I'm so impressed with mine from last time that I'd consider getting another. Not that I need it.

I'd happily repurpose one of these as a PC for the kids, or even a shared 24/7 Plex server perhaps.

    • Would this be any good at transcoding for plex? I'm finding my old n54 server is seriously having issues serving up 4k vids (even just streaming off the network directly).

      • +1

I couldn't say, as I haven't used mine for that. I though that Plex has some kind of calculator available to help you figure out that kind of stuff (vague recollection - could be wrong).

The OP here though posted recently that they use the smaller version of the same PC as a Plex server.

I'm surprised that you're having issues though. I stream from my relatively ancient HP N36L fine. Not 4k, but I've streamed 25GB+ BD rips to Kodi with no issues.

If I did get one of these though, it would be to set it up to serve/transcode Plex media on my N36L.

Edit: here are the Plex guidelines:

If you want very basic minimum suggestions:

        • No transcoding: Intel “Atom” 1.2GHz (NAS devices based on ARM processors should also be capable of at least one stream with no transcoding)
        • Single 720p transcode: Intel Core i3 3.0 GHz
        • Single 1080p transcode: Intel Core i5 3.0GHz
        • Single 4K transcode: Intel Core i7 3.2GHz
        • Why would you want to do hi-def real-time transcode?
Perhaps for Apple devices with limited codec support?

The only time I've transcoded, is to send a low-bandwidth SD stream to mobile device.

        • Interesting. Maybe it's the plex app I'm using. Doesn't want to stream to my XBX via plex with lots of buffering. Maybe I'll try Kodi instead.

          Cheers for this!

      • The old rule for plex was every 1500 on passmark was a 1080p video. From what I found this cpu has a 7120.
In theory a 4K video should use a little over double that (just remember 4K isn't really 4x bigger then 1080p) coming in at around 3500-4000 on passmark.

  • This is a very good piece of hardware. Can even drive 2x30" monitors.

  • +2

Have you got any options with 16gb ram OP?

    • +4

There are two slots unused, so you can buy 2 cheap ddr3 133 rams to put in. It is super easy.

      • do you have to worry about the timings or anything, to make sure no issues between 2 planks which already in there and 2 additional ones?

        • +4

The ram you need is Crucial 8GB Part #: CT102464BD160B

        • +1

Generally RAM will just run at the speed of the slowest stick, so as long as you get the right type for the board, they should all work, you just might slow it down if you put in a slower stick.

  • Used these sorta systems at work for years. Though not allowed to open them… Is their an ability to add a second drive? Presumably not nvme, or just upgrade the existing?

    • These take SATA drives only.

      • So they've got atleast a spare slot for another?

        • These desktops can be configured to have two drives out of the factory, so yeah.

Potentially you can have to up three drives, if you unplug the DVD drive. However, its probably not going to be SATA3, might be just SATAII but I haven't bothered to check the service manual.

          • @scrimshaw: Thanks, food for thought given ssd pricing….

            • @scuderiarmani: It is not that easy, because it does not have a spare power cable for your extra drive. It provided 3 ports for SATA. One is used by the CDRom, the other is used by the main HD drive, and one spare.

              • +1

@Thbloke: you can easily buy the required power splitter on ebay. I then zipped tied an ssd under the main drive, keeping the DVD

  • i literally just bought this last night (11pm)

albeit I used my 5% coupon code

  • +1

can i chuck in one of those 1060 3gb small form factor gpu with the current psu? or would i need to upgrade that too?

    • +1

Doesn't fit in case. Small form factor cards are just shorter in length, not height. You need low profile card (best you can go is 1050ti really).
And even then with the 9020's I believe the x16 port is too close to the power supply to fit it in.

      • +7

        KYoohu,
I have one of these at home and also have one of these (https://www.gigabyte.com/au/Graphics-Card/GV-N105TOC-4GL#kf), fits and works perfectly.
Never had any power issues (or any other issues).
Fitted with 16gb of Ram and an SSD and so far has played everything I've thrown at it (even HD Solitaire).
        Seriously, it all works well.

        Here's a video explaining everything … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w45ZOcXXzs

        Cheers
        FatBoy.

        • how about dota 2? or any other modern games nowadays?

i was contemplating buying a mini atx case and then swap the entire internal stuff over with a suitable PSU and GPU.

          hmmmmm….

