Google Pixel 3 was announced today, to be released on November 1st.

    • +12

Indeed it was. For $650 more

      • Comes with a good screen.

        • And a better Soc

          • @Louis89: I don't mind a good Soc

            • +1

@Dr Cheapo: this new Pixel phone will also get the Google Duplex service, later in the year
              ( the 'auto-magic' human-sounding appointment booker )

    • +6

If you can bear the screen quality on the 2XL there seems to be little reason to upgrade to the 3XL:
      - NO Notch
      - Same usable screen area once you exclude the notched area.
      - Same physical size
      - Same physical hardware in the rear camera module with the same updated camera features
      - Smaller battery than the 2XL
      - Same RAM
      - Same OS version
      - Negligible performance improvement w/ SD 845 vs 835
      - No LED notification on 3XL

      Pros
      - Better quality OLED screen. It is supposedly rated by diaplaymate to be of the same tier as Note 9, XS/Max
      - Wide angle FFC with probably better portrait mode with 2 cameras
      - Wireless charging

Mint condition ones available for $600-700 on Gumtree/FB Marketplace. Would be what I would get if I didn't have a Note 9 which IMO craps all over the 3XLfrom both a hardware/software feature and value proposition wise. I was using the 2XL before this and would recommend it at this price still.

      • a few of your points are not correct.

        • Same physical hardware in the rear camera module with the same updated camera features :: P3 will get software features not available on P2 such as zoom.
        • Same usable screen area once you exclude the notched area. :: notch area shows notifications, so more real estate for apps.
        • Smaller battery than the 2XL :: much more efficient cpu.
        • No LED notification on 3XL :: it has AOD…..why the hell would you use it.

Also factor in the P2XL speakers are trash, the P3 are looking to be much better.

Having had 3 RMA's om P2XL, it's hard to recommend. The terrible screen is worthy of a 2015 device, you don't realise what you have been putting up with until you try a different phone.

        • +5

          I heartily disagree.

The pixel 3 camera software features have/will trickle down to the 2xl. There is already a leaked 3xl camera apk which has most of the features. Most of the features aren't even that good in practice. Eg topshot. https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/10/09/googles-pixel-3-ple…

The notch is an abomination and doubles the thickness of the notification bar. Cuts off content in landscape mode and the bar can be hidden in immersive mode on the 2XL. There is no point of having a notch when you have a massive chin.

Battery life I suspect will be similar when you take into consideration the smaller battery and slightly more efficient CPU.

LED notification lights are a feature. Removal of choice is always a bad thing. Such as mandating you to use their half baked gesture navigation and notch (no options to hide either).

The only reason to upgrade would be for a better quality screen. Not worth $500-600 though over the 2XL IMO.

Note I didn't neg you for your different opinion by the way ;)

          • @plasmapuff: Nightshot doesn't work on P2XL, just as an example. There's also talk that many of the call AI related features will be P3 only.

Notch can be hidden on landscape meanding same content area as P2Xl, but in portrait you get more real estate if you aren't hacking in immersive mode. Massive chin is the same size chin as the P2XL.

Battery life going from PXL to P2XL was almost double for me. P2Xl had a MUCH bigger, higher res screen and less than a 100mah jump in battery. Most of the battery savings of any phone comes down to CPU speed, not battery size.

LED removal - nothing compared to headphone jack removal which is in P2XL too. AOD literally replaces this but in a much better way/interface.

In my opinion I wouldn't pay money for the P2XL when the OP6 exists. At this price the P2XL is a rip off.

        • Pretty sure I read that the camera module itself has been upgraded.

          • @takezo: Slight revision to improve "dynamic range". Actual specs and size are the same.

      • @plasmapuff What are your thoughts on Pixel 2?

They actually use "a battery that lasts up to a day" as a selling point?! That instantly made me less interested! I want at LEAST a day (as in, it's ok if it would die overnight, as I'm home and charging…). Up to a day means LESS than a day - it may die before I can get home to charge it?

      How sad :(

  • +5

Remember when phones didn't have notches? pepperidge farm remembers.

  • Google slashed official price of 2 XL yesterday, but this isn't too bad. Besides, most new features are software and will most likely trickled down to 2 as well, hopefully most of the new camera features.

