[VIC] Apple 29W USB‑C Power Adapter $39.97 (Usually $69) @ Costco Ringwood (Membership Required)

640

Apple 29W USB-C power supply at reduced price. There is a newer 30W model available elsewhere so perhaps they’re clearing for the new stock. From past experience this should be available for this price at other Costcos too.

  • Does anyone know if this charges an iPhone X at the same rate as the newer 30W version? From what I’ve been able to find, it has a couple of extra charging voltages and rates for Power Delivery but I can’t find any information on which rates the newer iPhones use for fast charging.

    • +10

The iPhone X goes up to 18W (12V/1.5A) over USB-PD. This graph shows higher watt chargers being used with no difference in charging speed.

So the 29W and 30W charger will charge at the same rate.

To complement Clear's graph, here's a test comparison graph showing charging speed of iPhone X using 4 different chargers (from left to right):

      • 29W USB PD Charger (A1540)
      • iPad default 5V/2.4A 12W Charger
      • iPhone default 5V/1A 5W Charger
      • Mophie Wireless Charger

Also, the new 30W Apple USB PD Charger (A1882) has 4 output voltage levels: 5V3A|9V3A|15V2A|20V1.5A as opposed to 29W's 2 levels 5.2V2.4A|14.5V2.0A.

      • So the new one is actually compliant with PD as opposed to this.

    • Choice reporter that really the 12wat is fine. Anything else intangible benefits.

It's so insulting to customers who pay $1,500 to $2,300 for a phone that you don't get a fast charger in the box! Oh, and make sure you buy a cable as well for $30 to $55 on top

    • +5

Maybe some people want to be insulted….

      • +7

that's right. some people pay good money to their mistress to be insulted and degraded.

        • +8

I get that for free from my wife..

            @ddr0001: wish i had a wife

          • +3

@ddr0001: The cost of having a wife in the first place is arguably not free… Some people just get better deals than others

            • @aragornelessar: definitely need some wife deals on ozbargain with voucher codes and cashrewards

As a huge iPhone fan who upgrades every year, I completely agree with you. However, I believe we, as consumers, are part of the problem. If so many of us are willing to pay plenty more for accessories, adapters and chargers then why should they give them away for free. Doesn't make business sense.

I no longer buy any accessories, cases, chargers, cables etc from Apple (thank god for Anker!) and while hopeful others would too so they change their business practises, it's quite unlikely. Walk into any Apple store and you can see the amount of people paying full RRP on accessories that can be bought cheaper online.

It's like the microtransactions crap, so many of us hate what it's done to gaming and boycott it but unfortunately there's whales out there that trump our voices/wallets and hence they are catered for.

While Anker products are generally good, their USB-C/USB 3.1 gen2 products have failed NathanK (Benson's colleague)'s tests. Furthermore, if you looked at the actual circuit design, while Anker is above average, you can still see cost cutting in some areas (compared to originals such as Apple and Samsung).

If you don't intend to use Anker USB 3.1 gen2 cables to charge your Macbook Pros, then it is fine. To be fair, quite a lot of other manufacturers made the same mistake. Apple's USB-PD cable is just USB 2.0 (which has less requirements to pass tests).

It's best to check each product, instead of relying on the brand. Even Apple had to recall their USB-C to USB-C cables initially. Their sneaky cost cutting on the 1m fast charging cable (downgrade from USB 3 to USB 2) just shows Apple care about their bottom line a lot.

    • wtf!! it doesn't come with the phone? What about the precious dongle

      • double wtf.. when you buy the charger it doesn't come with the cord???? How people defend apple is beyond me

        • -1

          The third wtf is this:

The 1m lightning cable to USB-C has recently dropped in price BUT Apple removed the USB 3.0 data pin wirings on the newer / cheaper version. So, it might be okay for iPhones, but if you have iPad Pro's, you should avoid the new 1m version unless you don't care about USB 3.0 transfer speed.

No one is defending Apple by the way. Apple have always been like that. The 30-pin port and now the lightning port (rather than standard USB-C). Not licensing the USB-PD support chip to 3rd party means you have to buy Apple original cable for this. Luckily, the 10W/12W charging isn't too bad so unless you really want that extra charging speed, there is no need to buy this (which is bulkier).

Should be free for a $2300 iphone.

    • +4

Nothing is ever free. If it was included it would have been a $2400 phone.

      • +4

Somehow I'm ok with that 🤔

        • Yes because it carries bitten apple!

You can buy a non-Apple Type C PD charger for less than half the price, with near identical specs: https://www.banggood.com/BlitzWolf-BW-S10-30W-USB-Type-C-PD-…

Or one with an extra Type A port for a little extra: https://www.banggood.com/BlitzWolf-BW-S11-30W-Type-C-PDQC3_0…

    • Thanks for that

    • The top one is better than the below in terms of PD.

      • The point is not that you can pay less but you can pay MORE.

You can pay stupid prices for a brand that charges 1/2 way in 30 mins instead of 45. People who need that time because they are watching it charge, instead of doing something productive while the charge happens deserve to pay more.

  • Don't forget you also need to buy Apple's expensive USB-C cable too.

  • +1

I guess you don't become a trillion dollar company without gouging your loyal customers.

And yes, as others have said, don't forget to also buy the USB C to lightning cable.

    • Amazon seems to have done it

      • They gouge their workers

  • An ok deal for an Apple official charger. As others have mentioned you can use other branded chargers.
The lightning to usb C cable though, no third party options there. At least none when I was looking.

  • This adapter benefits iPad Pro (other than the 1st gen 9.7 inch one) charging a lot more than iPhone. Unless you must have the ability to charge from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes (instead of 45 minutes - which can be achieved with Apple's 12W 5V adapter), you won't benefit much from it (after 50%, the fast charging mode has to slow down gradually - otherwise the battery will fry). 0 to 100 - the difference is 15 minutes (this charger vs 12W charger).

Then, there is the cable, the 1m one, the older / USB 3 version is very difficult to find. The current version is USB 2.0 - it's fine if you hardly ever connect your iPad to your computer (or use the SD card adapter).

As for why these are being cleared, the main reason is its limited voltage support - it's fine if you use this only on Apple products, but if you use it on other non-Apple products for charging, it has a high chance not having the correct voltage support for fastest charging). Hard to fault it at this price though, especially if you have a Macbook.

Thanks to everyone that’s commented. I’ve got an iPad Pro and an iPhone X. I’ll grab one as it looks like it will charge these as fast as the 30W version will.
