Which Sim Only Plan?

Hi all,

My mate's son is coming to Australia this month from the UK and will be traveling around for the next 12 months.

He will be taking his own phone here with him, so he will require a sim-only plan.

Can anyone recommend a month to month deal or even a 12-month contract that will allow him to phone home occasionally and also use the internet here?

Thanks all

    • Thanks for that. I'm just hoping their coverage is decent enough.

If you want Telstra coverage, get Aldi, from $15/m

    • Thanks for that Oscar. I'll have a look.

It might not have the right bands for OZ, ie missing band 28.

So need to look into that, the other things is where they will be staying. Cities, any telco will be fine.

Country, more Telstra/Optus, real far out country, telstra only.

    • I think he has an iPhone.

    Go kogan

  • Hi all, is there anything better than Belong or Amaysim for someone that doesn't use much data (1gb a month should be enough) but wants unlimited calls and text?

    Belong $10 a month
    Or
    Amaysim $10 every 28 days?

$99 "prepaid" 12 gig plan with unlimited calls + texts. Prepaid in quotes because it's essentially a 12 month contract. If you port out earlier, there are no early exit fees, but you forfeit everything that remains (i.e. you don't get a refund for how many months you have left to run or how much data you have left). They're also relying on people's lack of discipline so they're forced to buy top up packs ($15 for 3 gigs).

No delivery fees, but you'll have to go to your local Aldi to get them yourself. They seem to be popular amongst older people. The last time they went on sale at my local Aldi, there were 5+ middle aged to old people already queuing outside waiting for it to open, so I wouldn't expect them to remain in stock for long. It works out to be $8.25 per month. That makes it cheaper than most "unlimited calls" add-on packs for home phones and other mobile plans in the $10 range like the ones you listed.

      • Hi nobelharvards, many thanks for sharing! Will look into it !

If you mate's son is planning on travelling around Australia, then he will be better off with either straight Telstra or Boost Mobile. Both have good coverage in regional areas. Telco's like Aldi, Woolworths etc only have access to part of the Telstra network which is not an issue in larger towns and cities but in more rural areas there is no coverage. I have travelled extensively around Australia and have found Aldi, Woolworths or Coles mobile just don't cut it.