What you get on the 3 is better display (2 XL had terribad QC issues), wireless charging, SD845 and a wide angle selfie camera. They said newer camera sensors but then acknowledged very much same features. Of course all this for much higher price too, expect $1400 for the 128GB model.

    • +1

2 XL had terribad QC issues

Funny how these issues never popped up on mine or any of my friends phones (around 5 of us)
Maybe the issue wasn't as bad as originally thought?
Btw I don't view my phone on a 90° angle so it doesn't bother me even if I did.

Also upgrades in the camera now are fairly trivial - the 2XL's is so good it'll be hard to spot improvements.

Wireless charging and in-box USB C headphones are basically all that's changed besides the obvious stuff like processor and battery

      • +1

exactly. I dont have any issue with my 2XL till date.

      • -1

You must be awesome at statistics. With your sample size of 5. lol.

Not all software features are trickling down.

Screen is terrible in daylight and low brightness and in general.

        • +1

Screen is terrible in daylight and low brightness and in general.

You sound like you have a massive sample size to back this up - let's see it.

I know 5 isn't a lot but they were all bought at different places with different build dates and none of us have a problem.

Or maybe I do have a blue tint but I look at my phone front on like a normal person, not at 80°-90° lol

        • +1

Correct. You only note how horrible LG OLED panel is when you put it next to a great AMOLED panel like on Samsung Note 9.

My first Android phone (Google) HTC Nexus had Samsung AMOLED panel. It was light years ahead of anything else on the market. 10 years later, it still beats all other panels available. Even Apple have recognised this fact and put Samsung AMOLED panel into their flagship iPhone X, Xs, Xs Max.

Google phone is a flagship device and needs (badly) a flagship AMOLED panel.

      • If the zoom and night sight are as good as advertised and trickled down to Pixel 2, I don't see the point in upgrade myself (I'm using Pixel 2 non XL). The new display though is rated BEST of best, beating iPhone Xs and Note 9 by DisplayMate.

  • It is interesting that the main reason people seem to want this phone is to get a version of AndroidOS without all the bloatware.

    • If that was the case, you could get vanilla Android with a cheaper Nokia 8 Sirrocco (or any other Nokia phone). Pure Android would just be one of many/various reasons why people would want this phone, I doubt its the main reason.

      • The camera is often said to be the best of any smartphone as well. Cameras are big selling points for phones.

  • +1

Just wanted to say that my Pixel 2 XL's battery drains like crazy after upgrading to Pie 9. I regret so much now.

    • factory reset? I m on Pie and not problem with draining.

    • +1

Yeah I'm the same here, I just put it onto battery saver and don't have any issues anymore, still annoying though.

Might have to follow pyramid's advice and factory reset to see how it goes. Probably going to sell once I get in TRS range and get something else.

    • mine only drains the first 2 days of a firmware update. Then its fine

    • I've found the opposite - my battery life was just over a day (should last until 6am next day) to a day and a half (should last until 1pm next day) after the 9.0 update.

  • +2

I own a nexus 6P its started rebooting itself non stop.Almost died on me yesterday

From checking other stores 64GB is already cheapest $999 not sure if this will be any cheaper ??
    Xiaomi F1 or Pixel 2 XL ??

    • +1

Yep my 3-year old 6P was getting so slow and kept on shutting down at ~20% battery

      • Well Xiaomi F1 $500 Non armour edition ive asked Kogan they aren't sure when this will be in stock
        Pixel 2XL extra $300

Not sure what should i do
I dont seem to trust Xiaomi phones

        • +1

well xiaomi is cheaper and offers similar specs, it comes down to your gut to trust it. otherwise wait until xmas and maybe will see more price slash

      • +1

I got 6p and have exactly same issue die at 20% surely something more is wrong with the 6p the fact many of them do it. But it's also running very slow even after factory reset.

        Would you get a OnePlus?

        • +1

its another $69 for One Plus does have better chipset and RAM
However i personally really love the stereo speakers from the experience with 6P
I'm seconds away from buying Pixel 2XL

          • @chaz0: OnePlus 6 can be had for $691 from catch. I think the OnePlus 6 out perform pixel 2xl last extra year and is $160 cheaper then 2xl.

