Not sinking any more money into one of these boxes until they fix the shit show that was the latest update of the previous generation of boxes. Barely works any more.

I agree, mine needs to be restarted/unplugged it every time I use it.

      • +3

go into developer settings and disable sleep thingy…
that did the trick for me.

    No Ethernet —-AGAIN!

Difference between this and MiBox 3?

Edit: Just read that it is not much different from its predecessor other than the changed remote layout (remote now offers Netflix and Google Assistant buttons) and comes with Android Oreo out of the box (note that the predecessor also has Oreo update available).

    • 4kHDR is new I thought?

  • Just a lazy $20usd mark up from the official price.. not seeing a bargain here.. https://9to5google.com/2018/10/09/xiaomi-mi-box-s-android-tv…

    • Yeah it’s more, but I guess they’re not running a charity. Postage costs, store profit, etc

eMMC 8GB ROM, thus it can provide enough room and freedom to install Apps without worrying about running out of space.

Ummmm No it doesn't!! 8GB is tiny

  • I've been looking for what this adds and the list is shockingly short:

    Android 8.1
    Netflix button
Google Assistant Button (is this any different to the current voice search when running 8.0?)
    Live Button (?)
    Audio Out (2.5mm)

Doesn't appear to address any of the problems with the current box. On YouTube they said it will be selling at Walmart in the US, so I think that's the only real change.

What it really means is an excuse for Xiaomi to abandon everyone with the MiBox 3 Int and focus on supporting this "new" version.

    • If the hardware's essentially the same then support (such as it is) should cover both versions.

      • Yes, they should. Let's see if they do.

        • I’m not confident myself, just pointing out it may get supported by default.

Walmart been selling Xiaomi Mi Boxes from day one.

      • So there is even less point to this new version….

    • any better alternatives besides Nvidia shield?

      • Nothing better than a Shield. Vodafone TV is the other option, it has it's advantages (Ethernet, power supply, remote, fta tuner, etc), but it's still waiting on Oreo and has many of the same issues.

        • -1

AppleTV with MrMC is very good, if refurb or sale item then good value too.

  • +3

Just pay the extra $80 and get an Nvidia shield or Xbox S when they are on sale.

    • How’s the size compare? Xbox seems a bit big…?

      • +1

And Kodi support on Xbox one is not great, learned this the hard way! Just not an elegant solution for media player.

It's crazy there are no other real solutions except this and a shield.

        Though firetv works well

        • I replaced the Mibox with the Nvidia Shield when the Mibox update essentially broke it - months ago - and the extra cost is well worth it. The Shield is fantastic. Buy it for around the $200 mark which comes up from time to time.

        • +1

VodafoneTV is decent or so i have read. I have a shield (wish i had 2).

  • the chinese streamers were great until trumptown started messing with licensing - now its a shield or a lot of hassle.

    • +1

      Yuuuggggeeeee problem, yuuuugggeee

  • I have the previous model and one real PITA is that you can't share the hdd connected to the Mi-Box with the rest of the Windows n\w…it can access shares on Windows boxes but not visa versa…I am lead to believe this is to do with the Android security model…would be nice to be able to map a drive to it from Windows (as I can do with a Pi running Kodi)
