Air Asia has an advert around at present on instagram/FB for a sale to India. On their site it's in USD, but when you convert to AUD it's from $252 one way.
Air Asia is an LCC, but easily my favourite as the food is actually surprisingly good, and cheap. They have a few ways of making your journey more comfortable too - you can book a 'guarantee' to be next to an empty seat, for example.

Air Asia in Melbourne is also planning to move to Avalon,the had 270 return advertised prices earlier, but couldn't find any dates.
Nice to hear any restrictions or conditions compared to others.. My house mates go to India all the time and return is usually 800 they say but they might be over exaggerating a bit maybe.. 4-500 range seems more reasonable.