  • +2

I paid $680 for Samsung S6 when it first came out, paying $1200 for a pixel 3 will be insanity for me

    • well then you can forget about $2,200 for the iphone xs max

      • +1

2.2K for a iphone? Why does a phone cost more than a computer these days?

        • actually $2,369.well to compare tit for tat, it doesn't cost more than apple's macbooks and imacs with the imac pro retailing at $7,300.

Apple has always been a luxury and a loyalty brand.

          • +2

@4tran: Funny that something can be 'luxury' just because of price when the hardware is comparable to a <$1000 phone. Like putting a Mercedes badge on a Toyota and charging Mercedes price for it.

            • +1

              @dogboy: Hello, Mercedes A-Class…

(and, more egregiously, the Lexus CT200h…)

            • @dogboy: that's the thing, I would imagine a bulk of what you're paying in well known brands is for the brand itself.

An actual car example would be the price difference between the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ, essentially the same car but $$$ difference. Or the upcoming Toyota Supra and BMW Z4.

      • -2

You do get 5 years of updates, a physical store, and good support. If you kept if for 5 years it would be much better value than this.

        • -1

Total false economy when it costs 3 times that of a flagship android phone. you could upgrade your android phone 3 times in 5 years and still be ahead of the curve for the price of one iPhone XS (which will, by then, be battered, broken and have a ruined battery).

          • @xyron: You only save max $500. Not sure what you are on about. What great Android phone they compares with iPhone xs can I get 3 for$1600

        • The only thing I see the iPhone doing better at this point is the SoC. It's a step up from Qualcomm offerings. Is that worth paying extra for though? Who cares if an app open a fraction of a second faster.. Especially in a few generations of updates where Apple slow down there old phones so you'll want to update anyhow. See the issue nowadays is smartphones have got good enough for the typical users use. Newer phones are only seeing minor improvements. Usually we are seeing new gimmicks, add an extra camera lens for zoom or in LG case add a few for wide angle and zoom. These things add to the cost, but don't make a huge improvement. So what happens we have these $1000+ phones that aren't much better than the previous generation.

          • @Ronnnie: "Apple slow down there old phones so you'll want to update anyhow"

Not any more. My iPhone 6's performance increased noticeably when I updated to iOS12. It seems Apple realised they were going to lose consumers, the way they were going.

            • @Buckshot: Yes, Apple was scrutinised for purposely slowing down devices. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion because they focused heavily on improving the performance in one version over the previous one(after being caught out) that they'll continue to do the same moving forward. Your 6s is still slower now on iOS 12 than it was on the original firmware at release. This is the nature of OS development, bring in new features it's going to require more resources which comes at the expense of performance. What I have noticed on my Apple devices since iOS 12 is I'm seeing a lot more app reloads and websites reloads than before. My bet is iOS 13 is going to be more focused on bringing in new features (unlike iOS 12) to take advantage of the new powerful current hardware. Which will come at a cost to performance of older less capable devices.

@OnlinePred Significantly better than Android? That's just your subjective opinion. Objectively speaking there's cons and pros to each platform. It comes down to what features the user values. Some users might think it's worth paying the extra $1000 to have a better SoC, so most popular apps can load a fraction of a second quicker. While others might prefer saving money, having better camera or perhaps a feature like having a desktop experience and other features OEM's provide or do better than Apple with their hardware. The user may not want to pay extra for fast charging or perhaps they are willing to make that trade off. Each to their own.

          • +1

@Ronnnie: 6s got faster with latest update. As did 7/7s/8. Significantly better than current androids.

It's a great time to buy a great phone that will last a long time, due to the very reason you said, not much is happening in the phone market right now, and probably not much in the next few years.

    • I bet people paid much less for Samsung Galaxy S1 when that came out.

      • I paid $550 for the Samsung Galaxy S1 outright from Optus. I paid $400 for the Nexus 5 32GB outright, and $760 for the Nexus 6P 64GB Silver when it came out (its still going 3 years later). Unlikely I'd ever be willing to pay $1K+ for any phone.

