumstances.

          • -1

            @poohduck:

But this sort of "value adding" is from a bunch of blokes sitting around a table trying to figure out how they can get more money out of people. It's what big business does.

You say that as if it's somehow unusual for businesses to be tying to make money - it's what any business does.

It is nearly always extra profit for very little outlay…

So they're trying to gain more, for less outlay…exactly like everyone here on OzBargain. Again, how is this unusual or noteworthy?

At the end of the day, something either represents good value for an individual…or it doesn't. Value adding with only work if there's some benefit to be gained…if not, the product (or service) will flop.

            • +3

              @dm01:

At the end of the day, something either represents good value for an individual…or it doesn't

So you should have no issue where people pointed out it's not for everyone and can be a complete waste of $29 (or ended up causing / enticing people to waste even more money thinking they can save more on "free" postage by buying things they don't need).

I imagine eBay have plans to add other products in the future, but might want to realise a certain number of members before taking the next step

You are reading into eBay Plus too much / trying to over sugarcoat this by hyping it up even further. There is a simple explanation to all these promotions to eBay Plus: Some eBay managers' KPI might be dependent on the number of people actually join eBay Plus.

If you truly benefited from eBay Plus, I am happy for you. However, there is no reason for you to sell this to other people. Cost of living for me has gone up so much, I am glad that not having eBay Plus deters me from buying useless items or gadgets. Buying less from feeBay is one effective way of saving money.

              • -1

                @netsurfer:

So you should have no issue where people pointed out it's not for everyone and can be a complete waste of $29…

I have no issue with that at all, just like I hope others have no issue with me pointing out I find it to be of decent value. It's the idiots making exaggerated blanket statements that I take issue with (for the record, I don't consider poohduck's post to be one of those).

You are reading into eBay Plus too much / trying to over sugarcoat this by hyping it up even further.

Can you point out where I've "hyped" it up? I've simply stated I expect they have more services planned in the future. It seems eBay Plus is often compared to Amazon Prime - go take a look at Prime's history - they added services bit by bit over the years too.

There is a simple explanation to all these promotion to eBay Plus: Some eBay managers' KPI might be dependent on the number of people actually joined eBay Plus.

Again, that's nothing unusual - it would be very strange if in a corporation eBay's size there weren't KPIs in place for a project like eBay Plus. eBay would be trying to establish as large a membership base as possible, as quickly as possible - it provides more marketing opportunities both to members and to sellers, plus it's cash in the bank up front.

If you truly benefited from eBay Plus, I am happy for you. However, there is no reason for you to sell this to other people.

I'm not trying to sell to anyone. I assume most people on OzB are intelligent enough to make up their own minds as to whether it's a valuable program for them or not. Feel free to share your opinion; feel free to share your opinion on my opinion - it's a public forum, and I'm all for healthy debate.

I am glad that not having eBay Plus deter me from buying useless items or gadgets.

I try to limit my spending to useful items and gadgets.

                • @dm01:

I'm not trying to sell to anyone. I assume most people on OzB are intelligent enough to make up their own minds

Oh that is just gold, I bet you could buy some fancy rocks (utilizing your eBay Plus membership) to continue to throw them in glass house that you clearly live in.

                • @dm01:

I try to limit my spending to useful items and gadgets.

Try & gadgets (let's face it, majority of the time, we want gadgets which we don't actually need).

Can you point out where I've "hyped" it up?

As I already pointed out. You wrote: I imagine eBay have plans to add other products in the future, but might want to realise a certain number of members before taking the next step.

Your thinking is that feeBay will do more BUT they need more members first. Hence, there is incentive for you to promote it. But, don't you see a problem with eBay Plus now? They still need more members translates to not attractive enough for sufficient people to come on-board.

I'm not trying to sell to anyone. I assume most people on OzB are intelligent enough to make up their own minds

If that's the case, please BE HAPPY for people who decided not to join eBay Plus. Besides, given what eBay have been doing on these, there will be other promotions to entice people to join eBay Plus later.

                  • @netsurfer:

As I already pointed out. You wrote: I imagine eBay have plans to add other products in the future, but might want to realise a certain number of members before taking the next step.

If I'd written "eBay Plus is awesome, and in the future it's gonna get even better - jump on board peeps!", that might constitute "hype" (as I understand the definition of the word), but to simply say " I imagine eBay have plans to add other products in the future" - is that really hyping up the membership?

Your thinking is that feeBay will do more BUT they need more members first. Hence, there is incentive for you to promote it.

There's no incentive to me - I've already paid my money and signed up, it's value-for-money to me as is.

They still need more members translates to not attractive enough for sufficient people to come on-board.

Maybe they "need" more members" maybe they don't - that's just speculation - but it's not like any company ever decides it has enough customers or revenue - again, that's just normal business to be trying to grow.

If that's the case, please BE HAPPY for people who decided not to join eBay Plus

I am! And be happy for those of who are getting value-for-money from our eP memberships!

