Dog Breeder Has Changed Their Mind after Deposit Has Been Paid

Hi All,

I need some advice on what to do.

I have been in contact with a dog breeder and paid a deposit for a particular dog. The breeder changed their mind and decided that they wanted to keep the dog. They offered us another dog and we accepted to take this dog.

We were due to pick up this dog this week and have spent a considerable amount of money getting ready for this dog.

The breeder has now changed their mind and refuses to sell us the dog.

What can/should we do?

Please help!

Nice. Now that you have secured a dog, tell us the breed.

      • +2

I'll know whether the dog is "secured" tomorrow.

          What's the good word?

  • +5

Breeders are - almost universally - scum. Take your money and adopt.

  • I’ve heard of similar things before. Breeders are an odd breed of human.

I have dogs and some puppies that are currently 6 weeks old. I wouldn't be happy with my puppies going to someone who hasn't a) hasn't had this dog before and b) someone who is expecting a child.

For starters, the child comes first and then the puppy. Not the other way around. Secondly, the number of ads i see on gumtree for dogs where people have had children and no longer have time for the dog is appalling. You OP, have no idea what you're doing. A whole week of preparation? Wow. That sounds about as long as your interest in the puppy will last. Puppies are a hell of a lot of work and responsibility. One week doesn't cut it for me.

You could offer me 10k and I'd say no, not a good home.
As for asking for a discount? The homes I choose are not about money. You could offer me 10k and I'd say no, not a good home - oh, have i already said that? I just have a bad feeling about your ability to offer a puppy a stable home.

    • What breed of dogs do you have?

      • Maltese

        • Nice :)

    • To be clear, they never once said that they refused to sell to us because they thought we were unable to provide a good home to that puppy.

      • +3

I wouldn't say that either. It's like saying you're not employable because you're young and could get pregnant.

    • +2

Wait what? You wouldn't be happy with your dogs going to a first time owner? How do you expect someone to get experience as a dog owner if you don't think it's responsible to sell a dog to someone who has never owned a dog before. Or is it only your dogs that are special?

And humans should ALWAYS come first regardless of age or relationship! I love my dogs but if I had to choose between one of my kids and all of my dogs, the child would be my choice. Without hesitation. Every time. Same goes for any other human child or adult.

Now I better understand your comments towards me elsewhere on the thread.

      • -5

If you had read more of the OP's comments, you would have seen that they want to get a dog before the child.

You wouldn't be happy with your dogs going to a first time owner?

this is the only thing you read right. No i wouldn't. They are way too much work for a first time owner, unless they can afford a monthly groomer. So a first time owner that's expecting a child in the near future? Not a chance. They are the most dumped animals. They live to 15+ and that's a long and expensive commitment … and children are a longer and more expensive commitment and the dog will be the first to go.

        • So is that due to the breed (as monthly groomer implies)? Or are you saying no one should be a first time dog owner?

        • +1

          How ridiculous. Seriously.

          • +1

@Pratty: "They are too much work for a first time owner".

Hahahahhaahha surely this 'breeder' is a trolling us.

Anything could happen. I thought by paying a breeder a decent $2-$4k for a maltese puppy that would've extended enough goodwill that a loving future mother and first time owner expecting to bring up children in the very near future would still be able to provide a good home for a pup that will play it's own important role and lead its own responsibilities as part of the growing family unit.

Then again, breeders are absolutely entitled to charge and believe what they think and if I came across one like that who didn't want to sell me their dog I'd happily move on to the next too and everyone would be happy.

Dogs and kids growing up together. How unheard of!

            • @H E B: Ha! Absolutely agree with you.

The sad thing is I don’t think it’s a troll. As you mentioned, they can do as they wish. But seriously, they speak as if they’re some charity dealing out orphans to new homes. If it’s so difficult to find a responsible owner, why are you charging people exorbitant amounts for the puppies? Should you not be just giving them away out of the goodness of your heart?

They (breeders) often sound way too attached to the puppies and don’t want to let them go. Hence making people jump through ridiculous hoops to get one.