  • +5

Even after all these years, I am still surprised people will walk around with an $800, up to $2,000 item in their pocket. An item that can be easily dropped, stolen, scratched, misplaced, lost, etc. It would be nice to be able to afford to lose something like that…

    • +2

dropped, scratched - put in a decent case, don't put alongside keys or coins
stolen, misplaced, lost - add it to contents insurance

      • +1

I agree except a good protective case means it is no longer a svelte-looking fashion item.

Contents insurance will have an excess that could easily be from $300 to $1,000. I suppose as long as people play the odds and take reasonable care then most people will get decent value/longevity from their phone.

It is still a lot of money to be carrying around. I suppose I am struck by seeing them being used every day by people - adults as well as tweens and teenagers - who don't act as if the items are worth 50% to 150% of after-tax full-time weekly average ordinary time wages.

        • My fav phone is the my current p2xl since I got it for free on Telstra plan (no change of cost from previous Sim only plan), so I don't care if it gets scratched etc. It's great haha. No case or screen protector, almost a year later still no scratches.

    • +3

      Better than $2500 SLR, $300 phone, $1000 tablet, $50 WIFI hotspot, $300 mp3 player, $50 bluetooth speaker.

      • This is satire right?

  • I'll be waiting to see what OnePlus bring out with 6t and what price. Under $950 I'd be happy.

    • Just have a look at the Oppo R17 Pro, add SD845 and you'll get the OP6t.
The OP6 is about now $650-700, I think the 6t will be around $850-900 when it first release.

      • Sorry but where are you seeing the OP6 at $650-700?

        • https://m.catch.com.au/product/oneplus-6-a6000-6gb-ram-64gb-rom-dual-sim-mirror-black-2038385/?gclid=CjwKCAjwo_HdBRBjEiwAiPPXpP9bEgGSsH2RAYyo9syruTV5Fziw5KIDiAMjPIz50m-OWZ9Ne09K4hoC7WIQAvD_BwE&iv_=iv_p_1_a_934060956_g_48114289913_c_222157488894_k__m__w_aud-296349592699%3Apla-325418297884_n_g_d_m_v__l__t__r_1o1_x_pla_y_11248162_f_online_o_2038385_z_AU_i_en_j_325418297884_s__e__h_9071379_ii__vi&offer_id=17383349

    • OP6T loses the headphone jack and i suspect will lose a lot of traction because of it.

Thank goodness the Koreans are persisting with the jack. I don't use it all the time on my G7 but boy am I glad it's there when I need it (the Quad DAC is an awesome bonus too).

      • LG can't pump out good phones any more unfortunately. They were once good. Quad DAC can't even bring them into the realm of flagships. You can buy cheap USB C DACs that do significantly better anyway.

        • Are you using one? I have a G7 and a Galaxy S9 (work phone) and always reach for the G7. I much prefer it in every measurable way.

          • @xyron: Our work g7 is LCD, it's battery life is quite bad compared to S8 and my s9+. It doesn't feel or look as good as Samsung's. UI layer looks terrible. Prefer zoom over wide angle. Camera quality is not as good as S8, no where near s9+. Price is terrible, I would never buy it myself. Has a notch. Boombox is pretty good. Stupid logos look tacky. The s9+ lasts me the whole day while the g7 needs a a top up. Also Samsung software trumps lg in everyway.

I would get an op6 over an LG anyway.

    • The NY launch is selling it at $569 USD so works out to be $800~

  • +4

If anyone missed out GearDo has the P2 XL 64GB for $650~ atm https://geardo.com.au/Google-Pixel-2-XL spotted it when looking for cheap GoPro stuff!

    • Thanks, though I'm not sure if I should go with that or the One Plus 5..

      • Wait for 6t to push 6 prices down. 6 is an amazing phone. Would get p2xl over op5.

    • Would the Australian Consumer Law apply for this website if there is a defect in like 15 months?

    • I recently bought two Pixel2XLs from GearDo and they failed to deliver on both. They just led me on for a week until pushing me to accept a refund. Would not trust them again with a purchase.

      • Eeek, let's hope mine arrive.

        • just talked a rep on their website, and he said, he has the pixel 2 xl in stock from HK and can dispatched in 1-3 Business Days.

Sounds legit, invoice is from Australian ABN.

  • Yes mate. Cannot wait to get one :)
