Month by month would be amazing.

In our country we say "They gave you a donkey and you are looking at his teeth"

Its cheap AF but you want more

      • +9

don't look a gift horse in the mouth

        • +2

Haha, i never heard that in English before. Thank you for educating me….

          • @nikoris: I guess your country doesn't value donkey teeth highly.

      • Lol optus isnt giving anybody anything, so your saying isn't relevant.

Inside of 12 months it is highly likley that the cost of this plan will drop again or its data entitlement will increase, meaning the subscriber will be paying more for less unless they re-contract ad infinitum.

Student discount works on these too now. $31.50pm for 30GB. Good enough for this OzBargainer to bite!

    • how did u get the student discount mate?

    • do you know if you have to use the same/exact email address when you sign-up for the promo code to be working?

      • No, you don't. I've got a UQ and QUT email and have used both codes for two different plans on my account which uses a personal email.

    • What Optus told me last time (2016) when I tried to use the student discount is that it had to be a new separate account and couldn't just be a plan on an existing account. So if you're in an account with your family with say your parents as the owners of the account, then you have to leave that and start a new account and verify with your student number to do the student discount. Has anyone had the same or a different experience? Hoping they may have changed this and let it be easier.

    • I tried to get a student discount on my $30/15GB virgin deal and they wouldn't budge at all. Ugh.

  • When I click through it says No International Minutes?

    • +3

scroll right, you looking the other $35 plan, not on this particular $35.

      • Thank you!

  • Can't wait for my current plan to expire

    • +4

You can change plans during contract period as long as new plan costs more than old

      • +2

        there lies the problem

        • I changed last month and they are charging me an early termination fee. I've tried to get out of but they keep saying they only waive this fee if it's a sim only plan to phone and Sim.

          • @mooseca: I changed last month too from 35 plan to discounted 45 plan , was no fee,yet anyway.
I thought fine print was quite clear

  • Wonder if they'll have the crazy plans like XMAS of 2016 . $59 for the latest Samsung (think it came with the watch), iphone, or pixel with 10gb (eventually 15gb with telstra). (I don't use much data so a new phone +10gb works better).

    • Did they have any nice plans XMas 2017?

Is it a good time to wait December for nice deals? Im new here in Australia and currently looking for contracts for me and my wife, is it worth waiting until Xmas?

      • Yes mate. It good to wait, they had the S8 last xmas for 59 dollar per month if you want a phone.

      • I think it's worth the wait until end of January next year if nothing in December. Australia usually have good (sometimes better sales) in January.

I missed out last year because I was still on a plan and they wouldn't let me out of it unless I paid 1 year worth of fees…

Also in my opinion, Sim Only plans are probably the only thing Australia isn't ripping us off on. It's one of the most competitive market here. Virgin Mobile got too competitive and had to close…

        • +1

          Optus bought out Virgin

          • @ChickenAdobo: Ahhh I read somewhere that they were too competitive in the sense that the profit margin wasn't sustainable in the long run as a business. Didn't really read on the news.

            Thanks for that!

  • +1

Saw someone mention elsewhere that these do not include the free streaming on Netflix etc (like it used to at this tier $36/month)

    • If thats the case then im content paying $1 extra a month, not that I would use 30gb anyway unless I was binging netflix.

    • +1

      MOBILE TV STREAMING
      $5 per month

      • Im paying $36 for the same plan from the previous deal, they apply $5 credit every month so mobile tv streaming is free :)

        • How do you know they're applying the $5 credit for the streaming? I'm pin that plan but when upgrading my existing plan to that, it showed streaming was an additional $5 per month.

          • +1

@Trishool: Because I had to call them afterwards to follow up, it has reflected on my bill now too. Best to go on live chat when activating the streaming pack, get them to do it. If a credit is applied to your account usually you will get an sms about it.

  • +1

Wow, this is pretty great. Locked in with Telstra till December though. Any guesses on how long this deal will go for, currently it says 'till withdrawn'?

    • -5

You could sign up for a new number on this plan, then when your Telstra contract expires in December do not renew it, but have your number ported over to Optus on the new plan. Can someone from Optus confirm whether this is an option?