          • @KYoohu: Modern games with the 1050Ti 4GB should get you low-med settings at 1080p

            • +1

@blonky: Probably the most modern game I have played is Wolfenstein - The old blood and that works great. Sorry, a bit old school. Don't even know what Dota is, let alone Dota 2!!

        • Hey FatBoy!

I have 2 question would it possible to use a Thermaltake Riser Cable

This way you can run the card in the x16 slot ?

I get that the case would not close would the system detect the case is open and prevent startup as I remember when I was in tafe an old optiplex system did that.

          Thanks alot mate :)

          • +1

@Gravehaunted: @Gravehaunted, not sure about the riser cable. Get what it does but I don't think you will have anywhere to actually attach or secure the card. It will sort of just be hanging there (unless you attach it upside down!!). I'll open up the case tonight and see if it's OK to use the system sans cover. It's probably just a BIOS setting or something.

            • @FatBoy: Hey FatBoy,

Thanks alot for getting back to me and you legend thanks. I was actually thinking to just mount the card outside the case after making a DIY mount or something :) But hey attaching it upside down is a pretty mint thought maybe I can pull something dodgy and work around it. Just thought if I can make it past the limitation of size I can push for a decent short term card (1-2 years @ mid settings), will have to take into account power draw but thats a problem for later :').

              • @Gravehaunted: Gravehaunted, no problem, just wanted to confirm that you CAN indeed use the system with the case off. As I suspected, it's a BIOS setting that you can turn on or off. I think it was called Case Intrusion Alert or something like that.
Happy to help and good luck with your build.
                Cheers
                FatBoy.

    • Only low profile video card can be installed, but you need to check if the power supply has enough capacity.

    • You can fit in a 1050TI Low Profile without any problem. If you are playing "less demanding" games then a 750Ti low profile works fine as well

  • +2

I have got one. It is faster than the currently popular laptop(not the top end) and quiet. Dell quality seems reliable. The refurbishing work looks clean and professional, so recommend it.

  • could anyone who has it already confirm if its PSU is sufficient for 1050Ti please? Since there is no HDMI I assume having GPU is a must to be able to hook up to living room TV.

    • +1

can confirm i have a 1050TI in my optiplex 9020

    • +3

If it has display ports you can use a converter…

    • +1

PSU is sufficient enough to run the 1050ti.

Just keep in mind that it can only fit in the 4x 2.0 slot instead of 16x 3.0 slot

So you will lose 5-20% of performance depending on which game you play

    • No, you certainly dont need a gpu to hook it up to a tv. If it's like the 9010, it should have at least a DP.

You can just buy a DP to hdmi adapter and should be ok

  • Any recommendations for "Display-Port to HDMI" adapters that work with these?
(I believe some don't work too well)

    Cheerz :)

    • +1

Unless you are trying to push high bandwidth resolutions like 4k 60hz, any shitty one should do.

4k 30hz and below should be ok. Im using a $1-2 one from a zapal deal. It's being used for 1080p 60hz monitor

    • +1

This is the one I purchased a few months back. - $2.50 + GST

    • I got one of those cheapies for my HP, it wouldnt work. I needed an "active" one like this

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Active-Mini-DisplayPort-Display-…

But the commenters above are saying the cheapies work so maybe Dell is different, not sure.

    • +1

Better to get a cable that has what you need at each end,
      not cable plus adapter.

DP to hdmi is just mechanical.

      • The TV is 10m away on the end of a HDMI cable that's buried in the wall, so an adapter is the best option here ;)

  • Is the code working for others? I'm getting "We ran into a problem. Please try again later" when trying to apply it.

    • Worked for me a while ago, I used it in conjunction with the 10%-off gift cards I purchased the other week and grabbed one of these i7 16gig 9020's for effectively $271:
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/192040675335
      (sold out now)

  • Very nice, will use as a Blue Iris server as it is currently killing my NUC with Plex on it. Looks like the power usage will be reasonable enough.

  • +1

got a 9020 i7 from these guys and pretty happy with the condition of the unit. being a desktop i guess its hard to beat them up.

that being said let it be noted to potential buyers, if you order it with a HDD only (not SSD + HDD) it doesnt come with a power cable to add a second drive, wasnt a problem with me as i just soldered an extra power cable into the loom, if your're not comfortable to do this or dont have spare power supplies laying around to butcher up you may get stuck.