              • @Pratty: Pratty

why are you charging people exorbitant amounts for the puppies?

who said i was? Not me. I'm no breeder and they'll go for cost. I'd love to breed though, i really enjoy it … but it wouldn't matter how much money I could make, to me it is morally wrong to sell a dog to someone who is expecting a baby and planned 'for a whole week' to get a dog.

I had to wait on two lists for 2 years total, to get the two I have.

hey speak as if they’re some charity dealing out orphans to new homes

                this belongs entirely to rescues

            • @H E B: Heb

Have a look at Gumtree and how many dogs need new homes for lack of time … and these dogs don't have high maintenance needs. Maltese do. They used to be the most dumped dog according to Burke's BY. So cute as puppies but they need so much work and if you don't have time then you have to pay for it. It's not something you can skip.

I'm not a breeder and I'll be selling my puppies for cost to people I KNOW, and will keep them until they die of old age.

if I came across one like that who didn't want to sell me their dog I'd happily move on to the next too and everyone would be happy.

it's not as easy as you think.

      • +2

Same goes for any other human child or adult.

My dog comes before most humans.

        • -2

Thanks for letting us know of your mental disorder.

          • +4

@nahi11: No problems! If I consider my dog as being part of the family, and I'll protect her as such, that must make me a mental case.

Meanwhile, many humans cause significant damage to other humans, animals, environments, earth.. etc. Sure, I'm crazy.

    • +4

Yeah when I saw OP mention a few times 'I've prepared for a week' as if it is a big thing, I thought no wonder they don't want him to have the puppy.

      • +2

yeah lol and he wanted compensation for that whole "week of preparation" !

Name the breed, name the breed !!

I'm surprised a handful of people here still think dogs at shelters are inferior to those at Breeders when it comes to personality? I've fostered many "exclusive" breeds including shar pei, akita, french bulldogs, italian greyhounds, alaskan husky etc through RSPCA and AWL(they do get rare breed pups and adults). I've also fostered dozens of dogs seized from breeders and I can assure you those were some of the saddest conditions I've received dogs in.
I specifically foster working dogs and staffies now as they are the easiest to handle and the most appreciative of a good home. Most of these dogs have had an underprivilaged start to their life but are unbelievably understanding, appreciative of a loving home, have the desire to improve and eager to please. A bit of love goes a long way! Don't write off shelter animals based on misconceptions. Adopt a dog and save lives instead of buying and encouraging designer puppy farms. Cheers!

The bit I don’t get about pedigree dogs and people insisting they need a pure bred to get the specific personality traits is that it then sort of implies (to me) that a pedigree dog will lack individuality in its personality as it must be very very like it’s kin. It’s kind of like well if that one dies you can just go a buy another one of the rack.

I’ve known people who’ve had multiple of the same breed over time and I’m never sure if it’s the same dog as I met a couple years earlier or a new one.

I love the personality, individuality and uniqueness of our shelter mutt, the irony for me being that I’d now love to get another dog exactly the same if she died but can as I don’t have the “recipe”

      • I started with Maltese 30 years ago. Then i had a cross Maltese dog. He was a fantastic dog. I had 3 more crosses over time. Then someone gave me a Maltese 8 years ago and I remembered why the Maltese was superior. When the first 3 crosses died, I went back to pure bred Maltese.

The 3 crosses I had wouldn't go anywhere near each other. They couldn't touch on the lounge. Now i have 3 Maltese and 1 cross left. The cross hates the other dogs and always has. It's 17 now. It's part Pomeranian. It leads its own solitary life. If you look at the Pom characteristics, they are like this.

The Maltese all cuddle up together and walk on each other. They will all sit on my lap and lay on each other. There's no growling and bickering. I was so sick of all the growling and bickering that went on before. Now there's none, well except if one goes near the old Pom.

This is what you need to understand about dog breeds ok. They are very different to each breed and if you like something then that's what you like. There's a base personality there and a well bred dog will carry that.

The other thing is that they are also not the same in the slightest. They have completely different personality characteristics. They remain individuals that can't be replicated - only the base of getting on with each other remains and that they are laid back and easy going, not nasty. Barbra Streisand loved her dog so much, she had it cloned. She has said it's similar but not the same. You can't replicate everything that went into making a dog and so, each and every one will be completely different.