      • Hmm in that case im still paying for both, so I may as well pay out the rest of my Telstra contract, because I cant really use both sim cards.

    • probably at least until Sunday 4th November

  • +3

Damn I just signed up for the 30gb $36 a month

    • @Terencee: Read my other comment below in this thread if you only signed up in the last week or so ;)

  • +1

Works also for NSW DoE staff as they have @det.nsw.edu.au email addresses :D

    • You accidentally post on this thread instead of the galaxy watch one?

      • Student discount with edu.au email?

    • Do they verify with a student number ?

  • +1

I'm pleased that I didnt rush in yesterday at $36/mth!

  • +1

Was able to change my current optus plan over to this with student discount applied. Thanks! Now have double the data for only $1.5 more than I used to pay!

  • +4

For those of you who only just signed up the previous deal in the last week or so, you might find this helpful.

Well I'm pleased I did sign up for 3 seperate sim only 30Gb $36/month plans only a few days ago (back on the 26th Sep).
A quick call to Optus asking if they could change these 3 seperate $36/m plans to the $35/m plans & they said there would be a early cancellation fee if I did that, which would be crazy expensive, but they were happy to offer me & apply on the spot an extra 5% discount on my $36/m plans.

So now my plans are the $45/m but with a 25% discount instead of only 20% discount therefore I'm only paying $33.75/month on each of those 3 plans.
    Win win.

    • I just signed up on Monday (i know, silly me) but am having no luck talking to Optus on live chat, even though we've been customers for over 10 years, they keep saying either that I cannot change plans yet or that they aren't able to add any discounts to an active plan. Which by your experience should be possible. Fingers crossed I can get someone to do it for me.

    • I just had a chat with Optus support online after reading your comment. I was able to apply the student discount to the (20% off $65) $52 80gb plan that I got last week. So it came down to $46.80 which is lower than the new plan with student discount at $49.50. Thanks for the idea!

    • Sweet! I was on the $45 optus plan with 20% off so $36 plan and just called them up. They gave me a further 10% off with a student promo code and now its $31.50!

  • LOL price matching vodafone. I see.

    • Not exactly. I did a comparison last week and from memory the perks/inclusions were better with Optus.

      • +1

yeah optus is great with their others included such as optus sports….etc etc.

        • Absolutely. VF cannot compete with Optus if you factor in the added services that Optus provides.

  • Mention student discount and price in title/OP - makes it even sweeter… $31.50!!

    https://offer.optus.com.au/student-hub

  • $45 for 50gb, $55 for 80gb

  • +1

Does this deal qualify for bundle discounts if you already have an existing Optus service, such as internet?.

    • +1

They both need to be on the 12m contracts.

I asked sunday if I get the $10 discount combining the previous 12m deal with my month-to-month mobile data plan & they said no. The mobile data is my main internet connection so I want the option to change providers on that one so I didn't sign up.

  • Does this stack with the Virgin offer where optus is buying out your old contract ?

    • +1

Yes, it did for me at least.

      • What do you get from stacking them ? Double data ?

  • Can you share the data with an iPad?

    • @Skramit: Apart from hotspotting to your phone, unfortunately the only way to share the data with an iPad is to purchase a Mobile Broadband (data only) plan on the same Optus bill. This will pool all the data & allow you to share the total monthly data across your devices.

    • I think so. You can use the data pool feature and get an extra data only SIM card but you'll need a 4g hotspot device to put the SIM into. Unless you iPad is the 4g + wifi version.

  • Wish Telstra has a similar deal.

  • I've just transferred myself over from Virgin to this. I'm gutted about the loss of great customer service!
At least I managed to use the student code promo.

  • Best way to get Telstra to come up with a similar deal is to put pressure on their social media page. Let's OzBargain them!!!
    https://www.facebook.com/Telstra/posts_to_page/

  • +1

I asked vodafone for a price match and they offered me 50GB for $40 per month.

  • So is it free Optus sport included?
or just unmetered when streaming Optus Sport but you gotta pay for the package

    • Optus Sport membership is included.

  • Got a Cashrewards notification about this one too… don't forget them!!

