I don't need a new monitor.. Tempting price though

  • -1

    Asking for Science:

We have 2 x 27" monitors used for gaming and general computer work (Main one is ASUS MX279H 27-Inch/Secondary ASUS ASVN279Q)

Will be running RX570 8gb OC

Is this any and/or a significant improvement?

The dual monitor means that Sainter Boy can XBox and PC (discord) at the same time.

    • +2

I don't think so. 32 for a desk monitor is huge, and if your PC can only run games at 1080 it's going to look pretty awful.
Mostly personal preference though. if you already have two 27"'s you're used to big monitors anyway.
Also depends if those monitors are IPS or not, as IPS panels do look nicer.

      • Thanks

I think the versatility of the twin monitors means that I will have to find another Christmas Present

      • -4

This. Games look awful at 1080p on a 24" monitor.

        • 32"?

        • +2

24" is perfect for 1080P, what are you on about?

          • @Jimmycfc: I think he wanted to say," Games will look awful at 1080p on a 32" monitor"

        • I play games on my 1080p 32" monitor and I don't see any degradation of quality.

  • +6

I've got one of these in a last eBay 20% off. Moving up from a FHD Dell Ultrasharp 24", this feels great.
The PPI is the approximately the same on a 2K 31.5" vs FHD 24", but you have much more room. I think this is better than having 2 smaller monitors.

Haven't tried it for gaming, but I do a lot of animations and there is no ghosting problem.

    Cons:

    • At first, I had a bit of a neck pain because the height of the monitor is not adjustable. It is fixed and you can only tilt it up and down ~ 10deg. VESA mount not included. I adjusted to it after a couple of days and all good now.

    • The monitor does have a bit of a delay whenever you plug the laptop in (sometimes 5s, sometimes longer than 10s).

    • Thanks

    • How high is the monitor off the desk please?

      • About 12 cm

        • Ta

    • is there delay on waking up from sleep ?

      • +1

        Yes there is a delay

        • roughly how many seconds ?

the VA panel version took 15s or so

          • +1

            @dcep: As I mentioned above, about 5 - 10s. I have the IPS version (the D version).

    • You can put an old printer under it or used oil tin to elevate the height.

      • Haha wat?! Used oil tin? 🤣

        • or old accounting books…

  • +2

These have been as cheap as 252 in eBay plus deals. Make sure you get the IPS "d" version, mine had no ghosting issues at all. And yes agree on the delay on the monitor waking up

    • Yes, the monitor is currently $299 at many retailers plus shipping.(not sure if few offer free shipping)
It's like 10% duscount compared to 20% as stated by eBay.
Nice specs for budget gaming monitor though. Make sure graphic card can support high res.

  • +1

Funny, I got delivery of my OzBargain Medion PC yesterday and my current AOC monitor has some screen burn in it. Damn you OzBargains!!!!! Keeping me poor.
*Rubs hands together in anticipation of monitor upgrade…

  • +8

Just bought one. Not sure why.

    • +5

      The standard ozbargainer mentality!

      • Exactly! Buy first, think later!

  • Just bought one even though I told myself to wait until the best price of sub $250.. my life. Anyone can recommend a cheap vesa mount/arm?

    • +3

      this has no vesa holes

    • +1

Per phunky - no Vesa mounting but you can buy universal Vesa adaptors. I found a dual monitor Vesa stand for about $60 on eBay recently and that was partly the reason for me to upgrade a monitor because one of my current ones is both old and doesn't have Vesa mounting either.

      • Thank you! would something like this be sufficient? But then can't seem to find any vesa desk mount that supports 32" zz

        • If I'm reading the monitor's description right, it has no vesa mounting holes so you'll need something like this:

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Non-Vesa-Monitor-Adapter-Mount-K…

          I bought this Vesa mount:

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/371968654797

But that's a dual one - I think the same store sells a single one for around $30.

(Also an aside: Does anyone have trouble finding items in their eBay Purchase History? This one doesn't show up in my Purchase History at all, I had to go through my emails to find it. Weird.)

          • @HighAndDry: Ahh thanks for your advice. looks pretty ugly haha. might have to settle for the provided stand.

            • @4tran: Yeah - same reason for me to upgrade my monitor without VESA mounting holes. That and I just wanted a new monitor haha. But if this had VESA mounting holes I would've been pretty annoyed I spent more money on a 30" ultrawide (with less screen real estate…).

Edit: You can look into something like this, but it kinda blows up the savings:

              https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HumanCentric-VESA-Monitor-Mount-…

              • @HighAndDry: Hmm so this would be on top of paying for vesa arm as well..

I did already make a stupid purchase on the previous Philips 43" only to realize its 30hz which meant 100% of games would be lag af.