Nature vs Nurture. Have a read of "Three Identical Strangers"

I keep 3 or 4 dogs at a time and while it's sad when one dies, i look forward to getting another one. Like a box of chocolates, i never know what i'm going to love about the new one … and they are different and I end up loving them just the same for whatever they are.

        • Yeah I agree nurture plays a big role. FYI for those not into reading I think there's now a documentary released about the 3 identical strangers.

When I heard about dog cloning I didn't believe it would work as it should be almost impossible to create the same thing if life situations change when bringing up the second dog (as they tend to do with life in general). That and ethically speaking it may not be fair to either the original or replacement dog.

I can however see the appeal if you wanted maximum likelihood of just having a dog that looks the same and probably will mostly act the same with good overall health and genes. But for me, a dog, like humans it's their personalities and souls that sets us all apart. Recreating that is the trick and ultimately if easy to accomplish will devalue it too.

Statistically speaking I would've thought if the older dog trained the younger dog together with the owner, they would all share very similar personalities but with their own minor likes and dislike that differ slightly.

          • @H E B: When they clone a dog, they put the eggs in any old donor dog and then take the puppies away as soon as they are born.
The first guy to clone a dog now disagrees with it, so it's more of a novelty for rich people than anything else.

Dogs, like people, will be as they essentially are naturally as well. There's only so much you can do. That old dog I talk about above … it always did as it liked even when it knew it shouldn't be doing it. It just never cared.

I've had many small dogs and all personalities were completely different. At the moment i have a super affectionate boy who won't leave me alone and wants attention all the time. He won't even let me type until he feels sufficiently attended to. Then i have a girl that wants no attention at all except for the odd belly rub, but she sits with me all the time the same as him. Same breed, treated the same by me from puppies.

  • Have a look at Paws a Moment on facebook. I got my french bulldog from them and would highly recommend them, very cheap, easy to deal with, I told them what I wanted and they let me know when they had one available. You can skip all the extra work required for a puppy (it can be a lot of work). My frenchie is well behaved, quiet and just wants to sit next to her humans.

Hey missosoup - either tell us the breed of this puppy you are babbling about or flap off. You came here, presumably for assistance, yet have continually evaded the question. Either answer it or just go away.

    • +1

Exactly, like we are going to ring all the breeders to 'try and get in first'. BRB preparing my house for a puppy.

      • oh and don't forget you're also looking for some family members to look after the dog for a few days!

    • +1

Probably didn't want to give away that they just wanted a fashion accessory dog. The dogs are the pounds wouldn't go well with the designer dog bag.

Totally guessing but that's the vibe.

    • I bet it’s a Staffy.

  • So what type of dog was all the fuss over? I did my bit and read the thread, what type of dog is it

    • -1

      Sweet and sour.

  • Sending a letter of demand after getting your deposit back? Unreal. Your the type of person who agrees to purchasing something from Gumtree at an agreed price, then rocking up only to haggle and argue.

    • Did you read that they had made purchases based on getting the dog and the dealer fulfilling their promise to deliver on the contract. Only to have it taken away last minute (after they had purchased things)?

      • Fairly certain LUTSlit had been following from the first day and from first post perceived behavioral traits from OP explaining the 'dealer' to choosing to renege on their 'contract'.

  • +1

Why is OP withholding the breed?

    • +4

Because "everyone will want to have one" if he tells us!

      • I think misso is a bit troublesome, as the breeder found out ;)

Also I think Misso is a woman.

Once I get a dog (if I ever do)… lets just say, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

  • +4

    Update? on the breed?

  • +4

I reckon misso is a troll. No other explanation for not disclosing breed of the dog after all this BS.

    • +6

I've been following from day one and it's been fairly exciting to see the progress.

From what to do? - I want compensation or I'll name and shame - I don't want to get from the breeder anymore - I think adopting is great - I'll get the deposit back now - I actually just sent a letter of demand - Now I'm gonna get the dog anyway.

Epic trilogy. Epic story that leaves the reader hanging gripping to come to terms.