                    • +1

@dm01: You were responding to a comment from someone not sure what value most will get from eBay Plus. Your response:

So Google home mini = 20 bucks?

    • Can you still get the mini? Can't see the detail for it anywhere…

      • +1

        No, that deal has expired.

        • Bummer. Almost had me if it was still current.

  • +17

The problem with eBay Plus is that because eBay rewards sellers who offer free shipping with better search results for their ads.

So a lot of sellers have free shipping, which makes Plus far less attractive.

    • I agree. I'm not sure what ebay's 'premium support' is like, so it's probably not worth $29. PayPal already covers free return shipping.

For those that are subscribing, I'm curious to understand where the value is?

      • +4

One advantage I can think of is the ebay ‘Plus members only deals’ that pop up every now and then.

      • +1

Support is very good from my experience. They take care of return shipping costs. Paypal will only apply it if the merchant agrees to the return and AFAIK sometimes change of mind is not applicable.

        • And keep in mind that in a couple of years PayPal is going to be replaced as eBay's preferred payment gateway so who knows what might change when that happens.

  • +13

I signed up for free trials with Ebay Plus and Amazon Prime a while back.

I'm still with Amazon but cancelled Ebay Plus.

I just don't see the value with Ebay Plus.

    • +1

True. Even Amazon prime is expensive, I have a feeling that they will have better deals. I am sick of sellers jacking prices and calling it a sale.
Non prime sales are good enough.

Looks like ebay is thinking to get a set number of bargain hunters and these sales will be targeted to Plus only. We are getting them for most of people and not all might be taking use of it.

      • +1

        @ gaggy

"True. Even Amazon prime is expensive, I have a feeling that they will have better deals. I am sick of sellers jacking prices and calling it a sale."

As Amazon AU's inventory is slowly builing up, the Amazon Marketplace 'price-jackers' are slowly being weeded out, particularly if they are only drop-shipping from suppler warehouses (the same sources that Amazon AU has access to and with bigger clout).

Not only have Amazon AU increased their virtual & physical inventory, but I have noticed a massive increase of product available through the Amazon Global store recently, mostly from Amazon US. I have made quite a few purchases and have found no discernible difference in prices after application of GST and using current USD/AUD FX selling rates, so no evidence of price-jacking by Amazon themselves. Admittedly there remain some Amazon Marketplace sellers expecting naïve Aussie consumers to hand over their hard-earned, but their subsistence on this business model for the medium to long-term cannot be assured. They will only benefit where there is a shortage of supply, both local and global, and then only short-term. Anecdotally I have noticed some sanity returning to global memory and storage prices not that the global demand by crypto-currency farms now appear to be cooling down.

        • I was talking about price jackers at Ebay not at amazon

  • +2

Well I signed up for the first promo $29 and it overlapped into the 2nd month promo with free Google home mini, so I got two birds with a stone throw…

  • +2

I signed up for eBay plus and they had a % off Plus sellers code come out but it still had a minimum spend attached like any non plus code. Wtf eBay? Why pay for a service then have minimum spends attached to the discounts that are already exclusive to paying customers. You already got my money. I wish I could just get a refund for it since it's the most useless service.

  • +2

Too Much, plenty of place on ebay offer free postage.

  • +4

Not sure what value having a plus membership had for members. The only Plus I see is for eBay's bottom line.

  • +1

Screw ebay - when it goes wrong they just count their money and laugh

  • +7

Paid 29 for a year a few months back but I won't renew next year.

    • Ensure you cancel from within Ebay and PayPal ( if you've used PayPal ), as cancelling in Ebay is not enough to cancel the PayPal agreement

  • +4

The ebay plus hoax was never meant to bring benefits to the customers. It’s only a way for ebay to keep things confused and to profit from the confusion. Greed, like everything else these days.

    • I've already benefitted; I don't feel confused; can't relate to your comment, sorry.

  • +4

Their so called premium support suck. They will hang up on you when making an complain and they can't fix it. Few have also said the same thing.

    • -1

I've only used it over web chat and they were quick to help out on the couple of occasions I needed them.

      • +2

I've used feeBay Web chat many times. Simple cases, they can help you. More complicated ones, they can be clueless. Some of them can give you false information, especially when it is related to PayPal. I lost money by trusting eBay support assuring I was covered by PayPal protection (where in fact, I wasn't).

        • More complicated ones, they can be clueless.

True, I've encountered a couple who didn't seem to know much at all. In that instance, I've just opened a new chat window with someone else.

But an eBay CS rep doesn't work for PayPal, so why would you rely on them to be up to date or accurate on another company's policies?

But an eBay CS rep doesn't work for PayPal, so why would you rely on them to be up to date or accurate on another company's policies?