                • +1

@4tran: Yeah, the price made me reconsider. But for me, I considered it because I needed a dual VESA mount (which saves more space vs two default monitor stands, and isn't as useful with 1 VESA mount vs 1 default stand), but I also bought the VESA mount on sale (so spending the same amount on an adaptor didn't make sense) and my monitor that didn't have the VESA mounting holes was also old enough and I'd been mulling upgrading even beforehand. So in the end I didn't go with the adapter (and instead just bought a new monitor….)

I guess for you - again, 1 VESA mount vs 1 default stand isn't a huge improvement unless you really need the VESA adjustment, (and can't just stick a phone book under the monitor to raise it (which I'm doing with one of my monitors now to line the two of them up side by side), but at the same time you did just splash out for a new monitor and a 32" one at that.

                  30hz

                  Ouch.

                  • @HighAndDry: I guess the main reason for me to consider a mount is that the desk looks neater aesthetically. If I am to get that adapter, do you reckon this would hold this 31.5"?

and yes, 30hz. it's even a struggle to click on the quit button when opening a game, as it takes forever to even load the menu haha.

                    • @4tran: Hm. Description says "up to 30 inches", and "up to 10kgs". This monitor here is 31.5" (so slightly over), and net weight 7.0kg but gross weight 10.2kgs. That last figure probably includes the stand (and packaging?)…

So personally I'd buy it in your position, but you are taking a risk because technically it's outside of spec.

            • +1

@4tran: VESA mount plate + liquid nails if you don't care about getting it off again.

              • @jorf: Not actually a bad idea - a VESA mount plate is honestly cheaper than a lot of the adaptors (so you can just keep the backplate on even if you want to change monitors), and will look cleaner too.

                • @HighAndDry: Ok, totally dumb question but how do you put on a mount plate on this monitor. Something like this is definitely cheaper.

                  Never heard of liquid nails.

                  • @4tran: So that's an adaptor plate that connects to the VESA stand, and the monitor. But the monitor needs to have some kind of VESA mounting holes to begin with for the plate to match up and be screwed into. This monitor has no VESA mounting holes.

So for your case, you want something like:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HumanCentric-VESA-Monitor-Mount-… (BUT contact the seller to make sure it's compatible with your exact model - it should be, but it's not listed).

And that screws into a normal VESA mount on one end, and the other end goes into the AOC monitor's stand connector (at the base of the monitor I think).

Liquid nails is the super-ghetto solution; it's just super heavy-duty, construction-grade superglue.

                    https://www.bunnings.com.au/selleys-320g-liquid-nails-constr…

It's not really a serious suggestion because, well, lots of reasons. But it's a possible option. Just not great.

                    • @HighAndDry: Now Im getting confused, if I am to go for the super ghetto option, cant I just use the liquid nail to glue the monitor straight onto the vesa arm? Why would I need a mount plate when I can't screw the plate onto the arm as the screw would ruin the monitor.

But thank you for your initial suggestion of the adapter, $90 altogether isn't too bad.

                      • @4tran: Hahahah yeah it's not a great idea to begin with. You only need the mounting plate if the VESA arm didn't come with one to begin with.

                      • @4tran: You can buy a flat VESA mouting plate - something like this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/370873867564

(Note that's not necessarily a recommendation, just something to illustrate what I mean, but I think that one would work ok - the reason for using the mounting plate is that then you can easily remove the monitor from the arm, but you could just glue whatever arm you buy directly to the monitor.)

Then you'd use liquid nails or maybe 3M VHB tape (which would be better from a removable point of view, but maybe not as strong) to attach the back side of it to the back of the monitor. Then attach the other bit to your VESA arm (which again might require some extra nuts and bolts as you'd be piggy-backing two VESA plates together).

It's just not a great solution because you will probably never get it off again cleanly, so you'll "ruin" the back of it. Also there's a small risk that it could come off and drop the monitor, but the monitor isn't that heavy and the adhesive is pretty strong. If you're ok with that, it's a cheap way to fix the problem.

The other option i've seen is to take the back off the monitor and put a steel plate on the inside of the back panel and another on the outside and then screw them together - then you've got a screw-in mount. But you'd have to assess whether there's enough room inside the case to do that, as well as being a bit more handy than the glue solution.

        • While yes….. counterpoint:

          1 new from $215.59

(and just for kicks, it doesn't fit any 30"+ models on its description….)

  • I have a gtx 1080 and an i7 4770k 4.4ghz . I've never had a screen above 24" but I know I need a bigger screen.. Would this be a bit excessive size wise? and would my computer be able to handle it?