    • i searched up Optus in cr but no hits :(

  • Potentially stupid question, but is it possible to port a number across to this for an existing Telstra customer?

  • +1

@hutchdisco: Yes, you can port your number across.

  • Social experiment.. let's ee if we can OzBargain Telstra.

    https://www.facebook.com/Telstra/posts/10156035167354315?com…

  • Any students willing to generate a code for me?

    PM me :-) xo

I do not condone bamboozling the system. You do so at your own risk.

FYI: Wouldn't risk using these accounts for anything personal, I wouldn't be surprised if they recover them… For getting a code like this they're safe and work fine though.

Fun tip: If you have an eBay gift card from previous deals they work well on USD purchases. For example, eBay estimate is amount your giftcard is charged (currently $2.76 + $0.27 GST, $3.03 total) - there's no conversion fees/etc. Google currently says it should be about ~$3.06. It's about on par with fee free cards, if not ever so slightly better.

  • Anyone have any idea how long this promo will last for? A week? Two weeks?

    • @Kenb0: I could be wrong, but I'd keep my eye on the 19th October as the finish date of the promo.

Vodafone previously had their promo end date one day after Optus's last promo end date, but since Vodafone have pushed out their promo end date (for the 3rd time in a month) yet again, to the 19th October, I firmly believe Optus will continue to have it available until Vodafone ceases theirs.

For those who are on this offer, can you confirm if you can add "Optus Number Share" it's basically for Apple Watch Cellular. Also how much as Optus website is not clear as I'm reading it's free for the first 12 months then $5 per month after.

    • I spoke to a Optus rep and they said it is compatible with number share, but it won’t get the 12 months free. The 12 months free is only for phone plans.

      • A post on Whirlpool says that they were able to get it for free with this plan.

        • That's promising, judging by the rest of my conversation with this particular rep, I wouldn't be surprised if he was wrong.

          • +1

@SilentShakka: I can confirm that Optus Number Share is free if you activate before end of the year on this plan as I just activated my S4 Nike Watch 10 minutes ago.

            • @imolared: Great news, I’m just about to sign up for it with my new Apple Watch. Very happy to save the $60.

  • Anyone tried to get student discount applied who joined previous offer for $36?

  • -1

"Pre-purchase an Optus Travel Pack for $10 per day on selected plans to get standard unlimited talk and SMS plus 100MB of data to use in Zone 1 countries."

:D 100MB HAHA. Optus can't be bothered even trying to compete with Vodafone, thanks to Voda's global network I guess. 100MB is like a handful of webpages lol.

  • now with bonus 10,000 Flybuys points (targeted)

  • +1

i talked to the optus agent online and scored 30GB for $22.50, 12 month contract!

    • how? so it went from $35/month down to 22.50?

      • +2

i was recontracting with optus, they offered me a $10 discount on the plan + i get 10% off as a student
(the plan is the only service i have with optus)

        • niiiice - thanks for the breakdown

        • wow - what a deal

        • how is this even possbible? You must be lucky, do you mind if i ask how excatly you aproached them initially or they just said they wanted to give you a $10 discount?

          • @Kista: i just told them my plan with them was about to end, and i was looking for a new plan. i linked them to the jb hifi deal and broke it down saying that it would be $28 ish p/m for 50gb, can you match the deal or do better? They said they have a $45 p/m for 50GB deal which they said they would give me a $10p/m discount on. I was considering this, but then i also saw the $35 for 30GB deal, and said can i get the same discount on that plan instead as I wouldn't be able to use up all the 50GB. They said yes, so then I went on further to ask if it stacks with the student 10% off which they said yes as well - so i proceeded to recontract with optus :)

maybe i was just lucky haha

            • +1

@kirbycario: Looks like there is extra bargaining that can be had. I ended up signing up at the Optus shop after my online order didn't progress and actually got 45gb instead of 30gb for the same price ($31.50).

              • @imolared: i found that i couldnt use up that much data - you may have been able to ask for the same discount on the 30gb plan instead with this reason, to bring it down to the $22.50 p/m!

            • @kirbycario: Whats the JB HIFI deal?