Do you know exactly what happened? PayPal Support asked me to contact eBay Support. eBay Support asked me to contact PayPal Support. Then PayPal Support insisted that this is an matter I need to sort out with eBay Support. Both PayPal Support and eBay Support told me the wrong information (with the exception of one of the nastier PayPal Support staff which didn't seem to care - and it turned out that's how the system behaved at the end). It's one thing to be told the wrong thing. It's another to be bouncing around between the two support teams with neither want to take responsibility and actually help. Part of the problem is, eBay Support don't have sufficient power to solve complex issues.

Compared to Amazon Support, Amazon support staff can provide a solution when you contact them.

How do you know if it is the first time you experience something out of ordinary?

Isn't that the same in any area of life? The situation where you don't know what you don't know.

PayPal Support asked me to contact eBay Support. eBay Support asked me to contact PayPal Support.

You've reminded me that I have had that happen before - a couple of years ago. Exactly like you said - each insisted it was the other's problem to solve. I don't even remember what the issue was now, but it was frustrating at the time needing to go back and forth several times only to be told, no, we can't help you, it's the other's responsibility.

  • +10

Now that they charge GST on everything I barely use ebay anymore. Thanks Gerry!

    • +17

… but I use Harvey Norman even less because of the GST change. On the rare occasion that HN have a reasonable deal, I get it price matched at JB, TGG, DJs etc because I think Gerry's behavior was unethical.

      • +7

Yep harvey norman is the last place I'd buy from, in some cases even with GST I'm still way ahead than buying local overpriced stock from harvey norman. TGG/Bing Lee seem to be better if you can time the 15/20% off ebay deals.

        • +2

Surprised Gerry is not lobbying for a 50% GST(Gerry Subsidy Tax) on imports to help make HN remotely price competitive.

  • +4

Pretty much everything I buy is from OS. $29 is too much. I might bite at $10.

  • Anyone know if you can stack Cashrewards/flybuys eBay earn/Velocity estore Earn together? Essentially triple dip?

  • +2

Don't think I've paid off the $29 yet.

  • +4

i forgot to cancel my free trial and paid $29 the first introductory offer. i have not seen 1 dollar back from it, i buy 10+ items a month from ebay.

have used the premium customer support as they dont let you email as a member you have to call, but they did sorted out one issue but it was a clear cut case that paypal would have sorted regardless. (cant remember the fine details but had no issues with their call support is my point)

    • -1

I forgot to cancel.. Got charged after a month.. Complained ebay they refused refund.. Contacted PayPal with threat to remove my cards got refund..

    • stwok, you can also use web chat for CS - I find it more convenient, plus you get emailed a copy of the conversation after.

      • True. I have used their chat support and was able to sort issues in the past. Not sure if normal ebay users are still able to contact via chat.
Amazon support is one of the best even it is overseas.

        • Chat support is available to everyone, not just eP members.

I used Amazon support (again via chat) a couple of weeks ago for a return, and I agree they are very very good.

  • +1

I suppose it depends on where you shop. For me it has paid itself off already plus some. One example might be "Computer Alliance" ebay store. Usual shipping is $12 but free with Ebay Plus. Another advantage is extra say 5% off for plus members…and so on. Perhaps I am just lucky but has worked well for me.

    • Don't forget doubled flybuys points!

    • +1

Computer Alliance shipping is $15 for me and I have purchased from them twice so I have already saved.

People seem to think because they haven't saved 100s of dollars in the few months the service has been live it ain't worth it. Typical OzB whinging. It is about $2.40 a month so it isn't exactly breaking the bank. I wouldn't have signed up for $49. But $29 is not that much over a 12 month term.

      • sorry, my bad………..yes its usually $15 shipping from Computer Alliance. I paid the $49 for my EBay Plus with the Free Google Mini (which I don't actually need)……and still happy. I agree and a lot of whingers here. Best option is not subscribe if too expensive. I do however appreciate shipping on some sites is stupidly inflated for non subscribers (that not good and ebay trying to force peoples hands).

  • May give it a go, but I don't shop at ebay all that often and most things I bought/interested in are already including shipping or I go store pickup.

But considering I'm paying $69 for catch, which I have not shopped at for months, may swap to ebay plus instead.

  • +4

How does this get upvoted to the main feed? This is no more a deal than are bank fees or parking tickets. Seems like people just froth at the mouth for anything eBay.

    SCREW eBay and this offer

I took up the free Prime deal - then - was sent an email for the $40 voucher for $49 Prime.

Clicked.. it didn't work - this promo is not for you

Nope - wont be taking up Ebay Plus - it really doesn't offer much - I'll take up Amazon Prime (using the AMEX deal when my free subscription runs out mid Dec)

Tried again and hours later no further notification (so appears paid). Question. do we need need to diarise this and cancel in a day or a month or a year.. how's that work please :)?

Cool. Did exactly that on signup and 20 minutes after cancellation it was a 'card rejected' email but I'll try again. :) thanks

At $10 I would consider this. At $29 it's not worth it, and at $49 it's a rip off for people with more money than sense.