    • +1

Should be fine, I game on 1440p with a GTX 1080 and most of the time they run great at very high/ultra settings, just not at the very high refresh rate. But this monitor is 75Hz so it's the comfort zone for a GTX 1080.

I would get a 27" 1440p though, as it would be sharper due to higher PPI thanks to smaller screen size. Viewsonic has 27" 1440p IPS for cheap I believe.

    • I have this monitor & a GTX1080, and it runs every game i have beautifully at 1440p. it should be more than powerful enough. as has been mentioned this size screen at 1440p is roughly the same ppi as 24" screen at 1080p. However imo it looks a lot sharper to me than my old 1080p monitor.

regarding the size,at first it seems huge, even too big. but i got used to it pretty quickly, and i must say that i think i would find it hard to go back to something smaller!

Another thing to be aware of, is that it will need some tweaking out of the box. if you look for reviews and settings online, its fairly easy done. however there are presets built into the monitor (FPS, RTS, and some others)so there will be some setup and experimenting necessary.

I think it is good value for the price, and if you dont like it, its not the end of the world at this price. sell it and go back to the smaller monitor!

      • Thanks for the feedback.
Wish someone with RX 580 or similar AMD card has used it with Free sync to confirm if it will run games fine at 1440p and 75 Hz.

  • somehow I am tempted for this deal,
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-32-FHD-LED-Curved-Monito…
    it is for $321 AUD.

    • 1440p > 1080p

    • +1

I wouldn't go up to 32" at FHD (1080p), that would actually let you see pixels.

    • I got one for $268 with the 10% off last month. It's good enough, it's MVA panel but the colour is decent enough. Just not comparable to good IPS panel and higher resolution. It's curved though.

      • I fell for curved part. But now I think, not good enough reason, to go for it.

        • +3

Mr Christopher Walken is that you?

  • looks great but no height tilt etc, need it so pass, bummer :(

  • +5

No VESA mount, a dealbreaker for me :(

  • Thanks I bought one. Was looking for a new one possibly an ultrawide but for the price this seems much better

  • How will this monitor work with a GTX 1060. Can I game at anything higher than 1080p with this monitor?

    • Will be fine. Just note that you won't be getting any Freesync with an Nvidia card (unless you want to try that one weird tip)

      • Any idea if it will play 1440p with 75 Hz with any latest AMD cards utilizing Free Sync?

    • Good luck playing medium settings if your hoping for 60+fps

    • I have this monitor and a 1060, it really depends on the game. Well opimised games and older games can run at 75hz with pretty high settings, and the others you just need to play around to see what works.

      Nothing is unplayable.

  • Is it different to this one?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/406896

    • This is the IPS version, that one is not.

  • Would this be suitable for primarily gaming on an Xbox One X? If not, what should I be looking for?

    • Yes i think so. I use mine for ps4 and its perfect.
Although i previously used a 10yr old 19" computer monitor - so this is a major major go

    • Not sure how One X handles 1440p. Do they have native 1440p support?

If not, it will either output at 4K downsampled to 1080p, and then upscaled to 1440p by your monitor, or it will output 1080p, then be upscaled to 1440p by your monitor. Neither solution is ideal. Here's the kicker: Some games actually run at a native 1440p (which would have been perfect for this screen), but then get checkerboard upscaled to 4K. So even though 1440p is your screen's native resolution, it has to go through 3X rescaling to get back to the same 1440p resolution (1440p->2160p->1080p->1440p). The final 1440p image won't look as good as the original pure 1440p. Fortunately, this is rarer on One X than it is on PS4 Pro.

I would recommend a 4K screen if you have a One X. You're not tapping into its full potential with only 1440p. And it's actually sub optimal. I would rather get a 1080p screen tbh.

That is unless developers allow their games to output at 1440p.

If not, what should I be looking for?

4K with Freesync. HDR would be a bonus. 75/120/144hz is superfluous because it can't output above 60hz.

      • Thanks for the detailed response! I’m currently using a 24” 1080p and find it a bit better than our 65” 4K in game mode because I can slightly notice the input lag with the latter.

I'll wait until the 4K monitors come down in price. Thanks again.

  • How close to the monitor should I sit if I place it on the desk? I'm deciding between 32' vs 24 - 27'

    • For a 1080p display: 1-2.5X diagonal length.

      For a 4K display: 1-1.5X diagonal length.

With QHD being somewhere in between, and closer to the 1080p end than 4K you would sit further than 4K viewing distance, but closer than 1080p viewing distance. So around 1-2X diagonal.

has anyone try using 3M VHB doublesided tapes to mount non-vesa monitors?

  • Just got an Ebay email saying this has been refunded as they couldn't get stock from their supplier.