  • From what I can determine the following is the case:

Dell Optiplex 9010 SFF chipset has support for 2x SATA 3.0 & 4x SATA 2.0
Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF chipset has support for 6x SATA 3.0

Now I don't know how many port and of what type are available on these boards.

Both systems support 4 RAM slots.

    • The 9020 only has 3 physical SATA ports

Hey guys, long time lurker here! Pre keen on getting one of these bad boys. How do these hold up doing just regular stuff? is the pc responsive? laggy? sluggish?how does it feel surfing the web (also, whats it like with multiple tabs open), and watching tv series/youtube videos?

Ill appreciate any answer my friends!!!

    • The Dell Optiplex with the current configuration, should be more then sufficient for surfing the web and watching YouTube/TV Series.

    • I am writing from one purchased from last sell! It is a great PC for everyday use and not sluggish at all. I am also very happy with this seller as they delivered on time and answered my question very clearly.

  • Thinking of getting one of these for kids - would it play fortnite on low settings without adding a GPU?

    • I am interested to know this as well.

Otherwise, it looks like a GTX 1050 lowprofile card is an extra $200 on Staticice.

  • Hi All

Can someone confirm the physical size of case SSF( is it dvd book size) and if an extra hdd can be added without soldering?

  • Windows 10 Pro or Home installed?

    • Mine had Pro. Could be luck of the draw though.

      • Luck of the draw is not good enough.

This is a pretty critical bit of information….

      • lucky, i got home and bought a new pro license.

    • +1

They can usually supply Pro. They will will come with the original Windows 7 Pro OEM sticker that can upgrade to Windows 10.

Just ask for Pro if you want it.

Have bought 4 of these in the past few months (2 for basic machines at work and 2 for home). Would recommend these guys and shipping is pretty quick in Brisbane at least.

  • Can any size hdd be added or does it have to be SSD if I add a hdd on ebay site how to do so and how much?

    • Any hard drive with a SATA interface can be installed - either 2.5" laptop or 3.5" desktop drive is faster and cheaper.
It doesn't have to be an SSD. Most people would just install a spare, not purchase a new one.
Not sure what eBay site has to do with adding a hdd. If you are asking how to buy on ebay then I am sure you can work it out.
If you need to ask about how to install a hdd into a PC, then i suggest you get a knowledgeable and experienced friend to do it for you.

  • Slight price difference aside, how would this laptop stack up against this PC if I was to upgrade ram in the PC to 16gb (+$110)?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-Elitebook-840-G1-Intel-i7-460…

    • I am looking at this too. Similar spec but not sure about built.

  • +3

Now I just need a usb wifi adapter to go with this…

    • So these dont have wifi adapters installed? I noticed you could add a USB one on the eBay page for another $25

      • +1

I bought one before realising it doesnt come with one (I think) and before realising I could add one for $25. But it looks like I can get one from umart or msy for about $11 bucks.

  • Hi, new to this. Whats the discount code? How do i apply it? Cheers

  • Any chance of a mini-tower with i5 4th gen CPU?

    • +1

They have other configurations in their ebay shop. They just don't have enough quantity to feature on ozbargain.

      • Be cautious with this because they often recycle listings with different spec-ed machines, so between browsing and adding to cart double check the specs just in case things have changed…

        i.e. this listing:
        Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF i7-4770s QC 3.1Ghz 8GB Ram 128Gb SSD
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/192040675335

Earlier in the day when I purchased it was:
        Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF i7-4770 QC 3.4Ghz 16GB Ram 500GB HDD
        (HD 4600 graphics)

        Same price….

    • +2

Don't really come across much of the Mini Tower version TBH. I see more of the Precision or Z series if they are towers.

  • Anyone of you got the code working. Not working for me.

    • Still working. Make sure you spell Pumpkin instead of Pumkin…

      • Not working for me.

        • Wasn't working for me this morning, and upon checking with ebay, they said it was because my account was originally a US account and this is a AU promo. They were able to change something on my account which allowed me to then use the code.

  • +1

Stacked with the 10% off ebay digital gift cards from 21/9. So good. But forgot cashrewards. Doh!

    • I did the same bloody thing, grrrr, did myself out of $3 ;(

  • I need to run a server for IL2 COD Blitz. Don’t know much about how to do it but am running if one of theses would do it?

  • bought one, thank you .. do i need to add 2 x 4G RAM please? previous comments saying 1 x 8G crucial RAM should work.. could anyone let me know what is the best option please?
